UK fetts help me please!!!
Help, I'm a british based fett trying to do a ROTJ costume, I'm having great difficulty getting the helmet colours right, I order some tamiya paints which i put on my bucket only to find out they are completely the wrong colours :( (apart from the red for the visor bit). I almost bought some more spray paints until my wife stopped me because they were not even close to the right colour ( and she's not an expert) I think i've spent so much time looking that i've gone "Fett Blind" any help on the colour paints would be a great help , they don't have to be a perfect match, just near (as I'm way off at the moment) please note I'm in the uk so Testors is no good or krylon. please help as this is starting to get me down, which is not what the whole costuming thing is about :fettrotj
:cheers in advance
Re: UK fetts help me please!!!
I'm having the same problem here in sweden. But what i did.. for example for my gauntlets i bought two colors. One prime red and another dark purple kinda colour. First i put a layer of the prime red.. which is way to bright and red for the gauntlets. Then i took the purple spray and from a distance missted the gauntlets up untill they got the correct shade of red. Looks really cool. I belive the same can be done with your helmet.
If you can't get the exact colour get two paints which are darker and lighter than the colour you want. Then alternate the layers with different intensity untill you get the shade you want.
I'll see if i can't post some pics of the test peice i did for my gauntlets tomorrow..
Re: UK fetts help me please!!!
At the moment I'm doing customs and an early Jango (for my movie) so I can't really say on the colours yet but I will be doing regular Mando's for the film and they use the same colour scheme as Boba. I'm going to have a word with Bobamaker to find out what he recommends (he's in the UK) and would suggest you do the same.
Good luck.
Jo
Re: UK fetts help me please!!!
see i found this in the plastikote range of paints

GREEN APPLE

Is this close? I think it's a bit light ,but some weathering would work to make it closer. but as i said before I can't to see if it's a mile off or if close.

Re: UK fetts help me please!!!
I used some humbrol sprays and tamiya sprays for my armor and helmet as well as mixing. I think it was matt light olive that humbrol make for the armour. I ended up using this for my helmet aswell, which looks very good, although not as light as the ESB scheme.

I have had nothing but problems with Plasticote paints as has my main trooping buddy. He's just in the process of stripping a Tie pilot helmet due to the plasticote paint he applied not drying (after 8 days!!!) and he is relatively skilled with paints. I have written off a pair of gauntlets having used it also in the past.
Re: UK fetts help me please!!!
well i don't think i'll be using plastikote paints then. Cheers for the info
Re: UK fetts help me please!!!
has anyone ever tried using normal paints like gouache?
Re: UK fetts help me please!!!
I recommend that you use water based acrylics, you can get these from HobbyCraft for about £1.75 each. They have hundreds of colours, I bought quite a few variations and ended up mixing them to get the exact colour. If you were doing ESB then I could give you the names to use.
Good luck
Re: UK fetts help me please!!!
I live near a hobbycraft i'll have to have a look, any particular brand of acrylics?
Re: UK fetts help me please!!!
I've used Games Workshops acrylic paints on my armour and they work great, they have a lot of colours to chose from and can be easily mixed to get the perfect colour. Additionally they only take a couple of minutes to dry, and several colours can be purchased in spray paint form.
Re: UK fetts help me please!!!
If you dont mind paying a small fortune for them and the fact that in their little bottles they dry out faster than jango can draw a westar
Re: UK fetts help me please!!!
Ok a day late but here are the pics i promised. I used two different colours from Plasti-Kote paints. The colours were "Real Red" and "Wine Red" ( <-- Translated from swedish)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...lets/paint.jpg
Painted the gauntlets with the "real red first". As you can see. Way to bright. So on with the other colour.

Much better.. You can see that it is significantly (tough word to spell) darker.. but not quite there yet..
Now with some weathering on top..

The lower half is unweathered with the black acrylic wash. just so you can tell the difference in colour. The black wash really deepens the red colour alot!
the finished result: Pretty darn close if you ask me..

That green apple would get you close with some dark washing. If you are going to use the colors from that plasi-kote list I would go with the TANGERINE for the killstripes, INSIGNIA RED for the mandible/visor area, HARBOUR BLUE for the upper cheeks, and GARDEN GREEN for the back of the helmet. A good dark wash over the entire helmet should get you pretty close.

No problem, when I return from work tonight I'll publish the colour list I have for ESB helmets. These are from two makes of Acrylics (Anita's & Folk Art) these are inexpensive and are very easy to apply and dry superbly smooth. I've spent a long time searching for the correct colours and the right product.
I haven't got all the colours for the ROTJ bucket yet (I only paint the odd one of these and I'm currently still using my original mixes), but when I do finally need to get a new batch of colour I will publish these also.
later
