Scratch built bucket. Off to the drawing board.

    Hello all!
I must say, you are a bunch of very creative people. The amount of information I've gathered here in a week, far surpassed my expectations. I joined the forum to find out which Fett helmet to purchase, and after reading (yes used the search option as well, lol) I've decided to construct my own bucket. I have accurate measurements on all aspects of the helmet (decided to use the mystery helmet) except for the "backing plates" behind each of the ears and the depth of the front "teeth". I am already well on the way in construction and will post pics when I get my camera back from the shop. As far as the materials are concerned, I've found it's best to keep with one medium and styrene seems to be working beautifully. I am very anxious for some feedback....when ever that camera repairman gets off his but.
    Again, you folks are awesome.

yeah so the project is on going. I can't seem to figure out how to post pics in here (yeah sometimes I'm an idiot) so heres a link to a pic I have of whats going on now. The paint on the helmet is me getting bored with doing the technical stuff....it'll be sanded off and done once the bucket is done. I know the resolution is horrible but do you all think the mandibles look the right width, curve etc?? I dont know......haven't decided. input greatly appreciated.
    thanks.

Thanks man. Yeah the dome was a blast (sarcasm)
Now that I have this thing mostly completed, I've noticed that the bucket is farrrrrr from perfect. I think the cheeks aren't sunken enough, the mandibles are a little too narrow under the eyeslit, and the "ear bases?" may be a little far to the rear. Oh well. I think I'll be able to hide these discrepencies with a good paint job. Guess we'll see. Perfect or not, I built it outa the plastic you line your shower with, and some bondo. lol.

    Thanks again.

Initially I was going to buy sheet styrene, but I was doing a demolition on a house and when I was ripping apart the bathroom I noticed the shower had been lined with.....yeah 3 1/2 by 6 foot sheets of styrene. Thought it was weird. But hey if it's for free, it's for me. Honestly, besides the six dollar can of bondo, I haven't spent a dime. I'll post some more pics tonight of the keyslot area and the dent.

Well, the plastic is about 3-4 mm thick. With the curves and the epoxy all put together....i would say very strong. The Dome has a skeleton if you will, of this same plastic cut into thin strips, glued from the inside of the bucket..then about a 1/4 inch of bondo. I thought it would be heavier, but compared to my old kevlar, it's like nothing.

that's promissing, did you heat up the plastic before you bent it?

and what did you use to fill in the gaps in the dome, in between the strips?

    - Thanks.

Re: Scratch built bucket. color question.

I decided to take a break from the fabrication process and paint. I'll do the ear pieces later. Anyhow, I washed the bucket with the accryllic black wash prior to doing all this and I think I may have to do it again to tone everything down, But I'm not sure. Once again, a terrible pic....suggestions on the tones greatly appreciated.

Thanks man, appreciate it. I still have a lot of paint to put on it, and the ears of course, Maybe I'm being a little picky on the color but i think it's real important to get this part right.

Re: Scratch built bucket. Off to the drawing board

Well, after all that work it seems my design has a fatal flaw with the dome construction. The layer of Bondo over the styrene skeleton just isn't going to cut the mustard. While installing the RF ear piece I noticed a small crack that will inherantly become a big crack and so on and so forth. Im going to start over again with a hard version and cast it. I'm still in the research stages and this seems to be the best route for a durable bucket that's wearable. I wasn't entirely satisfied with some of the dimensions anyways so ....off to work I go.
I think I'll give the one I made to the lady and she can make a nice planter out of it for the garden. lol.

well sorry to hear bout the flaw, but people learn from their mistakes, and besides practice makes perfect. just keep going and you'll have a helmet that has extrodinary powers, powers my friend that people are willing to give their lives for. just kidding was kinda out of the loop there, any way awsome helmet. it is truley remarkable i'll be sure if i make a helmet i'll use your pictures for reference.

Actually, I gave this one to a friend........he liked it and the more I looked at it, the more I began to dislike it. I've been working on a second one for some time and it should be done within the week. I didn't want to keep posting the same ole' pics over and over again as the construction is so similar, but this second attempt is really alot better. When it's done I'll throw up some images. Thank you for the compliments though........I've learned that taking your time is soooooo very important.

Ripped my shower off the wall to see if I had any Styrene behind it. None durn it! Anyone know of any tutorials for building a helmet out of 6 inch ceramic tiles?

EDIT: They're white; maybe I could do a pre-production Fett?
