    SUPER TROOPER WIP!

Hey guys- Well after recieving my new FP budget from ASOK, and essentially seeing this shot of the glossy super trooper, I decided to take a stab at it myself. Theres just something about this classy, non-weathered lid that really catches my eye. Also, notice how the red/blue arrows mirror that of the ROTJ fett. Anyhow, below are some pics post dremmeling, sanding, tad of puddy (from dremmeling ; ), and the second coat of primer. This afternoon I plan to hit the first coat of gloss white (rustoleum). Ill keep you guys updated as I progress through this WIP.

I think he means "mirror" in the sense of 'copy' like the sense of 'mirrored' hard drive is not actually a reversed image or enantiomer of the original byte order.

    Re: SUPER TROOPER WIP!

Hey guys- : ), yes I meant mirrored as in "matches"..mainly referring to the colors (red and blue). I thought it was a nice suttle touch. Although there seems to be a couple different versions in the gallery, I really liked the image I posted and will use this and one other as a reference. Correct me if im wrong but the RF seems to be the same as ESB?
    Thanks guys

Thanks BG- Ya, ive seen some pics w/ the borden bare metal, and some white...Ill probablly do that topically along w/ the arrows. Many of the pics in the gallery are black and white which makes it difficult to decipher the small details.
    Thanks man

    Re: SUPER TROOPER WIP!

No problem , its very likley that all the arows were that same colours there for you can use the PP2 and ROTJ for the colour refrence for them and seeing as the bordens are all bare metal it makes sense ,

Hey guys- What are your thoughts on weathering the super trooper up a bit? Maybe some smoked edges, as well as crevaces etc? Ive been kicking around the idea.

B - Yes, we definitely have to get together. Are you talking about SDCC? or LB? I'm going to attempt LB, but I think SD is SOLD OUT. I'm not sure. I'll look into it and let you know. Now, in regards to weathering.....I would say, "no." Since I don't think it ever saw any screen time, weathering would completely dimenish the accuracy. With that being said, it's your build and you gotta go where the feeling takes you! Either way, it's gonna look awesome!

    Re: SUPER TROOPER WIP!

Hey all- Just an update. I had a very minor one day setbck as I wasnt happy w/ a couple little flaws that were slightly visible.. one on the brow, and one on the right lower ear. With some great tutleage from obro and deadland I was able to perservere! I wet sanded the heck out of those spots w/ 800 and walah..near perfect : )!!! Thanks so much guys..I will resume w/ another coat of gloss white tomorrow.
Once I complete this does anyone know how to get that little extra shine thats needed???
    Thanks

    Re: SUPER TROOPER WIP!

Hey guys- Well, I think ive gotten this thing as glossy as I can. Ive discovered several things during the process of trying to get a high sheen using rattlecan.
    1. Although the gloss white is fairly shiney, you have to spray it thick which eventually leads to running.
    2. Wet sanding really gets rid of many imperfections including the running.
    3. Without an auto paint job, this is as shiney as I can get this beast!

Although, its not quite as brilliant as id like Im pretty happy w/ the preliminary results. Sorry the pics arent great..iphone doesnt quite do it justice. Im going to take a look at it in the morning and after buffing, if its not to my liking I will AGAIN wetsand, and recoat w/ the gloss white and not coat it in order to preserve the gloss.

Sometimes you have to be careful with glosscoats out of a rattlecan because you can get a weird effect where you overlap the strokes sometimes.
At least that's been my experience

Have you considered an extensive auto polish and waxing over your perfect wet sanding? I wonder if that might work?

Hey Fett7-I thought about that but went w/ the high gloss laquer thinking it woul be better...not real shiney though. Is there someting I can buff it with like a grade of paper? Or should I try the wax?

Hey Maud- I dont have any experience w/ auto polish but this sounds like it might be better than what im doing. What does this entail?

    Re: SUPER TROOPER WIP!

Did you use the Rustoleum High Gloss Professional? (The silver can, there are two different types) I use that for all the TK/TB buckets I paint and you can get a very nice gloss from them but you have to spray it a little heavier that what would be normal.

Here is a pic of a TK bucket, this was just the paint -- no wetsand, no finishing, nothing.

After it's all finished I usually hit them with a nice coating of wax, either Maguire's gold class or the NXT.

Love this helmet you are doing and I would not weather it, I am usually a nut for weathering but in the case of this particular helmet, leaving it bright white and shiny is the way to go.

    Re: SUPER TROOPER WIP!

Normally, I do very light coats on everything BUT this Rustoleum (I have heard appliance epoxy works well too but I have never tried it). Yeah the first coat, i'll go decently light, give it maybe 5 minutes or so, then go with a heavy coating for the second spray. I will then go a third IF necessary, if you go really thick the cure time goes up of course but with all the helmets I have done, I have had great results but it's a fine line, a bit more and you get drips. The last TB I did, I had one slight drip on the edge of the visor but it was hardly noticeable (well it was to me haha) but the owner was fine with it.

To light and you get an orange peeled finish, it's a bit finicky but it has great results and holds up to abuse really well. The wax helps too, I also us a Toyo Guard synthetic that a friend of mine got with his Toyota, the stuff works awesome on both paint and abs alike.

There is two types of Rustoleums and sometimes people grab the wrong one, I was curious which on the OP used?

If you want to go with a clear coat try something like this. It gives good results.

    2K clear coat: Spraymax

It should make it look more like an automotive finish. Nice work so far. Keep it up.

    Re: SUPER TROOPER WIP!

Yup, as SmuWindu said, you can find them at Home Depot and Lowe's and even some Wal*Mart Supercenters as well, they sometimes have the black and the white.

    This is what you are looking for;

The can on the left, that is the professional, the regular can is white, the pro is a chrome silver color as you can see, make sure you pick up the pro. The new cans have a better nozzle on them now as well, really has a better flow. Try it on some scrap first to get the feel so you can see how to get the finish you want, you have to go a little heavier with it to get the glossy finish. There is plenty in one can so no worries there.

Here is a pic of a TB bucket I just finished for a squad mate, again NO sanding, clear or any kind of finishing, this was straight from the can. I prepped it with the primer you see in the pic and sanded it down, then primed and sanded before painting. Good prep is very important as well.

I gave it a nice coat of wax before delivery but that was it. Cure time is slow on this stuff, I give it a full 7 days cure time (i'll paint details and stuff before then but I like to give it plenty of time to cure up, once it does it's a durable finish).

Hope this is helpful for you on your project, I would LOVE to get another Fett bucket and paint it up in the Super Trooper, just to put on the shelf.

Haha I could not explain that to anybody, any better than that. I will have to remember that for the future. Spray it heavy until you think it's about to drip but JUST before lol. It is stressful.

looks good only reason I asked about the borden is to have as little paint on it as possible so its crispy clean looking

Oh got it...Ill sand it nice and smooth. Ive been so preoccupied w/ the whole gloss thing that I wasnt even thinking about it LOL! Same thing on the attached ear piece. On the removeable section I already have the metal section done : )...Thoughts on the RF and weathering? I dont think its weathered?

Looks good man, yeah anywhere you are going to attach something, just sand it back down smooth again. That paint is very thick, BUT don't sand any of it until it's fully cured or it can get real gummy.

    Re: SUPER TROOPER WIP!

Hey PF- Ya, I figured. Any thoughts on how to do the metal bits? I planned on just sanding the borden down, tape off around it, and spray the metalic.. or, sand it down, tape just around it and hand paint w/ a brush? Not sure yet.. any thoughts? also, is the RF weathered at the top???
    Thanks

Finally located the "meet boba fett" video on SW.com. The borden and right ear bits are indeed metal : ). Im still going w/ a red and blue arrow as in one of my good ref pics it appears just as the ROTJ does..im not saying its 100% accurate but thats how it appears to me at this point. just layed the black down on the RF and will hit w/ one more light coat tomorrow.

Hey all- Got the metal bits done w/ R n B and will post pics soon! Any thoughts on clear coat or laquer to seal? At this point im afraid to lose any gloss that I was able to achieve. Is it necessary to coat the pro gloss?
    Thanks

I would not worry about any type of sealer or lacquer, I suppose you could if you want but I have never had to with any of the TB/TK buckets I have painted with this stuff, so that is about two years now.

Alright guys..after installing the visor and not being 150% happy w/ the gloss finish, well, I decided to uninstall, resand (dont laugh deadland and Fett7), and recoat. Yep approximatley 35 "re-coats" : ). FINALLY im happy, well about 140% anyway but whos counting? Here are some pics..if you look closely you can actually see my reflection.

Hey Fett-LOL... The ear cap isnt attached yet as its already completed as well. Ive studied the video reference a dozen times and the only parts on the rt ear that are metal are the bottom as you see in the pic, and the detachable part just the bottom of it.Similar to the esb fett I guess. Thanks man!

Right the part on the side of the top of the right ear that is NORMALLY detachable is metal but its part of the budget you have...i dont really wanna photoshop a pic to show u but I will if i need to...look closely at the pic...the part of the bottom ear u RnB'd above it that whole piece is left metal as well, just tape off around it and RnB that part

Hey Fett..I think I see..at the top (tip) of the removeable piece? Could that just be lighting? In the vieo its not like that. If its not too much of a pain in the butt could u just mark the area?
    Thanks

    Re: SUPER TROOPER WIP!

Gotcha- Its so confusing because in that all metal one w/ the stormy the arrows are not painted so I assumed it was some "pre-thought" type of photo like a preliminary. Also, I had asok do the whole lid white resin that way I could do the bits myself. In hindsite, and finding out this lid is way more difficult than I expected : ), I wouldve had him do the right ear in cc..so for future, anyone wanting to do a supertrooper have asok leave the right ear cc : ).
So Fett, here is a pic of what ive done (which is the same as the video). You are suggesting to do the whole thing R/B? With the uncertainty do u think I could go either way? IMHO I think the all metal looks like its just not completed yet..idk LOL!

I have to say..you are indeed a walking almanac of fett subdletees LOL! You sucked me in! Ok, so, I R/B the last bit on the rt ear for accuracy sake : ). Although the pics arent that great u can decipher the white cap from the metal. Also, I even R/B'd the inside where you wont even see but..just had to do it!

    Thanks Man
