    Aug 3, 2016, 9:17 PM - ToEleven ESB bucket & paintup for johnnyhungus #1

Getting a new casting fired up for Mr. johnnyhungus.

This flavor paint job will be from the movie where Darth effing Vader had to hold Boba Fett back from putting a blaster bolt through Chewbacca's face...ESB. (Not the one where George Lucas was going through a divorce and blah blah blah...)

I got it trimmed and sanded, so that counts for something.

Thanks man. Much sanding and Bondo on my master. I'm tweaking it up to do a molded in mq-1...and I'm going to make a larger version of the whole bucket soon.

Here he is detailed and primed. The visor mounts and mq-1 are installed. I used Krylon Ultra Flat, which I'm thinking is the way to go. As a side note I was using Rustoleum primer, but found that it would cause subsequent coats to crackle in some areas.

I've had about 3 bad cans in a row of the rustoleum painters touch 2x, is that what you were using before Krylon? I'd usually only get one good spray session before the can just pooped out. I've since switched to duplicolor (the green stuff superjedi uses) and (gone back to) mr. Surfacer 1200.

Hmmm...I picked up a can of Duplicolor last week. I'm gonna try it on my next paintup probably. I've never seen Mr surfacer (before I just now googled it). I guess that's a high-end primer? It looks nice.

That ain't no lie, I followed that whole build thread, every time it was all "cool, he's done something new!!!" Then "Damn! More bondo and still more sanding!!!! He just bondo'd and sanded YESTERDAY!!" LOL But the end result was worth it. One of these days I'm going to have one of your helmets!

Ok, I want to share what I've observed about acrylic MM Panzer Olive Green/Grun 1943.

On the left is straight from the jar. The right is mixed 2:1 with Tamiya XF white acrylic (no reason for tamiya other than it's what I had on hand).

MM POG has some interesting dynamics depending on the type of light its subjected to. My conclusion is that it's not a bad choice for ESB. Even if you don't love the lightness of 2:1 POG:white you have the flexibility to go 3:1, 4:1 or straight from the bottle if you want.

Upon your recommendation in another paint up, I went with MM POG, lightened as you suggested. I was very happy with the results. Another upshot is, is the color is not hard to reproduce if you have to mix up some more. I had to re-spray the cheeks and to my eye can't tell the difference in the dome and the cheeks. Which is good, because I have to reshoot some on the dome that peeled with some masking tape after doing my kill stripes.

Your grey doesn't match the grey in the AOSW pic you posted when exposed to the flash it lightens a bit....think you might try something a touch darker....Euro Dark Grey is pretty good match to the SP Lark Grey most folks used back when floquils were available. Should work out better for you.

Thanks, that's a good catch. I went ahead and mixed in some black (10:1) and brushed over it. I'll come back to the lower cheek after I finish the upper.

I thought I would go ahead and post the upper black part of the cheeks along with the retouched gray areas. I went the lazy route and gouged out the damage after I traced down my gray layer.

I've finally finished the red face and keyslots. It's all layered so far..dark gray, maroonish purplish color, and my red mix. This time I took Insignia red with a drop of black per ml. I needed to brighten it a touch so i misted tamiya red over it.

In natural room lighting it's not quite so pale. It's kind of out of balance until the silver and weathering hits it. I like to give it a black wash which also tones it down a bit as well.
