Teekay YYC's 1st Animefan FP Premium ESB

TeekayYYC

New Hunter
Hi. I recently received my Animefan FP Premium ESB helmet, for my first paintup. Gulp. I will try to do this beauty justice.

I’ve built 501st centurion level stormtrooper armour, so I figure this needed to be my next challenge. I do plan to attempt Level III on this, so if I need to do something ‘now’ to allow an easier (or possible) ‘later’ install of a Level III item, please let me know. I’ve watched and am re-watching Welsh Warrior’s videos for tips, but will be following TF’s layered process.

I’m going to try to post more pics during the process than I did with my TK. And here’s my first batch. I really look forward to everyone’s advice (although I seem to have ignored any I’ve heard already, as you’ll see......grrrr). I already feel like I haven’t done as much research as I did with my TK, but I think it’s just the sheer size of task in front of me that makes me think that......so I’m prepared to forge ahead, anyways! Let the journey begin.

Jaydon

  • Dremeled the visor out.......Did I mark it out like the video says?.....No. I left more physical damage from the Dremel than would pass, so had to bondo some of my damage......I can’t believe I damaged that pretty thing. So I introduced myself to ‘bondo’. (All the major fixes have been corrected, finally, but I haven’t uploaded those pictures yet)

  • Sanded, wet sanded, and washed.

  • First shot at priming, and noticed a couple fixes I still needed to do, so a little more bondo and sanding.

  • Right now, I’m struggling to find good photos of what the physical damage (in all the areas) is supposed to look like......I have the reference photo on TDH that has the arrows edited into it, found in the templates thread, but it’s not the best quality. I’m currently going through more paintups to find other examples, and using Welsh Warrior screenshots as a guide. He mentions on his video about placing the ‘holes in the right place’......I presume the physical damage has deeper crevices in some places, but I can’t seem to find good references. Q: Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  • I’m also going to re-do my DIY visor. I have 3mm acrylic, which is too light, so I’ll try to add some window tint to the inside of it. In the meantime, I’ll use my original DIY visor during the paintup.

  • In the attached screenshot from Welsh Warrior’s video, the stencil is placed against the edge, leaving exposed edges. Q: How are the edges (shown with arrows) painted, using stencils?
  • Additionally, the circled section doesn't appear to be scaled correctly. Q: How close do the stencils need to fit, and how do they need to be placed? I haven't been able to find threads yet that describe the stencil scaling process.

  • Finally, I read somewhere that the Prepro 2 helmet is the same as the ESB helmet. Q: If this correct, can I use photo references of either?

Congrats on the new bucket, I recently finished my Animefan budget bucket not long ago. As for your build, drill, cut, and mount all of you additional stuff first, or at least fit it all before painting. That way you don't accidentally mar the paint when finished, all you'll have to do is just mount everything in place afterwards. I also sized Raf's stencils to the Animefan helmet, found in my other thread here: http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f23/scaled-stencils-animefan-budget-bucket-55243/

The budget and premium should be the same size. Just follow the instructions when printing. Remember that in some areas the stencils will have to be shifted ever so slightly to line up with some edges. Hope this helps.

Here's mine before and after paint to show where the damage lines up with the stencils, good luck with your build!

Yes, I tried those out......great job. They are very close.

That's the only thing I could see working.....ie. shifting the stencil as you go. I'm glad to know others have had to do this. Thanks.

Here is an image of the physical damage. thanks to Rafalfett for the image :)

Thanks, Lou....that's one of the photos that has confused me, though. I'm struggling to see what the 2 photos on the left are showing. The two on the right, I think I'm comfortable with. Would someone be able to photoshop an arrow or color in the damaged area(s)?

Also, in Welsh Warrior's video, he shows some chips along the bottom edges, and nothing along the earpiece. I'm afraid I'm looking at incorrect references for ESB.

Glad they're working for you, I've been waiting to see if the results would be replicated!

The pic on the left is referring to the hairline fracture on the inner cheek.

The other pic on the left shows the chip out of the edge of the top edge of the lower mandible, right under the visor.

What armydad said is correct. i know of the chips your talking about along the bottom of the cheek but this is the only reference i have for Physical damage. I think Raf made this image either before that damage was realized to be there, or its post filming damage. It was however incorporated on the FPH2 ESB helmet...Rubio did a nice review of that helmet and i think his photos show that particular damage, so that would be the next best thing to use a reference.

Also that image above is 100% the ESB helmet. there is only one ESB hero helmet, and the paint damage is unmistakable. Also, keep in mind the helmet had more damage on it by the time the ROTJ SE scenes were filmed (which is also the condition on the touring suit fro MOM and the other past tours) The current condition of the ESB hero helmet has more damage on it than it did during the ROTJ SE as well.

And as far as the stencils, yes you sometimes need to shift them slightly to get it all the edges.

Great info. Thanks!

Have I identified the correct areas, specifically that hairline fracture on the inner cheek? I don't see that one in your photo.

Yep, that's them. I didn't put the hair line one on my helmet, there's some silver damage that starts the "line" on raff's stencil, I was happy with that. So mine only has the two chips on the mandibles and the gouge on the other cheek.

Hi Teekay,
As accurate as stencils can be, it's still tricky to get a 2D printout to conform to a 3D object. The more curved the surface, the greater the stencil
will be "skewed." Think of a Mercator projection map of the world versus a globe. They look pretty different!
The best you can attempt is to scale the templates to the specific helmet you're working on. As Armydad mentioned, he did Animefan helmet owners
a huge favor by scaling them. Even still, you may need to slightly adjust their position as you're working on certain areas.

As for this question:

  • Finally, I read somewhere that the Prepro 2 helmet is the same as the ESB helmet. Q: If this correct, can I use photo references of either?

NO! This is not true in the slightest. The PrePro 3 helmet is very close to the ESB. It's so close in fact that Master Replicas confused it for the ESB when
they put out their helmet back around 2008. But it is its own unique paint scheme and has details that set it apart from ESB. If you're going for an accurate
ESB paint job, by all means use existing reference of that particular helmet. There's certainly plenty of it out there! (y)

Have fun with your paint up.

Are the stencils for the mandibles supposed to wrap over the edge that directly contacts the visor? I'm struggling with understanding how to paint those edges. Also applies to the top part of the visor.

No I don't believe so, they should lay flat on the outside flat surfaces. The inside edges on the actual helmet are fairly thin, a few mm I think. I just focused on the outside surfaces and left the over spray for the inside edges.

I don't have an official answer for you, but what I did is wrap the damage at the corner of the edge down the side of the edge. So, if a silver chip is along the edge for say 1/2", I painted the side of the edge silver for that 1/2". Or at least as much as I could without getting it on my visor.
