Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
Well Pete (Lexuasnyny) approached me to do a repaint on his Rubies helmet that he received as part of the Deluxe costume that he recently purchased. When he first sent me pictures of the lid I was shocked that something like that was allowed to be sold. I mean it looks like someone took a paint brush and took a few swipes at it. He did not want a complete repaint so I told him that to me the most important part to Fetts lid is the the front. So we agreed on me repainting the mandibles, Dome dent, cat scratch and replacing the visor, which will be a task.
I was able to get some primer on it this weekend and plan on laying down the bright silver coat tonight so I can then start masking out the damage and move on to the next color. Below you will see pics of the mandibles before and after the primer was put down.

Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
my god ... what a ****** paintwork there was! Unbelievable! The shape of the helmet looks pretty decent to me so I am curious what you will make of it!
It will be a great helmet afterwards!
IŽll keep an eye on this one bro! :-)

Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
Yeah I was amazed to see the paint job myself the fact the LFL and Rubies thought something like that was O.K.
Well I was able to put down the bright silver layer last night so when I get home from work tonight I will start masking out the silver damage so I can lay down the gray either tonight or tomorrow.

Well got some work work done on this. Re-masked out all of the previous damage as well as the new and put down a coat of PPR Maroon. Now to re-mask everything again and PPR Maroon damage and put down the final color of Caboose and then that should do it for the mandibles.

Got the caboose put down last night and the front mandibles are done, I will have to paint the rest of the ribon around the helmet so that the colors match as their color is off. At this point now I will move onto the front dome section and fix the dent and the cat scratch as their atempt is just plain sad:cry.

Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
long over due update, I got the gray layer put down last night and should have the necessary damage masked out by tonight so I can put down the green layer and just add the kill stripes. Once that is done I will be replacing the visor and hopefully getting this shipped back to lex by the end of the week.

Alright got the kill stripes done last night and removed all the masking fluid today. All that is left on this bad boy is a wash and a few little touch-ups before hitting it with a dulcoat to seal it up. I will also be installing a new visor on this which should be done by Friday. Any way on to the pics and the first one is the helmet as it originally came.

Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
Alright got some more work done on this. I was able to get the upper and lower cheeks done as well as getting the two back panels done as well. That will leave me with the key slots and the trim on the back section of the bucket to finish up by this weekend so i ca work on ripping out the old t-visor and replacing it with a new one.

Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
If you hadn't said anything, it'd be near impossible to tell it started it's life as a Rubies bucket. Great work!
-
Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
I am really enjoying this go from, "MOMMY, MAKE THE BAD MAN STOP!" to "This was a Rubies????" to "Nice Job!"
Good work!

Thanks for the kind words guys!!!

Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
I WISH I had the patience to paint the buckets the way you guys do. Freakin' sick, man. Just sick. I stare at my BobaMaker helmet all of the time in awe of the details on that thing, and how you guys make it look SO easy. I can paint, I've been painting Warhammer models with some wicked detail for over 20 years, but the pure accuracy that you guys put out REGULARLY and CONSISTANTLY on these helmets just blows my noggin.

Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
Rob,
Just wanted to let you know I received the helmet on the 28th and it is stunning. I am taking a airbrush class tomorrow just because I want to learn the craft.
Thank again for everything and hopefully we will do more business in the future..
Pete

Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
That looks awesome, I plan on doing the same thing to my Rubies helmet, need some practice for when my BM bucket arrives in 14 to 16 weeks. Did you use stencils at all when masking the damage?
-
Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
The difference is night and day. Great job on the paint-up. I'm surprised even rubies can sell garbage painted like that at any price.
-
Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
I dunno, I kinda liked the sunflower dent j/k LOL! Looks great
-
Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
When I got the thing It looked like a 8 year old with ADD painted it with one finger, at least I know that my novice painting skills will look better than the **** rubies puts out.
-
Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
Yeah when I first saw the pictures of it from Lex I was like there is no possible way that this is how they sell it. But low and behold it was just sad at least make some kind of attempt even if little to make it look some what right.
The paint job was completed by rescaling Count Dookies templates and using some of my own from that I have made from the reference photos.
Again thanks for the complements guys

Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
I hate Rubies. They have have really cheapened the sport and their advertised products are so much different that their shipped products. I learned that the hard way with a TK I bought a few years back. However... Deadband, you did an excellent salvage of that bucket. You would never know it's a Rubies and I think it looks great. You did an excellent job on the scratch, which for some readon has always been the hardest for me to get just right. Good job!
On a local note, it's hot in So Cal today. I'm in Riverside and it's already in the low 90's. What Murrieta like today?

No, a kid with ADD would have done a better job, trust me, (I have ADD)

Riverside good to see, well at the office right now in Temecula it is about 92 and hit 111 yesterday so I have a feeling it will much of the same. There are a few other guys here on the board that are in Temecula we should all get toghther smoe time and talk shop.

Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
Deadland what did you use to mask the damage, masking fluid, tape ?
-
Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
I use the winsor & newton masking fluid to mask out the damage.
-
Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
Which Rubies is this and how much did it cost? I might be interested in getting one and doing a repaint like this. I'm just looking for something that looks acceptable sitting on my shelf. I was thinking about getting a FP Budget helmet but this would probably be a cheaper route to go.
Great work BTW Deadland.
-
Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
I believe this is the helmet that comes with the Supreme Boba Fett costume. I don't believe that the helmet is available separately. The costume is about $500 or so. The FP budget may be the easier way to go in your case
-
Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
I fell for the same thing. Going through a process of repainting / replacing the Supreme Edition I bought. How did you change the visor!? I have purchased a new one from Daz (in the post) the Rubies one is almost transparent but looks like it won't come out too easy...
-
Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
I had to cut it out with a dremel and then cut a new visor that I purchased from the local welding shop and cut it to fit.
-
Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
Thanks Deadland - just starting out so appreciate the advice - Dremel will be my next purchase!
-
Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
This is amazing. I am considering buying the Rubies costume as a temp. costume. I need one by Halloween, then over time, hopefully before the 2012 3D releases, I can start replacing the parts with the higher quality fan made items I see everyday on here. But definitely going to attempt a weathering and repaint on the rubies costume before I will wear it for halloween. Maybe if I can lay some good work down I might be able to at least get my money back reselling it to someone just starting out like me, that is once I don't need it anymore.

Re: Rubies repaint for Lexusnyny by Deadland
This is an awesome job. I was also struck by how aweful and cheap the rubies costume was in general...espescially for the price. I am curious though....how does one go about ordering something from FP? I have been to their website and half of it appears to be in another language....possibly latin.
