Rotj Build Up

I have magnets now and hate them! I have Velcro for the shoulders and hate that too! I love the idea of the grommets, they are not that hard to put in and they guarantee the armor is not going anywhere! and yes they are screen accurate too!

Cool. Back when I made my costume, everyone used velcro or snaps because nobody really knew how the LFL armor was attached. I've been trooping with velcro for 14 years and haven't ever had a piece fall off during a troop. Been that way through 2 sets of armor, and now I just got a new vest and went right back to velcro again because I guess I figure all those bolts on the inside of your vest against your chest wouldn't feel that comfortable to be trooping with for hours on end.

Against the vest, I used that industrial sticky-back velcro, but then also backed that with Walther's Goo contact cement. Against the armor plate would be just the other half of the industrial velcro.

Thanks, i don't know, i am debating on what to do here. Velcro is alot easier and has room for adjustment i imagine, while the gromets have to be exact! Meditate on this i will, :)

OK so I have a few updates...
I purchased two things from ebay...
First was a set of resin cast shin tools. Now in the picture they looked a lot better than what i recieved. The paint job was terrible! I barely touched them and all the paint flaked off. Whoever painted them forgot to remove the mold release!! But i think i was able to save them with a quick repaint..

I also bout an EE-3 kit... I was really worried about this purchase, but the kit turned out to be half way decent. The nose cone is alittle long, and the aluminum handle connector is a bit small, but overall i am happy with it. Shipping on the other hand was a nightmare!! I paid for 2 day shipping, and this came over a month later, and on top of that, the seller just threw, resin pieces, into a box and slapped a fragile sticker on it. There was no bubble wrap or even newspaper, just resin pieces bouncing around. this pack job boggled my mind, i could not believe someone could do that. When it finally came to me the handle to the gun was snapped off, most of the fins were chipped and the stock greeblies were smashed. BUT with some glue, screws and some love I got this to a usable piece i think!

Quick update:
I got my jetpack greeblies in and painted. I have to install the ones on the bottom still and do some weathering with white paint, but I am one step closer to being done. any feedback is welcome!

edit: ok so after comparing mine to the reference, there are a few minor tweaks to be made.
first , there are only 4 screws holding the door on and they appear to be allen head not flat head. and they are painted blue.
next, the co-axial greeblie with the four bolts is HUGE!! I am going to make one to scale in cad and have it printed.
finally,I will paint the top hooks blue, leaving areas of the metal showing through.
more updates to come...

OK.. so i went and made some changes to my jetpack...
First,
20130920_191828.jpg
I changed the location of the back greeblies, and i changed of the coaxial connection one, for the real deal. The real part is much smaller than the resin piece...
20130922_133650.jpg20130922_140031.jpg20130922_182101.jpg
finally i added a beacon light, ( this was a bm resin beacon that i hollowed out. removing the screw inside it was not fun!!!!!) and wired a push button on the bottom of the pack. i removed a set of screws on the backplate, to make four allen head screws..

Next is a shot of the button used to turn on the beacon light, and the beacon lit up. the light is very dim, I think i may have used a higher transitor than needed.

and a final shot with helmet on. I have a SK servo kit on the way so I have the stalk off for now. more updates to come....

the armor is going to be adjusted once i get a real mannequin... that will be in a week or two though

Been awhile, but have a few updates....
I wasn't too happy with the color of my boots, so i darkened them up a bit... I have the MOW with the black elastic on the sides, which seem to just soak up the fabric paint wash I used to weather the rest of the boots. It is too cold here to rattle paint, soo i guess i will be waiting for a warm day to come!
I got my RKD v3 chest/collar/shoulder armor in, and they look great IMO
I also modeled a set of gauntlet darts and EE-3 ROTJ scope mounts in Sketch-up and I am having them 3d printed now, should be here mid- December. For $20 shipped for 4 darts, and 2 mounts, won't be a total loss if they don't turn out.
Anyway, here is what I have so far (minus the Kcr7pr harness that just arrived)

Lots of good stuff man. Looking forward to seeing more of your armor paint up.

For the boots, you don't need specific fabric paint, but just regular acrylics. I did this indoors, and it dried in no time. It's true that the canvas does soak up the paint - which is good actually. I would recommend an acrylic wash for the boots over rattlecan any day. The wash spreads the paint along the canvas, giving it an airbrushed look. From your pics, I get the feeling some areas on your boots are a bit blotchy. What do you think? I think you can fix that with some sand paper and water to blend the harder lines. Don't be afraid with acrylics. You can always paint over top :)

Thanks for the advice :)
I should have been more specific! The fabric paint is an acrylic paint, which I used on the canvas part of the boot in various stages of washes. Eventually my washes would have less and less water, since the canvas part of the boot was pretty damp at that point. The part that gave me and issue was the Black elastic parts, that run up the sides of the boot, near the ankle. That material just soaks up any paint wash, even just straight paint!
For the Black elastic part, i plan to just mask that area off and lightly dusting it with some dark gray spray paint, so that the elastic matches the center stripe.
The boots do seem blotchy in the photographs, ( which are from a ****** camera phone), but in person the paint blends much much better. I have areas of browns, purples, even white areas that are roughed up with sandpaper and steel wool.
Once I am done, my sister in law is going to hook me up with a professional photo shoot, but until then, my camera phone is all i have to work with :(

Gotcha :) in that case- awesome! Haha!

Spray paint will definitely help on the elastic part. I chose to go more black with the centre stripe. Now you got me thinking again to rough it up even further

MrDJ, you are doing a great job on this build. Very impressive work.

What are your thoughts on the MOW balaclava? I have been kicking around at getting one of those for accuracy or get an under armor style one to use so that it wicks the sweat away, which I know I will need.

Deathproof- yeah i might even go alittle darker, the exhibit pic i used and the rotj screen cap vary greatly! I want the boots to have more of a brown hue to them, since i really want my suit to be rotj movie accurate.
I will post a better pic tonight....

Toolguy- thanks for the compliment... Wellllllll, the quality is amazing, it is the same material as the neckseal, which is a very light weight nylon, i think. I dont know how well it works for sweating, since i have tried it on twice for two seconds. For a larger head ( i wear a size 7 3/8 hat), the balacava might be e too small. If my head was one size smaller, this would fit brillantly!

In the next day or so i will be posting a couple things in the cargo hold, rkd v2 armor, fiberglass shoulders, couple other things and this balacava......
