    Satin finish on ESB helmet?

    Howdy folks-

I'm in the middle of my helmet paint-up, and as I'm bouncing through the AOSW images, its looking to me like there's a slight satin finish on the helmet. I thought originally it might be a result of shooting the costume from behind glass but the specularity of it indicate some shine to the helmet.

This may have been discussed to death, but only came across one thread that touched upon it. Any thoughts? Right now, some of the paint on my lid looks dead flat and feels less than exact (and realistic!) when compared to the various reference images.

    Thanks in advance!

Yeah It looked like a satin finish to me too, I found it livened up the colours a bit when applied...

Ah cool! That may help it even further -- unfortunately, the dullness of the flat finish makes everything feel a bit two-dimensional. I may mask off a small section (bottom of earcap or such) for a test first. TF, did you use a Humbrol coat or something more generic (of the spray can variety)?

I used Humbrol satin coat, thinned with white spirit, don't use thinners. Thinned so it's quite watery.

I also definately feel there is a slight satin sheen on both the ESB and ROTJ lids when you look at the ref pics. On my ESB lid, as im not trooping in it, I found my finish to be pretty crisp anyway, so didnt bother with the clear satin coat. Will see how I go once I complete my ROTJ, but you're definately correct in thinking there is a satin finish :-)

I agree about the slight sheen. I haven't found anything yet that I like as far as
clear coats that is just satin-y enough without edging too far into the semi-gloss range.

I've used Krylon matte finish on other prop projects, and it has a slight sheen, but the
can I have is just about dead and I think they may have changed their formula.
Haven't picked any up recently so I can't say for sure.

If you're interested in testing it out, it's product #7120 "Low Odor Matt."
Like I said, I bought it quite a while ago and I don't know if they make that
    exact one any more.

The other method of achieving a slight sheen would be to buff the surface with 0000 wire wool. This would be done before any mist weathering coats however so some of the effect would be lost once these were applied.

Thanks, guys. I have the steel wool, so I can try that first. Still, I'll look up the Krylon satin finish as well (Humbrol satin isn't as easy to come by here in the States).

I used flat but after I finished and used some black carbon pigment on it I sealed it all with a satin clear coat to add a little shine.
