stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Since there seem to always be threads about paint colors for RotJ, I figured I'd create some search-fodder.
This is just what i like. This isn't "right". You might hate the results. The cans might explode, sending shrapnel into your eyes. I'm not to blame for any of that!! Enough folks have said they like my suit that I guess it's at least ok.
Personally, I think you should seek out the colors that YOU like best, rather than just trusting someone else to make the decision. It's your helmet, so make it you YOU want it, not how I want it! :)
Also note that I'm not mentioning anything about the subtle weathering... mists of grey and brown, graphite powder, razor scratches, etc...
This is my helmet:
http://stormtrooperguy.com/gallery/a...tjhelm%7E0.jpg
And here's what I painted it with:
http://stormtrooperguy.com/gallery/a...rotjhelmet.jpg
From left to right:
Grey Primer
Metallic Silver
Moss Green
Sage Green
Claret Wine
Hunter Green
Navy Blue
Flat Black
Start off with a coat of primer, followed by a coat of silver.
Mask off the silver parts with latex masking fluid, then spray a coat of primer. This will act as a grey base, since some grey damage shows through.
From there, you'll be masking off various parts of the helmet for different things. Since this is just a paint list, not a real tutorial, I'll just leave it at that. :)
For the dome and cheeks, I use a mix of colors. I basically mist one on top of the other until i like it.
The main colors there are sage green and moss green, using more of the sage than the moss.
The visor is done with a coat of flat black, followed by misted layers of Claret Wine until I like it. The Claret Wine has a pinkish color against white/grey, but on the black it looks good.
The mandibles I use flat black as the base, then mist on a bit of navy blue and a bit of hunter green, usually followed by a light mist of black.
For the back, I use hunter green.
The kill stripes I hand paint in with acrylics once it's all dry. Just go to any art supply place and pick up a bottle of one that looks good. There are too many different brands to even try to nail one down.
And when the paint is all done, I seal it with some Testor's Dullcote. I don't have any on hand now, so it isn't in the photo.

Re: tk7602's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
That is a great tutorial, Brian! Your MR cast, I think it looks incredible.
-
Re: tk7602's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Nice one Brian, I think your 100% right that people should use what colour they like, for my FPH I used mostly Rogue Studios colours with a few of my own selections thrown in, great thread which will no doubt help a lot of people :thumbsup
-
Re: tk7602's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Great job Brian. I know this will help tons of people because there isn't all that much listed out there for ROTJ in a rattlecan.
-
Re: tk7602's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Wow, this is really helpful. I may have to buy another mystery helmet to play with now.
-
Re: tk7602's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
That is a thing of absolute beauty!
-
Re: tk7602's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
i accidentally bought gloss hunter green, do you think would suffice or should i return it for non-gloss?
-
Re: tk7602's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
as long as you are putting the matte clear coat on it, it won't matter much at all.
-
Re: tk7602's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
oh, okay thanks. and did you use hunter green for the main color for hte dome and cheeks?

Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
would it be taboo to do a ESB style paint job with ROTJ colors for a ROTJ mr. fett??
the reason i ask, the ROTJ helmet does not hve the detail of the ESB one. and i am doing a ROTJ fett.
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
That helmet looks great with the can paints. Think ill be having a go myself once i find the same colours over here in the UK. Good work!!!

you can do what you want... it's your helmet :)
i wouldn't... the esb and rotj paint jobs are completely different, both colors and styles of weathering. so to me, it's one or the other.

Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Is there any one hardware store like Osh or home depot or Do It Center where you can get all of the paints?
Or would I have to visit several places to acquire all of the colors?

your guess is as good as mine :)
home depot used to have it all, but out here at least they switched to krylon.
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
I was able to find all of those colors at my closest Home Depot, all the ones I go to are still Rust-Oleum.
And while I'm in here thanks a bunch for posting both of your comprehensive spray can paint lists!
They came in enormously helpful and I'm looking forward to using the colors again when I build my next non rushed-Halloween armor set.

Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
You could buy those paints at almost all hardware stores for prices varing anywhere from $20 to $70, depending on the store and brand of colors.
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
I love the helmet by the way :)
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
This is awesome, thanks for the time and effort man!!

Thanks for the weathering tips. Mine still looks like new.

it's really surprising how well it works!
and since this reply reminded me... while my local home depot, true value and lowes stores ALL stopped selling rustoleum paints, AC Moore had a full selection of them, including all of the colors i named here and in the armor thread.
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
I found all the colours yesterday at a (Canadian) Home Depot; they had the full rustoleum line. The only thing I couldn' get was the dull-coat, but I found a satin finish clear sealant, so I'll give that a test. Still waiting for my DP 96 in the mail, but I'll be practising on cardboard in the meantime!

What color did you use on the shoulders???

that's in the armor colors thread, in the armor section :)

Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Instead of dullcote I am using a Flat finish clear coat I found at Lowes. Does anyone think this will be an issue. I am working on my first scratch build. Thx
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
looking to get started painting my first helmet. this looks like a good reference point for spraycans. what colors did you go by with upper cheeks. is that just flat black?
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
The upper cheeks are black on ESB, but on RotJ they are a blue-green color. I do thin layers of dark blue and green until I'm happy with it.
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Hey Stormtrooperguy...thanks for the info. Its great, and the helmet is awesome. Do you have similar information for the ROTJ Jet-pack. I will be starting mine soon? I'll send you a PM too in case you aren't checking this thread anymore...Thanks in advance
Mike

Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
This is great information. Definitely another great resource for beginning my ROTJ Fett helmet. Does anyone know if it really matters if I install the visor first, then paint the bucket? As long as I tape it off, it shouldn't ruin anything, correct?

So long as you do a good job of taping it off, it shouldn't matter. It's just easier with the visor not in the way.
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
That's what I assumed, but as I plan out the start of repainting the helmet I own, I wanted to see what others thought since they already have experience painting such great looking buckets. Thanks Webchief.
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Also, does anyone have any recommendations for people that do painting for people. For example, I have a Rubies Fett helmet, and was wondering what it would cost to have someone paint it in the ROTJ paint scheme, and how long something like that would take?

Do you have any pics of the fruit of your labor? I'd love to see how it turned out.

Yeah, man. That'd be great. I've got a helmet that I plan on painting from this tutorial myself. I'm definitely interested in seeing how yours turned out.

Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Can someone explain misting. I get spraying from about 4 feet away with black to weather or make look dirty but I don't understand the part in the first post about misting with the two different colors. Is it the same as the weathering misting???
Thanks so much for the rattle can info. I'm just not happy with the colors on my Boba
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Wow! Nice job mate!
If my helmet looks half this good, I'll be happy!
Your totally right about the colour idea, even if I like bobas green, there is heaps of colours to choose from!

i spray very fine layers of 2-3 colors on top of each other while the paint is still wet. sometimes i'll even have one can in each hand and spray them into each other.
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Great thread, it'll definitely help me on my "build as cheap as I can" helmet. I have a set of Iwata airbrushes but am never against the use of spray cans.
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
I piked up almost every color listed here at home depot yesterday and spent about 25 bucks. I already had metallic silver and primer handy. Thanks so much for posting this. Now if I can get some really good headshots so I know what to mask off, I will be doing great!
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
there are thousands of reference shots in the gallery here. i can't imagine anyone needing more than that :)
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
guess I have to dig a little better. Most of what I saw were full costumes, not close ups
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
OHHHHH, there are OTHER albums!
Problem solved :)
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
bout to give this a try as my armor jetpack and gaunts are done and I have left over huntclub and moss green, claret whine, flat black primer silver and blue I think Im gonna spend some more time soaking in paint fumes this week...this might rival the jetpack in difficulty

The helmet is worse than the jetpack to paint ;)
Wear a good respirator though! IMO you shouldn't be able to smell paint when you are working! $50 is worth it to save your lungs and brain a bit!

Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Been searching high and low for Rusto Sage Satin, and having no luck. Some research online seems to indicate that the color is being discontinued. Amazon has a few cans left for an outrageous price. I ordered one, but going forward, I was wondering if there is an equivalent color of a different brand. Thx!
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
it's always been pretty hard to find. i bought a case of it online a while back for around $50.
that's why i tend to do when i find a color i like... i'll get a dozen cans so that i have enough to go around if it becomes scarce :)
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
So far I've been able to find it in gloss at A.C. Moore, and that's it for brick & mortar stores. None at Lowes, Home Depot or Jo-Ann Fabrics (which has a surprisingly good spray paint selection...who knew?)
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
gloss or satin... either way you'll want to put a flat clearcoat on it.
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Nice! I never really favoured the ROTJ myself as I love the 'eyebrow scratch' on the ESB but I really like what you've done with this. Thanks for the list as I'm not too bad with a rattlecan!
Cheers,
W B)

Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
To be honest mate, i think the colours are damm near perfect!!
Brilliant job!

Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Just bought all these cans from Home Depot and they still carry all the same colors with new updated cans. I had no problems finding the safe green either and was tempted to buy a few extra cans in case anyone needed some here.
Here are the new cans if anyone is interested in what they look like 4 years after this post started! :)

Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
There is a satin sage green...it may not be in the painters touch version which has a different cap ( the sprayer) but there is a satin version...normally found at walmart. Gloss will be glossy...not something you want on the Fett.

I am doing a color test on the lid and the gloss does stand out more than I wuld like. I plan to hit it with the dullcoat that was mentioned by stormtrooperguy to see if that dulls it down to a matte.
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
dullcote will kill the shine on gloss paint just fine :)
it's cool that things have come back around. for a while home depot was switching to krylon and this was all going to be useless. but now rustoleum is back!
one note though: you got hunter green, not hunt club green. different color entirely!
-
Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj helmet rattlecan colors
Nice catch, I will have to double check to see if they have it. The paint girl was asking me 20 questions a out why I was picking out so many cans. I think when she saw me grab th metallic first, she assumed I was going to be doing a paint huffing marathon or something.

I looked for "Hunt Club Green" and I couldn't find it, then I came back to this thread and noticed it does actually say "Hunter Green" in your post.
Do you have a cap top picture so I can try an match to a similar color.
By the way, I picked up the dullcote and here is a pic for anyone interested...

Hunter green for the rear panels is correct...Hunt Club is for the armor...STG is getting old.
