ThirdEThree GMH PP2 paint up!

Hey Guys,
I couldn't decide if I wanted to post this when it was completed, or if I should post it as a WIP. So, after some sound advice I figured I would get some feedback as progress rolled along. Ive already completed a few stages of work, so Ill try to get everyone up to speed...

Now I was one of the lame guys that found my inner Fett well past the time that the GMH project was initiated and I caught on to this somewhere in the last six months when it seemed like the last of the initial buyers had been receiving theirs from FettPride.
I was seriously bummed out with the thoughts of never owning one until the secondary market opened up and not only did I score one, but last week I was able to get my greedy hands on another. Both Resin, numbers 47 and 73. After a bit of a debate as to being up to the challenge and questioning my skills to pull this off, I said "Screw it, let's do this!"... This will be the the painting of number 73.

I started with the "prep" work of cutting and mounting the visor. I wanted to preserve every detail of this helmet due to the nature of its history, so I did absolutely nothing to the exterior other than applying two coats of Floquil primer, and a matching two coats of Floquil bright silver.

I began the paint process as I've liked to do with my past paint ups, with the back panels. Using Rafalfett's (Mr.Perfection) stencils I masked out the Bright Silver damage and layed down a light grey custom mixture of Reefer grey enamel and Floquil primer(3:1) with a hint of Bright Silver mixed in to preserve luminosity. After scrutinizing over the few photos of the original PP2, It seemed the back panels had a slight reflective quality, and by adding the bright silver adds just a slight shimmer to the opaque gray mixture and helps give this layer a true base metal look.
This was followed up by a patterned SP Lark Dark Gray misted layer. (Thanks Superjedi.)

After masking the next layer of damage, the next paint to be laid down was the infamous custom color known "Jayvee's Chameleon Green". (I learned of this formula from the man himself. Not only is he a meticulous painter, he is a wealth of knowledge and a heck of a nice guy!) when this masking layer was removed it revealed the awesome varying shades of Gray beneath. This was followed up by a misting of the same mixture I used for the base metal. I tried to accentuate the 'light' areas of the patterned gray that was applied in the previous step.
Again, by studying reference pictures, I was able to apply some of the topical scratches both with paint, and using the super fine point of an X-acto blade.

Next up: Key slots!
After masking the Silver damage, I applied the first layer of my "Base Metal" mix followed by multiple layers of misting. SPLark Dark gray to create shadows and to contrast the Bright Silver, another misted layer consisting of a few drops of Testors 'Flat Brown' enamel and some Floquil 'Up Armor Yellow' combined with some enamel thinner in order to make it transparent. I applied this extremely light according to the the photo of the keys to the original PP2. Topical scratches were added using 'Base Metal' and this was followed by a misted layer of primer along the flat areas of the key slots to give it that dusty look.

Back Trim:
I began the back trim in the same fashion as the key slots. Masked the silver, sprayed 'Base metal'.
I then masked the next layer in order to apply the next color: 'Sandy Rose'. I had to experiment a bit to get this to where I thought it was right.
I came up with a mixture of Caboose/Flesh/Reefer White (3:1:1) with a few drops of Reefer Gray in order to add a hint of gray to it. this was then re-masked for a layer of Caboose. SP Lark Dark Gray was added topically and the whole back trim was misted with Reefer Gray and my Primer(dust) mist was added along the top edge.

Well, thats where I am up to date.
More updates coming soon! Please give me any input you guys may have, I'd love the advice!

Ahh, beautiful my good man. As I said when I was lucky enough to see some 'sneek peeks' of this paintup, it is all looking lovely, and with your abilities, it will no doubt look amazing. Awesome my friend, look forward to the next updates! :)

Man that is awsome so far, that is why I have not done any painting yet with my GMH, cause I want to get it right like the masters we have here, and us Aussies are in force with talent at the moment, but all the top notch painterd here are something to try too live up too, again well done this going to be brilliant!
cheers(y)

Hey All,
Here's an update of the completed Upper and Lower cheeks, and Mandibles.
Lower cheeks are a custom base color of RLM 70 mixed with Panzer Olive, and Floquil Primer (6:1:1) misted with both SP Lark Dark Gray and Reefer Gray
Upper Cheeks are FS35042 Flat Sea Blue Misted with same tones as the Lower cheeks.
"Sandy Rose" on the mandibles is a custom mix of all Floquil. Caboose/Flesh/Reefer White(4:1:1) with a few drops of Reefer Gray to add a hint of Gray.
All tiny knicks and scratches were added topically using a 10/0 liner brush. I will also study the reference pics more in order to add more if necessary.

Wow, nice! You use a 10/0 brush??? What is that. . . a single hair on a handle?
I thought my 3/0 brush was pretty small.

Now take a few deep breaths and meditate before you start on that crazy dome.

Hey Guys,
I have a new update! I took SJ's advice, took a few deep breaths and jumped head first into the deep end of the ridiculous dome of the PP2.
Until you break all the steps down, you never realize how much work is actually involved. (SJ- Increased respect for you and the fact that you attacked two of these back to back)
I approached this in typical layered fashion, by masking my silver damage first. I then sprayed my custom base metal color that Ive used throughout the whole helmet. The next step was the tricky one. I stenciled out the combined damage for both the base silver and the darker gray found surrounding the silver. This needed to be 'reverse masked'. By using a combination of taping off the individual sections and using masking fluid to block out the areas outside of the damage, you're left with patterns in which you can paint the interior of, instead of the exterior.
Here is where the previously used back panel misting patterns come into play. By using both reference photos in the gallery and Raf's stencils I was able to spray in the dark gray gradient patterns, using a mix of SP Lark Dark Gray combined with some Floquil Weathered Black to create enough contrast and stand out once the Green of the dome is applied.
Now the real fun begins. I removed all of the existing masking fluid to avoid confusion. I then re stenciled my Base Metal/Dark Gray areas, and re masked all of my Silver damage to allow me to spray the same custom Green mix I used for the lower cheeks. I think that part removed a year from my life. There was so much masking fluid on the dome it looked like I shot it with paint balls, lol!!

After painting the Green, I then misted the areas surrounding the damage with a combination of Reefer Gray and Sp Lark Dark Gray. Masking fluid was removed for the 'Big Reveal' and then small details were applied. Kill stripes were applied Using Floquil SP Scarlet. Turn signals were painted Sandy Rose and RLM70. Small Silver specks and scratches were applied as well as Reefer White paint marks and blobs, and the cherry on top being the yellow crayon. I wasnt to sure as to how far I wanted to go with the topical damage. If you check out the 'bedroom' reference photos, the original PP2 is in pretty rough shape. Applying everything was something that could make or break the paint up. Id love to know what you guys have for opinions/suggestions.

It appears that I, like many others, seem to be waiting for Gav's awesome metal ears. So in the meantime, I decided to paint my resin FP ears and RF.
After a nice coat of silver, these guys were masked and misted with some super thin Testors Flat Brown and Weathered Black. some 0000 steel wool buffed them nicely and leveled out any stark contrast left by the masking. They were then attached using Superjedi's countersink/epoxy method.
Once again, please let me know what everyone thinks of progress so far. If there isn't any too significant, I think this guy is almost done!! Thanks for checking this out and thanks to those who have offered advice along the way. Huge thanks to Raf for his stencils. I wouldn't have even attempted it without those!
here it is...

I like your style, thats a really nice job. I actually revisited this a few times just to look it over again. Are you still not taking commissions? I'd love to have one of your helmets.
