    Rogue Studios' ESB Color list & Painting Techniques

    *03/12/08 UPDATE..I will be going through the text and editing some things as well.

    *update 5/7/06- On the paint master of the MR I used an all topical method and here's the interesting part I think. I used a complete masking method on the 2nd helmet which should be on display at comic con. Also the color updates below are what I found out while under the gun trying to get it for everyone who may want an MR helmet. One last thing the MR helmet is outrageously accurate for not being a direct casting and unless you have an uber sized head it'll be just fine for all sizes.

    Also some of these methods are intermixed between topical and scratch methods so if you see the word "seal" that applies to topical. I highly recommend using all Floquil ENAMELS and do a scratch method laying all of the scratches and peeling off. The original was done this way and enamel paints allow accuracy when peeling. If you seee topical on an original helmet that means it was done as a repait or after the fact.

    On the paint master of the MR proto #1 I used an all topical method and here's the interesting part I think. I used a complete masking method on the 2nd helmet. Also the color updates below are what I found out while under the gun trying to get it for everyone who may want an MR helmet. One last thing the MR helmet is outrageously accurate for not being a direct casting and unless you have an uber sized head it'll be just fine for all sizes.

    This is where I have it now and unless labeled 'unsure' I'm fairly confident it is the correct color based on input research and opinions of actual obeservations made by people who have seen the helmet and suit. All colors are Floquil or Polly Scale paints it really doesn't matter which you purchase as long as the color is the same they are the same paints for the most part. If you have questions please let me know or post them here and I'll help you out.

    *Update*
    I almost forgot. You have to tone down the helmet with an acrylic wash in a few cases depends on how the helmet looks after painting. Basically get some of that blue window wash you use for the car 95 cents a gallon at your local store. put in a cup but keep it away from children it's poisonous believe it or not. Add a few drops of black acylic paint thus making a dirty cloudy water type mixture(not very much paint is used in this). Get a mister bottle and put the blue window cleaner in it so you can mist down dark spots and even out the finish. Don't go too heavy and using your mixture in the cup brush it on and if it's too dark just mist it and dabb with a paper towel. Do a little bit at a time and I would suggest not to do it all in one sitting or it will come out too dark. This blends the helmet and reduces the contrast of some colors I'm fairly confident this was done on the original.

    Helmet (Empire version)
    * German Field Gray or Panzer Olive Green (Cheeks and dome) court is out on this one but GFG is a very old Floquil and was produced back in the day but not now so you'll have to buy it from Tamiya.
    * Caboose (not caboose red) (mandibles) * Reefer Yellow Vertical stripes (update) also the look of this strictly dependent on heavily applied it is and don't apply heavily on frontal stripes
    * Reefer Gray update (Gray around scratches)
    * Rust (various locations)
    * Chrome (scratches) I think this was actually a color called bright silver but this works best.
    * Main color back of helmet- RLM73
    * Back of helmet scratches- Concrete
    * Earth Enamel(Rangefinder ear) I hate this paint.
    * POG Green Update!(Left ear)
    * PRR Green(I like weathered black better) (Inside cheeks) this is practically black.
    * Caboose (Red scratches on left ear).
    * Light Gray (on left ear) any light gray will do.
    * PRR Maroon for the dark color on mands may need to darken this color with a touch of black. I know the original color but Floquil hasn't made the color for almost 20 years so it's very very hard to find and this will do trust me.

    Jet Pack (AOSW version)
    * Light Blue
    * Chrome
    * Grimey black (weathering for exhausts etc.)
    * Boxcar Red
    * UP armor Yellow
    * White

    Armor (AOSW version)
    * Reefer Yellow (Shoulders and knees put on heavier on knees but not much this color gets darker the more you throw down).
    * ATSF Catwhisker Yellow (Shoulders and knees the trim around the scratches).
    * UP Armor Yellow (Shoulders and knees to highlight darker spots).
    * US Med. Green (Chest, cod, back, buttplate).
    * Yellow Zinc Chromate (I could not locate in floquil so I used testors for trim around scratches)
    * Black (For speckles and weahtering)
    * Chrome

    Guants (AOSW)
    * Wisconson Central Maroon
    * Weathered Black (weathering and highlights creates that purplish look you see)
    * Chrome
    * Rock Island Maroon (calc buttons)

    Ok, Using the dome as an example first and then we'll move onto the mandible.

    Primer coat your helmet if you choose. Grab a can of chrome spray paint whatever works best for you but make sure the surface is free of dust and it's not real humid outside this paint can get real tricky. Spray it on if it looks ****** let it dry and put on another coat or sand it down and start over (I hate that part) *NOTE let this dry for a few days. Apply the POG(Panzer olive green). Ok there is a real trick here make sure you get it on good otherwise the chrome shows through and it also lightens up the green a lot.

    Mandibles are the toughest. After chrome has dried apply the Caboose and it let dry. Then apply the Gray areas and then the PRR maroon (Dark over the light color thinking) that's it on that as well.

    There will be issues with masking off with tape for example the cheek area. This is a toughie for me but use your best judgement but I hand painted the inside cheek so no masking issue there and I airbrushed on the green cheek so basically airbrush the cheek green and then hand paint the inside cheek. If you have to mask with tape seal the paint with a coat dulcoat or semi gloss(yes semi-gloss(Testors) it creates a hardcoat which prevents future scratches and you can dulcoat the helmet later).

    When masking for the verticle stripes you can seal the green and then paint the stripes and then scratche helmet it will just take more than a tooth pick but it's not a worry. After all is said and done apply the acylic coat and a little scotchbrite to smooth it out.

    *Note also if the Lark gray doesn't look dark enough try Euro Dark gray instead it's a matter of choice but I felt the gray had bluish tones to it so I used the lark. Also your colors are going to look funky until you apply the acrylic coat so don't worry. You see evidence of this on the real stuff.

    I hope this helps and I did not hold back this is how I did it.

    Re: Colors

    So...Weathered Black for under the cheecks is actually PRR Green, and Euro 1 Gray for the scratches is actually SP Lark Dark Grey?

    Did you get the ESB armor too? Rumor is that the gauntlets are the same color as the Panzer Olive Green...true?

    One question....are all the polly paints the brush type or do they offer spray paint (like for the panzer olive green)??

    OOPS...forgot to ask too. Any idea which color the shoulder bells/knees are for ESB??

    Thanks

    Re: Colors

    I am working the ROTJ right now..The mandible color is the same from what I cna tell it's just not as weathered (no acrylic coat).

    All of the paints are designed for aribrushes.

    The new technique is very simple paint the helmet with Chrome paint entirely let it dry for a few days then paint the dome for example with acrylic Panzer olive green (it does come in enamel so be careful) after painting just use a toothpick to rub off the necessary scratches it's really cool and works great you have to refine it a bit to do the mandibles but this is the primary method I will be using and although not earth shattering since some of you may already be using this method I just haven't heard anyone press it that much. Make sure you seal the finished work with a clear coat then a dulcoate to prevent tearing when masking or accidental scratches. I think this method explains the mysterious appearing scratch on the left inside cheek of the ESB.

    Take care

    Oh yeah on the knees.

    I used the Reefer yellow, Up Armor and Catwhisker for my knees. Looking at Empire I feel the Knee color is derived from laying on the Reefer Yellow pretty heavily with several coats this is a strange color and the less you put on the more yellow it looks and the more you put on the more it sways Orangish. There is another color Yellow that I think(keyword) was used on the Prepro knees..TTX Yellow but it was the under layer yellow you can see it on the AOSW Left knee. Also another yellow to grab is Depot Buff it may have been used on a few bells and knees for the dark misted color you see but I used UP armor yellow for that but test it before doing it.

    It can get kind of hairy doing the knees and shoulders but just take your time.

    About the window cleaner black paint wash, do you do it all over the helmet or just to the dark areas, and if so what are the dark areas?

    I think you are right in saying this technique was used for the ROTJ helmet, but i think the ESB helmet had the silver applied topically after the helmet had already been painted and then had a good rub down with a scotch brite pad. I think it had another going over with the scotch brite after the silver was brush painted on too.
    I could be wrong, but thats how it looked to me.

    The topical method is a very solid theroy and I can't say for sure how it was done definitively however I do use a scotchbrite to even out the gray and the PRR Maroon since they are topically applied on my helmet. I do see some silver areas on the real deal that were without a doubt topical but I think those were touch up areas. Again this is just a personal theroy and I'm not endorsing any of this as fact.

    Yeah, It's impossible for any of us to know exactly how it was done. And I do believe there are traces of both topical and masking application on the ESB helmet.

    The one thing that has me leaning toward a mostly masked job on ESB is what Rouge Studios mentioned- that the topical areas on the helmet are painfully obvious when compared to the other areas of weathering. Now I don't believe proves anything either way, but it is something I've been curious about.

    Re: Colors(update see first post)

    I had a chance to see these colors myself at D*con, and I must say, it was like looking at the rosetta stone of paint You can easily imagine these colors to be a bit different in your head, but when you see color after color that is so similar to every corresponding part of the suit in any reference pic, it's easy to see that these paint colors are the same. I have mixed so many colors in the past, it's nice to finally be able to just pop a jar open and use it straight from the bottle ....... I'm just wondering what colors were used on the Pre-Pro suit

    Lee,

    I'll try painting the helmet silver first then.

    When do you paint the grey though, before or after you have clear coated over the green and silver? Also, have you painted the grey by brush or airbrush?

    If you could do a quick step by step painting, weathering and clear coating of the dome that would be great! Oh, and when do you use the scotch brite?

    Cheers,

    Keith.

    Multiple pics were taken of his helmet at D*C. They will be posted soon, but please be patient as there are a ton of other pics that need to be sorted through still.

    Seeing this helmet in person (along with the rest of his costume) is like looking at the AoSW suit. Lee's suit is the best RotJ/SE suit I have seen so far.

    Thanks Lee!! The shops I was at didn't have much if any 1/2 oz. bottles, so that was why I was having a hard time finding it. I went to one site and found it until I found it was $7.50 to ship, to heck with that. I found it at www.testors.com with only $3.82 shipping, So I got three bottles of it.

    A question about the Reefer Yellow and Up armor yellow.

    The base is the Reefer yellow, do I go with it so it is more orangish, or do I go light so it is more yellow? I always though they had an orangy tint.

    Is the Up armor yellow just misted on the tops(middles) of the bells and knee fronts, on the edges? I'm not sure what you ment by "highlight the darker spots" in your first post.

    THanks,
    Lynn

    First off let me say BRAVO to LEE!!!!!!!
    Thanks You so much for all your hardwork, not to mention the money and time involved.
    Thanks to you, our Fetts will look 1000 times better AND more ACCURATE.
    It's people like you that keep this Group and Hobby going!
    I was lucky enough to find ALL of the colors in stock at a Local Hobby Haven. I went in with the Entire list and walked out with them all.
    The guy asked what I was working on and I told him.
    He seemed Bewildered and just shook his head.
    He also told me to let him know if I needed more, he can order them by the bottle.
    Lynn TXP 0369, if you cannot find them, I can help you.
    Let me know how many bottles you need. There are 4
    Hobby Havens, 2 Hobbytown USA's, and a couple of Scale Train stores here Localy in KC, so I'm sure I can help you if need be.
    Thanks again Lee!!!!

    AOSW is the Art of Star Wars exhibit. To add to your question, what about the ESB jet pack? Any research on these colors?

    Regarding the painting techniques for the shoulders and knees, I'm admittedly a bit confused as to the application too Lee.

    AWESOME!!! When I get ready to paint my helmet.... Oh wait... I don't have a helmet and I have no painting skills!

    GREAT info RS! We def need more info like this shared on the board!

    Having seen RS' armor in person I can tell you the overall look and feel is VERY much like what I saw at MoM. It just looks and feels like the real thing!!!

    Please do not confuse Brak's comments as though he was feeling me up at the con. Just wanted to get that out LOL.

    Lynn: on the yellow that is a matter of taste but I would suggest painting one coat let it dry a few mins and spray another. I went a little thicker on the Knee (too much I think) and they came out really orangish in pics but it was on really thick. It was kind of cool since it developes a contrast between the knees and shoulders and makes you question are they orange? or are they yellow?..it's one freaked out color.

    I don't know if I mentioned this but be very sparing on the acrylic wash you can over do it *Less is more if that makes sense. You are only doing this to interlock the colors visually and tone down the bright ones like the kill stripes etc. it makes it all blend into one tone.

    Thanks Lee, Sorry it took soo long to respond, I forgot I asked this... :p

    I hope to paint in the next week or so. Do you have pics of your suit? I( don't remember seeing any in the DC thread or I missed them....

    Is any chalk/pastal dust weathering used on any of the parts? I really want to avoid using this this time around for a different look.

    Are the knees/shoulders misted with black paint?

    Thanks,
    Lynn

    Re: ESB Color list and Rouge Studios' painting techniques

    The knees ar misted with UP armor yellow. But mist in streaks if that makes sense it's kind of splotchy. It creates a darker shadowy area. Do you happen to have any photos of the shoulders from AOSW? you can see a slightly darker yellow misted on the bells.

    As for chalks I used a little bit of black and dirty gray. I bought them from micromark they are called weathering chalks. Actually a friend of mine sent them to me to try out LOL. After painting the bells yellow I then loaded up the airbrush with the UP armor and lightly misted and concentrated in a few areas to creat slightly darker spots (very subtle) I then scratched of my scratches and dents and dirtied it up with chalks(This was the only area of the armor I used chalks)...I like anything that doesn't looked airbrushed when it comes to weathering.

    If this is still confusing let me know. I darkened the pic a tad so you can see misting I hope and they look a little orangish because of that but they are yellow.

    Here's one of the jet pack not one drop of mixed paint and no misting except for weathering. This one is going on EBAY very soon. The scratches aren't perfectly matched since I built it as a test pack to test technique. I'll get pics of the suit up soon hang in there.

    Lee, I painted my bells and knees today using the Reefer yellow. I sprayed the full bottle on both sets of armor, but it is still as yellow as can be. It is no where near turning the orangish yellow as I think it should as in your armor pic and on the CD.... Should I get another bottle and spray it on?

    I sprayed the Med Green on the armor and it looks great!!!

    Does the green armor have the black wash to darken it and blend everything in as well like the helmet?

    Not sure what to say about the Orange thing but have you worked it with UP armor yellow yet? Also the knees and shoulders really are that Orange I think they just photograph that way. I probably should put out a warning * results may vary. Glad to hear about the green.

    I have sprayed some of the up armor yellow and you can see some darker spots. I'll try to photograph it and see what I get.
    It looks really good, don't get me wrong, it just isn't what I was expecting.
    Maybe when I do some weathering on it and clear it flat, it'll change.

    Does the green armor have the black wash like the helmet?

    Thanks man! Oohh, I stirred the heck out those bottles......

    Here are pics of my repainted green armor with the Med US green, almost finished except for some final weathering scratchs and the final clear flat. A black wash has been applied.

    The bells and knees have not recieved any weathering yet. I'm still deciding if I need more Reefer yellow, the UP armor yellow has been applied splotcy and streaky.

    LMK what you think.

    I would seal those knees and shoulders with a light hit of a semi-gloss and that should do it and then apply weathering.

    Thanks, So the yellow color looks OK? When complete, should do a final seal of semi gloss or do a flat?

    Should I do a final seal of semi gloss on the green or do it flat?

    I have always done flat, but.....

    Perhaps someone in this thread who has painted their bucket ESB colors and done a succesful job of it might want to make a full tutorial.

    Something which explains in detail the steps required to make a masterpiece such as their own helmet.

    Perhaps even a small diagram with numbers which detail what part is what (ie: mandibles?) and what the best method of painting that area would be.

    Surely this person would be considered a TDH god by all for the foresight to enlighten the rest of us.

    Oh come on, just make the **** tutorial already LOL.

    LOL TK0000 just make sure the numbers are clearly printed so I can tell what I'm painting.

    Actually, the aforementioned post was in all seriousness. It would be great to have a fully detailed guide by someone who knows what they are doing. These helmets aren't cheap and not everyone has buckets of money to throw away on redoing things over and over until its done right. Might as well get it right the first time.

    I am sure that I can speak for myself and all the future unskilled Fett-heads when I say "Lead us through the valley o' mighty skilled Painters".

    I understand Lee, you probably get inundated with requests to paint buckets etc.

    I think RogueStudios, Lynn and TK409 should get together and compile their MasterWorks into a tutorial.

    This isn't to say that others aren't talented but in my own personal opinion these are the three who stand out the most in my vision of Fett's bucket. One other guy here, who has supplied me with my bucket, does some primo work too but I don't think he does paintjob stuff.

    I have yet to look into painting armor and blasters but that will come after I finish the bucket.

    This has nothing to do with helmets but the grimy black that you list for the JP is that the color that makes the bars around the symbols and on the main tank?

    I used it primarily for weathering but it's not a bad idea to use it for that since toned down colors are best. It gives it that used look.

    Hmmm, I would personally recommend painting your armor first (if you already have it) before tackling the helmet. The old saying that practice makes perfect is true here, and the helmet is the most important part of this costume. I can paint armor all day long, but I don't know if I'm comfortable enough with my own skills to paint a helmet (I eventually will). Armor can easily be repainted if you goof up, but to screw up on a helmet usually results in starting all over again.

    I'm having trouble finding a couple of the paints, and I'm thinking maybe they are listed differantly from the sites listings. So I'm wondering if the "PRR Green" is actually the same as "PRR Burnswick Green", and the other one being the "Euro Dark Green" the same as "Br. Dark Green". Somebody...anybody, please chime in if you know the answer.

    Thanks

    Prr Brunswick is correct I probably left that off by accident. I was going by memory when I made the lsit sorry. The British dark green is not too far off and actually could stand in for that color especially since that is one I am unsure about.

    A little bit OT, but I was going to buy the paints, and seeing that this will be my first real full project using an airbrush, I'm curious as to how much coverage is possible with a 1/2 oz. or 1 oz. container of paint. It doesn't seem like much to me, but then again I am new to this technique. So how much would be enough, or how do I scale it. I'm doing armor, gauntlets, jet pack, bucket, the whole deal. Do I load up or not?

    Thanks

    All the paints need to be thinned to spray (directions of thinning amount on bottle), so the amount of paint needed is a little less.
    I bought 3 X 1/2 oz. bottles of the US med green for the armor.
    1oz. of the Reefer yellow for the knees and bells, however, you should have another 1 oz. bottle to do the pack.
    1 oz.Wisconson Maroon for the gauntlets.

    The 1 oz. bottles should be good for "most" applications. Some of the paints only come in 1/2 oz. so if ordering get 2 minimum, 3 to be safe if doing large parts like all the green armor, blue on JP, or any other area that the specified paint only comes in 1/2 oz. bottles.

    If it just me or do other people find the Polyscale Boxcar Red isn't really all that red? More sort of a brown?

    I'm using it on the exterior of the T visor (mandible?) and I'm finding that its more sort of a brown than it is a red.

    This is of course ontop of a chrome base but I'm using multiple coats of the Boxcar Red.

    Also, in the pictures located on the ONLINE BOBA FETT RESOURCE CD v1.0 or whatever its called... the ESB looking Fett has silver/chrome colored left ear but this thread says RLM Green??

    I do not know the color of the box car red in person, but from what I have seen, the mandible colors from the Prepros down to ESB to Jedi (which was a prepro helmet of sorts) lean more toward being a rust/brown-red color than a true red.

    Another good question to ask would be what color is the rear ventilation area on the back of the helmet?

    Looks like it could be Boxcar Red but it could also be a Maroon of some kind too.

    OK, so I know that I have to thin out the paints for airbrushing. What is recommended to get here. Does it matter if it says it is for acrylics or enamel. I saw 1/4 oz. containers on the testors site for 2.99 a pop. That doesn't seem like much of a deal considering all of the painting I will be doing. I'll have to get a suitcase of the stuff. They also have "Floquil - Polly Scale Airbrush Thin 16 Oz." for 7.99, a far better deal. Can I use this or is it the wrong stuff. Just a tad bit confused and lacking knowledge here. Can someone please shed some light. Thanks a bunch.

    Hey there, I need some help.

    I'm tracking down the colors for the ESB helmet and was hoping someone that's gotten them can give me the numbers for a couple of the paints

    RLM Green (There seems to be a couple on the Paint charts, I'm not sure which one)

    Euro Dark Green (I've found Dark Green, not Euro Dark Green)

    Either the Floquil or Polly S will work. Man this is very enjoyable to me. Painting will start soon.

    OK, here's a quick question, I finally been able to secure these paints in Sweden (wasn't easy).

    Anyway, I know that the Euro Dark green is only listed as unsure for the back of the helmet but I ordered it anyway. The only one that seems to carry that color is Model Masters (acrylics) so that's what I ordered. When I tried it out next to the Panzer green I was a bit surprised! To me it just looked way to much like the Panzer green, only a tad darker. It also seems to lack a lot of the blue tone that I expected it to have. All the ref pics seems to have the back green/blue much darker then the dome and cheeks.

    Any thoughts? Have anybody actually used this paint on a finished bucket? Did I get the wrong paint?

    I've found all the colors except the RLM Green, and PRR Green. Are these Polly Scale/Floquil colors? Testors Acrylic?

    Prr Green is Floquil/Polly S (one in the same doesn't matter)..the other is Testors (technically all brands are Testors since Testors owns all three). Acrylic/Enamel..I use Acylic although I have been told Enamels were used on the Jedi and prepro helmets.

    So we got the chrome (bright silver) scratches, the grey scratches...what about the purplish-grey scratches around the mandible?

    PRR Maroon need to add a little black to it to darken if you don't use acrylic coate. You guys know where to send the Super Bowl tickets right?

    Just wondering what everyone used as a protective coating on their helmets after they were finished painting it all.

    Duracoat? Clearcoat of some kind?

    Rogue:
    Thank for this info man! I'm also curious, I painted my mandibles with Floquil Tuscan. Is that color close to Boxcar Red? I just don't want to repaint this if the colors are fairly the same! But if it's totally different, please tell me!

    If anyone other than RogueStudios could also confirm this, I'd greatly appreciate it

    Cheers,
    Bobo

    Bobo,

    I don't know how much weight my opinion holds on this matter but I used the same Tuscan as you and I swear its on! Someone else may say otherwise but I can't tell the difference.

    Yeah, I think I followed your lead with the Tuscan. And ofcourse, your opinion is VERY heavy Any opinion which helps holds weight!

    So did you visually compare the two? The reason I ask is because now I'm starting to think that maybe Tuscan is a little too brown and not enough red? I hope I'm wrong.

    My personal opinion is that Tuscan has too much brown-- a little more coffe than rust-like.

    I went through the testor's site while ordering my paints i wrote up a shopping list with part numbers.

    Helmet (Empire version)
    * Panzer Olive Green (Cheeks and dome) F505113
    * Boxcar Red (mandibles) F414281
    * UP Armor Yellow (Verticle stripes) F414170
    * MILW Road Orange (Verticle stripes) F414152
    * SP Lark Dark Gray 'unsure' (Gray around scratches) F414182
    * Rust (various locations) F414323
    * Chrome (scratches) I think this was actually a color called bright silver but this works best.
    * Euro Dark green 'Unsure' back of helmet. 4729 (Model Master)
    * Panzer dark yellow (Rangefinder ear) if you do not have aluminum ears you will need to mix a silver with this to tone it down. F505111
    * RLM Green (Left ear) 'unsure' F505056
    * PRR Green (Inside cheeks) this is practically black. F414164
    * Rock Island Maroon (Red scratches on left ear). F414248
    * Light Gray (on left ear) any light gray will do. F505061

    Yeah, I was worried about that
    Thanks lordfett, that'll help

    So, before I make my decision on repainting or not, does anyone maybe have a side by side picture comparison of the Tuscan vs. Boxcar?

    Cheers,
    Bobo

    *BUMP*

    Oh yeah, and I also wanted to know whether I should rub that dark wash stuff onto the armor, jet pack and other parts as well?

    Other than that, I'm also wondering what is the best thinner to get for my airbrush...since I've never used one :p
    (should I use my airbrush for all my suit?)

    Thanks!

    I added the costs up for the list that Lord Fett made a few posts up. Going through the http://www.testors.com, the total came too, not including shipping, around $42.48 Just thought I would give you guys a rough price sketch... - Tim Allen

    This site has some paints on sale. http://www.hobbylinc.com/prods/rh_flo.htm That's where I got mine from. They didn't have all the colors though.
