    Mar 25, 2012, 5:12 AM - ROTJ visor colour and shade? #1

Morning Kiddies - just a real quick question as the search menu hasn't really been able to fully answer me here, but doing some very early research for the ROTJ hero lid with things like colour swatches, getting some dental files etc, and am just interested if anyone knows the exact shade of visor used for ROTJ.. I know ESB has a Green shade 3, but the Jedi lid appears much darker - im thinking shade 5, and from the pics, likely a smoke black, or possibly a green. Im leaning toward the black from reference pics, but do any of you Jedi Fett-lovers have any definitive evidence? Cheers in advance my fine friends

Colour is smoke black. I do not know the exact shade but for example the perspex 3mm smoke black (dark) is perfect. Just search for it on eBay to get a reference

Thanks a bunch for that Kaane. I have access to some great places around my area which sell all the visor shades (found them while looking for the ESB shade 3 green), so that isnt the issue, i'm just being my normal, pedantic self in nailing down the correct colour and shade. Many thanks brother, as stated, my first thought was indeed the smoke black, and eyeballing it, im thinking shade 5, but will take any opinions. peace

I'm not too convinced that the ESB Hero had originally a green T-visor, maybe it had a brown-like shade or smoke black (as KaanE mentioned), as the Pre-Pro #3 helmet:

Personally I think the ESB hero definately had a grey/smoked visor orgiginally as this picture pretty much settles it for me. The green one must be a later repair.

I second that opinion. IMO the green visor was later add, and it was originally smoked, but I might be wrong.

As always Raf, you speak the truth brother. I guess the biggest problem is the quality of the movie stills from back in the day - based on those photos, the surrounding light can do all sorts of crazy stuff, particularly with transparent materials. The one thing I can be pretty sure about, is a green shade 3 on the AOSW helmet. So thats pretty much with what I went with, as its gonna be really tough to prove a) if it was ever actually a differrent colour at all, b) what colour, if differrent, it was originally due to light etc (and while the PP#3 image helps, did they have the same visor, or were the visors done at a completely differrent time for each, and hence differrent completely); and c) Why would they change it for AOSW or even SE - Was it damaged etc. If it wasn't damaged, it would be interesting to why they would bother changing it - particularly in the AOSW pics, it looks quite handled, scratched and weathered rather than a fairly crisp piece. That may have been due to the filming of SE, but you would think by that time, and preserving it in the Lucasfilm archives, with a new visor, they would be far more aware of handling and preservation qualities of such an iconic helmet than in the 80's where it was an unknown entity... Of course, much of it may come down to hypotheticals, but as always Raf - great discussion, love it! Hope you're doing well brother!

A great pic, but again the grainy photography comes into question for me here too. As a test, where the killstripes start on the dome, you can see the green shade on the dome. however, cover that section up where the light shines off, and the dome appears grey - and thats something we know is definately green. Certainly not disagreeing with anybody here, just really enjoying the discussion and trying to look at it from from all angles. Peace my friends

Well, even though the colours may be a bit off in those old photographs, I think if it had been a green visor the tint would still be more green than the smoke/grey we see in that picture. Then again, I'm no expert on graphics and how colours transform. I'm just a computer guy who like to discuss things.

haha, nice mate, and you could well be right on it all. I know I just try not to jump to too much these days from old photos, as we can see how much colours and lighting can change with quality digital stills compared to the old days - particularly with a super bright background and very washed out colours compared to what we know actually appears - even simple things like the mandible red and dome and cheek green look completely differrent when compared to something like the high quality celebration 4 images. What I have done to illustrate, is put an untouched pic of my own lid which I know has a green shade 3 in. I put a pic of the interior where you can see through the visor, and it has a bright background. It is untouched, but with the bright white background, the visor barely looks green at all, if anything, more smokey, or even the browny hue Raf mentioned earlier. Pic 2 is the same pic with the contrast adjusted slightly to make it more in line with the graniness - in this one, the visor seems even more smokey.. its not a perfect example, but all interesting, and certainly all good brother - as after all, you are probably right anyway, as my eyes are getting old

When it comes to the accuracy of my own helmet, the visor tint is the least of my problems.

One day new evidence might come up to settle the issue. It's all good bro!

And I just had an Idea. Take a shade 3 green visor, and a grey visor of equal shade, and photograph them both in the same picture against a window or other bright light with black and white settings on the camera. Theoretically I think they should come out as different shades of grey. I'm thinking the smoked visor would let more light through be lighter shade - and that might give a clue to what is in the black and white reference pictures.
