StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
I figure since I am doing this for my brother G Fett (aka Studio Fett) as a favor instead of commission, I would post a thread to keep the preasure on me to improve upon what I am doing. Now for those of you who know Greg then you know that he is one of the most talented men in the universe with a pencil and a pc for his art. However, he BUTCHERED a lid in a way as describable as a masacre. He brought it to me in hopes of giving it some CPR. I will post some "Before" shots later (just to totally give him heck) yes I am that guy).
Now I am no SpideyFett or Webchief with a rattlecan so this is and always will bea hobbie of practice for me over and over again.
So sit back and give me some feedback folks.
Ivan
The crooked pictures on the wall show some of G's work hanging in my office. The man is a genius!!!

Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
I had no idea he was your bro? :lol
And I totally agree, what he does with his art is something to behold... very talented!
So big bro is taking the reins on the lid project... I'll look forward to the progress pics bruv. :thumbsup

Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
Do you have a closer shot of the trooper drawing? Looks cool.
-
Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
He is a lot nicer than my blood related siblings so I will claim him! The TK drawing is a Matt Bush work that I got at Fan Days II in TX last month. Check out Studio Fetts website at
http://studiofett.com/
Just turn your speakers down a little if you are at work... The website doesn't do his work justice. You really have to see it in person to "feel" it.

Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
I wish my big brother wanted to help me with my stuff! Instead I always end up helping him with his.

Wow, I have so many pics of the progress so far on this lid but they are all on my cell and I keep forgetting the SD card reader at home. So, I decided to post the "before" pics from our favorite Fett brother (this is just to rib him as we know he is a brilliant artist):D

Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
Be nice, I am pretty sure he used a paintball gun from 25 feet to get the right effect...

Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
Yeah, yeah, rub it in, I am a talentless wit when it comes to my bucket. Hopefully I make up for it in my artwork.

Okay, I finally have some pics up as I am way farther along than I originally thought. Here are some progress pics.
I did something a little different this time around by "dirtying the paint by mysting flat black into the greens. It looks better in person after Knocking it down with 0000 grade steele wool.

Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
I ran into a HUGE problem with the paint when I went to remove the masking tape. Look at these boogers! Any suggestions as to what went wrong? It wasn't temp and I gave ample time to dry. It just didn't want to adhere. I had a similar problem when I taped off the lower mandable two days later? I am using weak tape and there is NO way it should be doing this...
-
Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
Any thoughts asto why this is happening???? Bueler??? Anyone??? Bueler???
-
Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
Your tape is too tacky. How long did you let it sit? Some paint doesnt adhere as well to ther paint as you would think it would.
I have had that happen too. It looks like the green just didnt bite. What temp are you painting at? garage? cold?
I know I gave that helmet to him, and it was a first or second test cast. It was lumpy and I never sanded, or even cleaned it. But it looks like your paint isnt setting to the undercoat. Not the actual helmet.
Also, and this is a wierd one but sometimes if your painting multiple things, the 'overspray' in the area will actually settle on your painted item. And the next coat will not adhere as the paint dust (any dust even or moisture) will act as a release agent.
I suggest letting it dry for 72 hrs (give or take depending on paint) and then wash it with a degreaser of some sort (even windex) to make sure you get everything off of it before you paint another layer.
Overall. think of it as payback for giving him a hard time:)

Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
On another note, theres paint mask thats folded paper with a small thin edge of paint on it. I prefer that (or making my own out of paper) as opposed to putting on the heavy masking tape. A full piece of 4 inch tape placed on a surface creates quite a bit more suction when u remove it than a small edge line.

Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
dang, boomer, this sucks...i have not had this happen to me, except when i didnt let the paint dry long enough...sometimes the humidity in the air keeps the paint from curing well, and if you only let it dry for 12 hours, that may also be a problem....
-
Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
Dang! Now you see one of the problems I was running into, and I was using painters tape, as well, I just thought I was being dumb.
Thanks for working so hard on it, sorry it is being such a pain, please don't kick my bucket.

Very good stuff. I waited twelve hours then applied the taped section. This is all the orig paint I used on my lid and had better results. I think its a cursed lid! MuHAHAHA!!!!:suprise

Very true except that the very same thing happened on the mandable after a 72 hour cure time...I am stumped. It just feels like one step forward and three steps back.>:

Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
It's the silver
I had the same issues with Jet Pack painting
Paint just doesn't wanna stick to rattle-can silver
I fixed the problem by clear coating the silver beforehand (doesn't help you now, I know)

i've had that happen. HUGE pain in the butt...
silver seems to be the worst, but any paint can do it. every few projects i sweep up my paint booth and there's usually enough powdery paint in there to 1/2 fill my dustpan.
if enough of that dust settles on the helmet, you're in trouble. i usually rub the stuff down with a damp cloth and dry it thoroughly before doing the next layer.

Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
ya, when i did my first lid, the rubies*****, i used the rustoleum sliver on it, then did a layer of paint on top of that, the spruce green for the dome and cheeks, and the green didnt set well either...when i began to sand and take it off, i could tell that the silver didnt dry well, and it was gooey and all...i dont think i let it dry long enough to cure...talk about pain in the rear...

Man, as soon as you guys said it the light went on!!! I had to do two coats to help hide the previous paint (after sanding forever). I remember clearly painting in direct sunlight and seeing the metal flafes falling everywhere...man, so simple it hurts...:cheers

Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
well, it looks like you really recovered well, brother...the damage is coming out quite nicely...i have not had the guts to do a full layered paint job, but you seem to have it down...i especially like the dent, and the "swoosh" to the back of the lid...the kill stripes look good, and the silver damage fits in nicely...on the main dent, i would put a little more damage between the dent and the swoosh...not much, but on the "upper right" of the dent, when looking at the pics, it seems it needs a little more there...:thumbsup:cheers

Re: StudioFett Lid (via rattlecan) Pic Heavy
Yup, the paint dust will do it every time. My basement is thick with the stuff... it's real nasty!

Yup. I hope it turns out better than mine. The more I look at mine the less I like it. Yours has a better feel and the silver has a better start than mine did.
