    Jul 26, 2012, 7:04 PM - Superjedi--GMH PP2 for ?????????? #1

    Hi all!
Here we go again. Yes, it's back to back PP2 helmets!
I received another helmet for another commission today. The owner has
asked that they not be identified, but I've been given a green light to do
    a progress thread.

    Here's a pic that includes 3 GMHs!

My GMH is inside the display case (top right in the photo). Shabad's is nearly
complete on top of the case, and the newly arrived helmet is up there, too.

    Stay tuned!

It looks so big compared to the GMH which makes me realize how much bigger my MLCs are compared to the real deal!

    UPDATE: July 28th, 2012

OK, how about some progress. This is a progress thread after all.
Superjedi, quit your clowning around. . . wait a minute.

Prep is done. The visor and keyslots were cut and trimmed and sanded and folded and spindled
and mutilated as per usual. The extra material around the bottom of the helmet was taken care
of as well. A coat of delicious Duplicolor primer was sprayed on, and the helmet was masked
for the color coats on the back panels.
I used my usual 2 shades of gray to get the cloudy patterns that will show through the dark
    green after it's applied.

The photos never really show how things look by eye. The color difference between these 2 grays
is a bit more apparent in person. However, most of it is going to be covered after the next step.

Next up: masking fluid in preparation for some greenage!

    UPDATE: July 29th, 2012

Rockin' on with the back panels.
Here are a couple of shots of the masking fluid applied.

I've sprayed the dark green on, and now I'll wait a few hours for it
to dry before I remove the liquid mask. More to come later this afternoon.

Hi Luke. Still waiting on your visor to get here. Hopefully early this week.

    UPDATE #2: July 29th 2012

    Back panels-a-mundo!
They're pretty much finished. I removed the liquid mask to reveal the base grays, and
then I misted over the panels with another medium gray (Reefer).

I then added the really small pale gray scratches and chips with my 000 brush.

The silver has also been done.

Here's the keyslot area. Lots of tiny scratches in this section!

Next stage will be to paint the dome and cheeks.
Hope you're enjoying the progress, mystery helmet owner.

    UPDATE: August 2nd, 2012:

No pics does not equal no progress.

Got quite a bit done the last few days. I'm seeing silver in my sleep.

A bit more silver to go till I'm ready to do the misting process.

    Yes, more Pre-Pros!

    UPDATE: August 5th, 2012

OK, the weekend is winding down, and I finished one of the more lengthy stages of the PP2 paint job.
I applied the dark gray damage to the cheeks and dome. This is an interesting stage, because some
of the damage is "hard edged" and can be done with a brush. Other areas must be airbrushed on,
allowing some of the silver to show through.

I generally wait to do the very small scratches until most of the large areas are placed. It makes
it easier to gauge their positions.

Everything is getting closer to its final configuration. Now that the gray is on there, I can go
back with my detail brushes and do the overlying silver.

Some of the small silver damage below the dent will be applied after the kill stripes are done.

It's really starting to look like something now.

Wizard, eh? I don't remember going to Hogwarts.

    UPDATE: August 6th, 2012

    Stripeys! Stripey wipeys!
Pics look a little washed out. It's very cloudy and rainy today and I don't have good
light in my hobby room. But you get the idea.

Always one of the most nerve wracking parts of the paint job for me. . . all that tape. . .

    Next up: some mandible action.

    Thanks, ABE.

    UPDATE: August 8th, 2012

OK, some final silver and some fine scratches before the mandible madness begins.

There will be just a little more silver/gray to do toward the end of the paint job.

Here's the back of this crazy dome.

I use a compass point to do those insanely fine chips and scratches.

    Mandible base coat tomorrow.

    UPDATE: August 12th, 2012

The helmet is in the final detailing stages now. Completed pics to come within the next day or so.

I thought I'd take some time to address how I treat the resin ears. I think I may have shown this
in one of my older threads, so this might be a rerun for some of you. I like this method of ear installation.
It's pretty easy, and it allows for quick removal if you need to take them off for anything.

I began by sanding the ears. Not a lot to do on these, and they're really sharp casts!

I held the ears to the helmet and marked the location of the attachment points on the backs
of the ears. Then I used a cone-shaped Dremel grinding bit to dish out some of the resin.

This will allow me to attach some small machine screws which will hold the ears onto the helmet.
Here's the type of hardware I use.

The Dremeled holes are slightly larger than the small screw heads.

I double checked to make sure the entire screw head would sit below the surface.

I mixed up some 5-minute epoxy. Devcon is a good brand, as is JB Kwik. Any type will do really.

I dragged the screw heads through the epoxy, spinning them to coat them evenly.

Then, I set them into the Dremeled holes in the ears. I watched them closely for 5 or 10 minutes
to see if they started to sag in any direction. After 10 minutes, they're pretty solid.

I'll give them another few hours to really cure, then I'll paint them. Once they're all painted up,
I just put them in place and use the small washers and nuts to secure them to the helmet.
    Easy peasy!

Genius! I had recently tried the epoxy thing with an RF stalk, but never thought to use the ear cap as the attachment point. Seems obvious now.

I've been using this technique on pretty much every helmet I've done with resin ears.
Never worked on a helmet with RF electronics, so never had to consider mounting a servo.
I guess with a servo, I'd use rare earth magnets for the outer ear cap.

With this method, if you want to manually raise and lower the RF stalk, you can.

    FINAL UPDATE: August 14th, 2012

Finished! I know I didn't take as many progress pics during the final portions
of the paint job this time around. I just got into it and didn't break out the camera
    like I should have.

The helmet will soon be on its way to its owner. So here is a final selection of
pics for those who have been following along.

It's been fun painting this helmet, and I sure hope the owner is happy with it!
