And So It Begins ........**UPDATED PIC ** 2-10-03
Here we go again ..... painter's HELL!! Here is one of those awesome ESB "Movie Accurate Buckets" that's all the rage :D
I started the paintjob on Saturday, and it's about 35% completed.
Here are a couple of pics in two different lighting conditions. As usual, bad camera :lol
By the time this puppy is done, I should have received a really nice camera for Christmas (at least I hope) :lol

Re: And So It Begins ........
Looks very nice, airbrush or spray paint?
-
Re: And So It Begins ........
****... Looken good man, looking good! Started that on Saturday and it already looks like that? You ever find time to sleep man??? ;)
-
Re: And So It Begins ........
I don't think he needs to sleep, he's a machine! Looks great FP!
-
Re: And So It Begins ........
Quite simply ... incredible !!!
-
Re: And So It Begins ........
35% done 'eh? Man, that already looks better than 90% of the 100% done helmets I've seen! :) You are one gifted fella.
Mine's still in the box :lol I'm lacking a decent workspace at the moment but hope to chip away at it slowly.
-
Re: And So It Begins ........
Yeah man, you disgust me ;)
Mine's still sitting in the box next to my new gauntlets, which totally rock, and waiting until everything dies down from the holiday excitement. I can't wait to get started on them.
Have you posted a tutorial for your painting technique? When I saw it up close at SDCC it looked awesome and complex, but at the same time very technically applied. I'm hoping that you can give me an insight into how you do it so, apparently, easily. Mine always look so impressionistic and vague. Yours are crisp and look truly chipped/weathered.
Great helmet, Chris,
If anyone can give this awesome helmet the paintjob it deserves, it's you :)

Re: And So It Begins ........
Lookin' good bud.
What method are you using to apply the damage? Are you going metal colour then layering the other paints on, or doing a base coat and applying the damage topically?
If my new gauntlets don't show up today, I'll start painting my bucket! :)

Re: And So It Begins ........
Strong work. Looks better than my DP 96 and its 100% painted. I second the tutorial on your painting technique!!!
Ill be breaking into the my movie bucket after the first of the year.

Re: And So It Begins ........
That look awsome. What colors did you use?
-
Re: And So It Begins ........
Looks fantastic, post pictures of the end result please.
-
Re: And So It Begins ........
Awesome! :0 I agree with everyone else we need a tutorial and together we will rule the costuming galaxy.
-
Re: And So It Begins ........
Wow! Very nice I must know the colors and the weathering method! How is that only 35%??? What else are you gonna add?
-
Re: And So It Begins ........
You know, I don't know how anyone else here feels but, I think it just looks bad on the board in general when someone is so embarrassed by their work that they have to show the original screen used prop and try to claim it as their own!
It's a sad day.
:D
-
Re: And So It Begins ........
You're still working on yours!! Dude, I finished my new dome DAYS ago! :lol
-
Re: And So It Begins ........
that looks fantastic!!!!!!....did u use cans or airbrush?...any tips for buckets in progress???
-
Re: And So It Begins ........
So, now I see what I should aspire to. That is a beautiful job. I'm sure mine will look like a booger with a visor in it when compared.
-
Re: And So It Begins ........
Woooooooof !
Sorry I didn't get a chance to respond to this sooner, I was out today because my Mom had a Day Surgery. Everything went well though.
Thanks everyone for the kind words :)
Appolo_50 - Thank you. The base colors are all sprays (custom by Sherwin Williams). I had mixed the paint with testors enamels originally, and then took it down and had them matched.
Well Paid Killer - You know good and well that I don't :lol
Mirax H - A machine ? Wow, I kinda like the sound of that. Seriously though, since this whole project started almost a year ago (8.5 Months), it seems that I have become more machine than man, twisted and evil :lol :lol Thanks Mirax
Del Fargazer - Thanks !
MaxPlague - Looks like you gotta lot to do buddy, the those gauntlets and helmet and all, better get crackin :D
journeymanprotector - Too kind man. But thanks :) As far as a tutorial goes, I've been asked before, and it's still not a real easy thing to do, because I wing it most of the time. No two buckets alike and all. I just use plenty of Ref CD Pics and lots of teeny weenie brushes, and real tired eyes, with many headaches :lol I use a combination of custom mixed enamels, and custom mixed acrylics for the weathering and damage topically. I dry brush most of the weathering colors, and use whitewash, to mute/brighten colors. I cut small low tack masking tape strips to mask off areas when possible to get crisp when warranted. The main ingredient, is actually Scitch Bright Pads. After I detail a section of the helmet, I use a scotch bright pad lightly over the mettalic and layered grayish areas, and it actually brings everything together while actually wearing away the edges of surrounding colors exposing a more natural random effect. Probably sounds crazy I know :lol Perhaps after I finish, I can make the time to type one up with some pics.
Ego - Thanks Jer :) See my response to JMP above :lol
death to windu - Thanks Bud !
SEEKER - :lol No way man, not even Thanks Buddy :)
secol_FETT - Thanks Man !
DL44 Blaster - Thanks Buddy :D

tteF aboB - Too kind as well :) Thank you. I put a bit of info in my response to JMP above about a tutorial.
tk0000 - Thanks bud :) I posted some info about the colors to Apollo_50 at the top of this reply.
Defiler - Thanks ! Will keep progress posted.

crisisfilms - Thanks Buddy :) Okee, Okee, I posted some info in my reply to JMP above .... I will put more info up in the future, I promise :lol

Re: And So It Begins ........
It's been a little while, been busy. But here is a pic of the above nearly complete bucket that I've painted for Bobafettish. I will post a few finals at different angles when its finished this weekend. Or the new owner can do it, if he approves that is ;)
http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/pu...sp?id_=1512879
And, here are two WIP pics of "MY OWN" bucket I just started a while back.
The first pic is of course it's current natural look, the second pic, I superimposed the "Signature Dent" from the real Fett bucket on top of mine for reference.
It still has alot of work to go, it's in a very raw state. But you can get the idea. I've actually made some majoe mods to this bucket that I will get into at a later date, and will be very apparent when you see it. Not to mention that there is a bunch of stuff inside the bucket that I can take pics of later.

Re: And So It Begins ........**UPDATE** 2-5-03
FP, look at what you have done. You have BF quoting from the dictionary, and Seeker joining team Boba. End of times? I think not. Just a kick-*** ESB helmet. You've done outstanding work on what I believe is one of the hardest props/helmets to paint accurately.
I'm in love with the job you did on that upward pointing area of damage on Fett's right temple area. It's one of the most intricate designs on the helmet, and a personal fav, and it looks spot on!
-
Re: And So It Begins ........**UPDATE** 2-5-03
BOOYAH!! Good Job! :cheers You must let us know your technique. It looks fantastic!

Sorry it took so long to get back to this thread. SOme of you may notice (or not) that I'm logged in probably most of the time, but it doesn't actually mean I'm there. I just keep it logged in :doh
Ego - I'm still around, probably always will :D Thanks bud.
Bountys Hunted - Thanks buddy ;)
Well Paid Killer - :lol
tteF aboB - :o
MegalomaniacalMandalore -Thanks man :)
C17LM - ;)
Tim Allen - :)
Dean O - Ain't dat da truth !! :lol Thanks bud!
TK-Fett - Nah! There will always be something to do, we'll never truly be happy, until we get the real thing :D
Bobafettish - Thanks buddy :o I'm glad ya like. Keep in mind tho, it's just paint, when you see it in person, you may be dissappointed :doh :lol
TK-Fett- If you get me INSIDE the archives, I might consider it :lol
natty15d - Thanks my friend :D I hope that will happen sometime REAL soon. I'm itching myself.
STEVE THE SWEDE - Thanks Steve :) I never got the chance to welcome ya to TDH ... Welcome aboard !
SEEKER - :lol :lol Thanks bud ! Awe shucks, ya know me, I'm like that bad penny you keep hearing about, I always turn up eventually :) Did I ever send you that darn Dart ? My brain not soooo good lately? Glad to hear yer gonna do a Boba !! You got it made man, now that we knowwhat Jango looks like, and that Boba is a clone, you'll look just like him too !! I think it's a cool idea man !
malcfett - Sweet !!! Another convert ;)
secol_FETT - :lol Thanks :) Actually I did take some progress pics this time, not many tho. It was kinda hard because I kept repainting the base colors, trying to get them right. I even had alot of the detail painted at one point, and decided to strip it and do it over. I probably did that 4 or 5 times :lol I'll dig up some of the better ones for ya.
tylerdurden - :lol Thanks a million man :D
BOBA PHAT - Thanks bud :) Technique ? Well, I don't believe in using the torn sponge method, I personally can't get them to work. I just use teeny weeny brushes, and strain the hell out of my eyes looking at pictures of different angles while I work it. Placement of the scratches is the real trick I suppose, getting them in place and proper relation to the shapes and angles of the helmet. That's probably why these look a little better than my last one that was a deluxe cast, being that it was a different shape in every possible way, as a paint palette, it just didn't do the scratches and scars justice, because the scars had to be disproportioned to fit on the areas of the misshapen bucket. Now that these Movie Size buckets are available, I think it help tremendously in the final outcome. That's at least one of my theories. Perhaps it's all in the practice. After all this is my 5th helmet now :doh
Well Paid Killer - Look at you !!! We'll now dub you ....
"The Recruiter" !
Ya gotta watch out for this guy people :D
Thank again to everyone !

Re: And So It Begins ........**UPDATE** 2-5-03
Brushes are the way to go! What kind of paint is it? When I use spray paint and apply with a brush, I waste a lot of paint. I like the results that model paints give, but I have to blot and smear a lot to keep the paint thin, even when I wring out my brush. That makes it rather hard to follow the weathering patterns.
-
Re: And So It Begins ........**UPDATE** 2-5-03
Fp, Lee and I were just discussing the very same thing a couple days ago. Placement in relation to the size and accuracy of the helmet is as important as having the right colors and shapes. Everything will just line up better if you have a helmet that is proportional and close to the correct size. So cheer for the "MSH" maker is also in order. Though, a whole freaking lot of talent and eye squinting helps too, I suppose. ;)

Re: And So It Begins ........**UPDATE** 2-5-03
Thanks for your welcome!:)
I was wondering, did you use water based acrylics or enamels for the grey and purple/grey paint chips? I never really liked the result of acrylics when using this weathering technique. Even if they are watered out they seem to dry with an uneven surface, at least the ones I'm using.
If you have any pointers on this subject I would love to hear it!:)
Steve.
-
Re: And So It Begins ........**UPDATE** 2-5-03
Wow! FP, you know you've done something special when you've got Seeker convinced to do a Boba!!!!
:D
-
Re: And So It Begins ........**UPDATE** 2-7-03
BOBA PHAT - The base green is a custom green that I mixed a small batch of sometime ago, and took it to Sherwin Williams to get it matched for future instances. All the weathering in done with Testors Enamels. The silver is actually a specific Krylon Silver. The only one I have found that will take Dull Coat without turning LEAD color. Otherwise, the rest of the colors are all custom mixed Testors. Unfortunately, nothing straight out of the bottle.
tylerdurden - :lol Yep, Yep....A definite :cheers to the maker of these buckets. Without him, we'd still be suffering from "DPTOXIMIA" :lol
STEVE THE SWEDE - Steve, I used all enamels on my own bucket this time. It's a first for me. I usually use acryl for at least some of it, but this time, I decided to experiment. It's the only way to go as far as I'm concerned. It's a much more durable, as acryl tends to dry like an extremely hard rubber, that can chip right off in some cases if it's applied too thick, and yes, very uneven. But no matter what, don't forget the secret ingredient ....... (see below)
Bountys Hunted - Awe, he's been a Boba at heart the whole time, he's just in denial :D After all, he knows that Boba, is truly what started this craze in the first place ;)
The colors I used are:
Base Green (Dome and Cheeks)- Sherwin Williams Product # F77V100 Color KFC 10257 Green
Mandibles - Base of Ruddy brown, with a LIGHT airbrushed enamel misting of Testors DK. Red , then lightly weather with a dark wash (I used charcoal gray) and then a VERY LIGHT toothbrush misting of white wash (to get that speckled effect here and there seen on the exhibit pics. The pics above show the red mandible area a little darker than the original, but it's also lighting. It does some seriously strange things in different lights, all of which appear close to correct to me.
Inside Cheeks - Krylon Ultra Flat Black with an ULTRA LIGHT misting of Krylon Camouflage Series DK Brown (it's actually a real grimy dark brown almost black color that Softens the pitch black of the ultra. With a combo of the two, it looks real nice up close and personal. And a VERY LIGHT toothbrush misting of the white wash spatters again.
Grays - Various, as will the real Helmet. Mostly custom mixed for brightness and contrast. This is where the eyes and good computer monitor come in :D But one can get most any of the grays with a combination of Flat black, Flat White, and a little bit of Sea Blue.
The Dk Red outlines on the mandibles - some call it purple, wine, plum - I simply used a combo of Dk. Red, Sea Blue, Black, and White.
Rear Green/Blue of the helmet - I fudged this tremendously. I will have to look at the paints again to jog my memory on this one (sorry)
Silver - Krylon Metallic Spray paint - Silver. This is a different series of Krylon as well. It comes in a Bluish Green can with a white Diamond on the front with SILVER in big letters in the middle of the diamond. I got it at K-mart. It can be brushed, but one must spray some into a container or the cap, and let the puddle start to dry for a little while so that it thickens up a bit. This is absolutely the only metallic paint I have found that can be sealed with Dull Coat without turning Lead Color. It keeps the silver appearance, but dulls just enough not to be obnoxious, making it appear to be used metal, not bright and shiny new :D
And, the SECRET INGREDIENT ...... (Shhhhhh, don't tell anyone)
http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/pu...sp?id_=1525768
You see that little pad he's using ? It a Scotchbrite :D I can't stress enough, to smooth out the layers of detail, you gotta use it. Don't be afraid of it. It's a beautiful thing. Blend, Blend, Blend.
Keep in mind, as with any paint list, it's simply a guideline. The results will vary depending on the artist. I used many different techniques, some of which I do not remember in the various stages, because they happen on the fly, and could never be replicated again. That's why no matter who paints a helmet, there will always bee subtle differences from bucket to bucket.
ALTHOUGH, if I were anyone else here, I would hold out for just a little while longer. The world will be a MUCH better place once Lee (C17LM - Aurora) releases his paint codes. There is MUCH TO BE DESIRED in a paint code list that's right out of the bottle, right off the shelf, that one need not custom mix :D Lee and I have worked closely, and out of respect for his hard work and many, many hours of research, I have chosen to take the custom route again with my own helmet, until he is ready to reveal his findings. But I will reiterate myself, results will vary. Just because there will be a definitive paint list, does not in any way downplay or take away from the talents of an Artisan like Lee. His colors will be an accurate base to start from, where one chooses to go from there, is up to the individual.
I hope this helps some.

Awesome work Chris, seriously cool. I knew you'd do this helmet justice.
How's the rest of the suit coming along?
Are you coming to comic-con again?
Take care,

Re: And So It Begins ........**UPDATE** 2-7-03
Don't worry FP . . your secrets are safe with us! :)
Let me say thank you for all the great info you just gave the board . . . definitely what the spirit of TDH is all about--makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside! :lol
You probably needed to practice your typing skills anyway right? :p
I do have one more question for you, which, may be stupid but . . . with the secret scotchbrite ingredient . . how soon after painting to you use it? How much pressure do you put on as well. Just curious as I don't have all that much scrap that I can test this stuff on so . . definitely interested in your thoughts.
Thanks again,
Jer

Re: And So It Begins ........**UPDATE** 2-7-03
Thanks a lot, very informative!
Next question!:lol What is scotchbright? (I'm in Sweden) is it some kind of steel wool? I used a kind of plastic wool to even out the paints on my ROTJ bucket, worked pretty good.
Steve.

Thanks for all of your hard work and great advise! :cheers

Re: And So It Begins ........**UPDATED PIC ** 2-9-03
journeymanprotector - Thanks man ;) All else is coming along ok I suppose. Between the painting, and the gauntlets/armor, I havn't had alot of time for much else. But I should be able to get into at least a partial costume pic in a couple of weeks with the Ver. 2.0 suit.
Ego - All great questions ... I'm sorry I didn't think to add them. I would wait 48 hours before lightly buffing with the pad between layers. Do the helmet in quadrants. Do all the purple/burgandy/plum stuff, then after a couple of days, do the grays, then after a couple of days, the silvers, ect. (as an example).
STEVE THE SWEDE - Steve, not a stupid question at all. And actually I should have been more specific. There are the sanding pads, and then there are the scouring pads. The ones I used are the LIGHT scouring pad type, not the sanding sponges. 3M makes them, I just get them at my local variety/hardware store.
Defiler - Thanks !
micke - Thanks Micke, but you're too kind. To coin a phrase, "There's always a bigger fish" :D
You're a fine artist yourself, you'll do yours justice I'm sure ;)
BobaFettish - Nooooooooooo ! Not the sponges :lol Seriously, not the sponge type. The scouring pads ;) ****, I hope nobody tried the sanding pads yet :doh
BOBA PHAT - You betcha man ! I apologize for not being more of a help earlier on in my stay here with TDH. I've just been soo !#@!$# busy, I can't usually see straight :lol
Here's a newer progress pic. The lighting cannot be replicated of course, wich covers alot of the detail on the original, that appears on mine. But it's there. I swear, I have sprung eyes to prove it. Unfortunately I can't put my eyes in a sling :( But, If I don't get a life soon, I know what will be :lol
I still have the "Dent" quadrant to do, and I have to fix the trajectory of the white scratch underneath the dent, but otherwise, it's getting there.
Oh, BTW - here's when you might start noticing some of the modifications I have made to the shape of the bucket ....there are quite a few, and will be more evident after I post pics at different angles. I will go into a little bit more as to what these mods are, and why I've made them in the future.

Yep, it looks a bit thick, don't it ;) Awe shucks, I'm not that anal about it :lol
:lol!
All I can say is if Jango had all these darn scratches and colors I'd just say screw it! I'm making my own scratches. Once again, I am so amazed at how close to the real thing this looks. Truly awesome!

You have all made me very proud, all of you new warriors of Boba Fett painting perfection!
I will leave the mantle for Fett to you guys now, as you've definately earned it with all of your hard work and research.
Currently, I'm working on a new project, something that in the past has had only moderate attention given to it:
Screen accurate USCM Colonial Marine Armor. (it's something different for me, at least) :)
Pics soon...

The only helmets I see posted in this thread are Fettprides... And to be honest its hard to lump his work in with the
rest of ours!! Quite frankly we are all awaiting our syllabus to start the Fettpride painting workshop 101!!

Oh no!! Another interest!! I could get sucked into that outfit too! And might as well throw in a Starship Troopers outfit!! I've got custom 1/6th versions of both...
:D
Good to hear you've still got your hands involved in film props!

Well, just when I thought that my 3rd (or was it 4th) completion of my Boba was finished, I gotta turn around and re-build with FP items. Although, as much as you guys may hate me for it, I'm still keeping my DP deluxe.
Now if Chris would only work on a perfect jet pack!! :) Although, I'm sure he's already thought of it... ;)
