UP lark dark gray is just an alternative if your not liking the reefer gray.
Does anybody know what colours could be used over here in Europe (brand of paint, paintnames..) to paint an ESB-helmet?
I'm really new at this so forgive me if this next question is herecy or something ;) :
how do you apply the paint? By brush, airbrush, paint in a can (spraying)..? Which looks best?
I'm gathering all necessary materials to start on my cardboard helmet, so it's good to think ahead :)
Try contacting a member here that goes by Micke he is in Europe and does amazing paints so I am sure he will be able to point you to the closest colors.
As for how to apply it just depnds on what types of paints you are using, if you are going by the list in this thread they are ment to be airbrushed. I have seen some people use regular rattle can spray paint with decent results. And I personally hand painted my helmet (but I wanted the colors to look a little different)
Applied new updates.
I am expecting a package from testors this week with some colors I ran out of including caboose so I am excited to try it out.
It's Caboose pretty darn sure of it but heck no one really knows to be 100% certain. I used it on the MR helmets and it looked really good to me.
Caboose *NOT Caboose Red
Or unless you have some already???
That would be cool to see the differences.....:thumbsup
Oh and here's the Testors link to the Caboose:
Hey not trying to sell it to anyone use what you want I'm just telling you what LFL liked and actually asked how it was matched it so well. This color is extremely close jsut has more red in it. This will be the color I use on my personal helmet. I kept them as easter eggs but I got to thinking how fair is it to the TDH? so I thought I would toss it here.
Hi, I make this list with the RS's Colors list. Are this list correct?
Helmet (Empire version)
* Panzer Olive Green (Cheeks and dome) - F505113
* Caboose (not caboose red) (mandibles) - F110088
* Reefer Yellow Vertical stripes (update) also the look of this strictly dependent on heavily applied it is and don't apply heavily on frontal stripes - F110031
* Reefer Gray update (Gray around scratches) - F414116
* Rust (various locations) F110073
* Chrome (scratches) I think this was actually a color called bright silver but this works best. - F110101
* Main color back of helmet- RLM73 - F505316
* Back of helmet- Concrete - F110082
* PRR Green(I like weathered black better) (Inside cheeks) this is practically black. - F414164
* Earth Enamel(Rangefinder ear) - F110081
* Caboose (Red scratches on left ear). - F110020
* Light Gray (on left ear) any light gray will do. - 4765
* PRR Maroon for the dark color on mands may need to darken this color with a touch of black.
I know the original color but Floquil hasn't made the color for almost 20 years so it's very very hard to find and this will do trust me. - F414161
And I can't find two colors:
* Earth Enamel(Rangefinder ear) - F110081 (Is this color correct?)
* POG Green Update!(Left ear) -
* Main color back of helmet- RLM73 - F505316 (I found It today!! :D)
I've been looking through this thread as well as searching the forums for a bit and im about ready to start laying some color on my first helmet and I had a few questions about some paint techniques I seen. I have some liquid masking left over from a RC Car I painted a few years ago and I can use that but i also seen some say you can use a toothpick to scratch your damage into the paint(I dont remember which post it was in) and I was wondering if you would do this after the paint has had time to set up a bit or if it would be better when its still kind of wet? I also did a test patch of the Panzer green on sone scrap plastic I had laying around and It seemed really dark. Panzer Olivegrun 1943 is what I got at the hobby store. Is that different than the Panzer Olive Green?
in my experience, the best time for the scratches is when the paint is dry to the touch, but not cured. it still comes up fairly easily, but is solid enough to scratch, not smear.
Hey Lee I was only able to find caboose as an enamel.. is that correct?
Lee has said that the original was painted with all enamels and he recomends doing the same.
I disagree with his color choice for that... but its whats on his list. I usualy use RLM green (one of the mediums) that has that more forest deep green.
In my opinion the RLM green for left ear is a little too dark.
Just finaly after waiting got my package from Testors... light blue for the jet pack AINT THE COLOR. Please someone help me. I wanted to touch up where my jet pack becon got ripped off and not it looks as though that aint gonna h appen any time soon. I wish someone would update the master list withe the paint identification number. The unspesific labels arnt much help and i have noticed a ton of people who have had issues. Goot paint colors arnt worth spit unless you know the right one to get.
And on the left ear, Lee, you claimed it was Panzer olive green on your most recent list, that aint right... its obviously a more pine green color. RLM 83 Light green is the color I have allways used and it looks close enought to me. You can add a few drops of your dome color to make it a bit closer.
Any help on the jet pack blue color would be great!
Lee told me to use Floquil "Light Blue" #F110051. That is what is on my pack.
Thanks bro, in the next week or so Spidey and my self are going to do two things, I am going to round up all of my favorite lee picks that I use as well as my ROTJ pics and post the name, color number and type of paint along with a flash/noflash pic of painted swatches. Spidey will be finding matches at the local wallmart/mj designs of the 99 cent paints and posting swatches and names for thoughs as well.
Results may vary.
And that kids is why he is the master and we are all the apprentence! Lee looks amazing as usual!
No words can describe the pure awesomeness that is Lee. :lol
I've read that white is actually the color of the ROTJ jet pack side tanks, thruster nozzles, etc.....but it always looks more like a silver-gray in the pics. What kind of weathering do you guys do to achieve that proper effect???
(I know this isn't helmet related, but the last few posts have featured ROTJ jet packs. :b )
Hey, thanks folks. Unfortunately that is the first and only pack I have ever painted to this point. I think that was about 3 years ago but I am working on another and I'll pop some pics as soon as we get the pack completed.
I have a question about sealing the helmet...after I apply the silver do I need to seal it prior to the first coat of paint? My concern is that once I start to make my scratches they may go through to the primmer layer. Suggestions?
Am I just blind and missing this on the list or what? I see for the mandibles, the darker gray around the main gray is PRR Maroon, but what exactly is the main gray used on the mandible weathering? Is it the same color as the gray on the green dome and cheeks?
You want to use SP Lark Dark Grey around the scratches, and flint gray for the super light grey marks. The PRR Maroon is the dark red around the scratches. Needs to be dark end a tad.
You can seal the paint with any clear coat lacquer. I like testors brand semigloss. Thats what I use.
After recently painting my gauntlets I am really having a hard time thinking that Wisconson Central Maroon is the correct color. It seems really too dark and almost too brownish as opposed to redish to be correct. I've looked at it in all different kinds of lighting conditions and it always just seems too dark. Anyone have any suggestions to the contrary?
It looks close to me. Here are my gauntlets in natural sunlight, painted with Polly Scale Wisconsin Central Maroon......
Yeah my gauntlets are MoW. I'm thinking about going back over them with a light mist of Rockisland Maroon or possibly Boxcar Red.
I know the colors listed for the gauntlets is for a "AoSW" but in the MoM Re pics there is definatly more of a redish hue to them I know it may be resultant of the flash but that means when I take a picture of my gunts with a flash something similar should happen, which it doesnt.
Hmm. . . from different threads I've read, it would seem the Boxcar Red varies quite a bit from batch to batch.
I've picked it up pretty recently in both a 1 oz. bottle (acrylic) and even a spray can (enamel), and it just appears to be the same dull red-brown as always.
If it looks good to you then go for it... but my bottles look way to purple to me. :)
Just make sure you folks keep reading the list for updates I changed it to Caboose a while back boxcar was most probably used on the ROTJ bucket since those and a few others were painted separately from the ESB.
Here is a great side to compare different colours; FS, RLM, Testorīs Model Master aso.
That is a good site Thomas but looking at the colors over a pc monitor will throw you way off.
Youīre right! But itīs god for changing if you canīt get a special colour.
For example: you canīt get FS34102. So you can use Xtracolor x116, Polly S 500815, Gunze Sangyo H310, Model Master 1713 or Humbrol 117.
Forgive me if this was addressed earlier in this thread... I'm seeing a clear difference in hue between the red on the left ear and the red on the mandibles, but both are listed as Caboose. Am I imagining this? Do the experienced painters here mix something custom for the left ear red?
Count D, I've used Floquil/Polly Scale Rock Island Maroon on several helmets.
The color looks really good to me. :thumbsup
Hi, This post of mine is very knowledgable and may enhance the information of the viewers , however I would like some specific information for myself. If someone can help me then please send me a private message. Best Regards,
Hi there. Can someone in the U.S. help me obtain the model master paints? These are not avaliable in Europe. I need every color for esb helmet and the rest of the armour and jp and gauntlets should be rotj. So the SE rotj edition if you like.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks to everyone who made these final colors possible.
So my question is.....
Are all the colors talked about in this whole thread back on the main front page? I'm getting ready to paint my ESB helmet this spring and would like to make sure that I buy all the correct colors.
I think all the changes were added to the original post Turo, at least thats what I'm using for mine :)
Ah great, wheres the sandpaper? :lol
That's what I said.
clears buy it now button.:lol
Hey, sorry folks I had no idea. Let me get this helmet in and I'll try and test it out. It's just I get so much grief for these colors it's very hard for me to let this stuff out and avoid the criticisms I stand by my research 100% but I can never say the colors are 100%...99.9% maybe.
No worries bruv...
Was only havin a laugh? is a huge difference to the list?
Yep, you're correct, the colours aren't 100% correct... 99.99999999...% maybe :lol (This "maybe" is funy for me, sorry :o)
Thanks Lee :cheers
Lee its cool really :thumbsup
Edit - This colour appears to be available from Vallejo as well in an acrylic, just picked up a few bottles on ebay to test on a spare helmet I have
* German Field Gray,
Has anyone tried it yet?
is there any updates on the colors?
Right now it appears German Field Gray is a good one. I like it. Myself and Tyler Durden ran some color color swatches over some photos and it's looking pretty darn good. Just make sure you get enamels.
Who sells GFG in enamel? For that matter who sells US Med Green in enamel?
You want it in the rattle can, the bottle is acrylic, the can is not.
The US medium Green is available from Model Master/Testors if I recall correctly.
Nope, Lee. They have a color called Med Green, but it's not the same. I got duped by the name four years ago when repainting my armor. It has a lot of yellow in it, perfect for a Ninja Turtle. I dulled it down with a lot of black wash. I should just get a bottle of Polly Scale and try and match it to the closest enamel.
Polly Scale US Med Green is numbered A/N 612
Testors Med Green is FS 34102
Very strange. I have it my collection of paints and I have painted a few sets of armor with it. Maybe they don't make it anymore.
I've got some pics of suits I did with that color and one of it next to the AOSW suit I'll post those as soon as I get them lined up here. I agree there may be variances and the polly s version is prob best alternative.
Hi Lee, I asked a few years back (yes years :D ) but I don;t think it was ever properly answered. Is the ESB armor the same color as the Helmet? In the movie caps and production stills, it looks like it is. In some scenes, it appears to be the olive tone of the dome, yet in the Bespin toture chamber foyer, it looks like the medium green. Then in the while hallways, it's looking olive again. what's going on here? Do you know, or does anyone else know for certain whether the ESB armor color is the same medium green as ROTJ? Thanks
These days I think most of us are using floquil/pollyscale US med green for the ESB armour, which is the same color Lee recomends for the ROTJ armour. We still don't know for shure, but Dm used US med green on JB's armour, and it looked great. I have used it on mine as well since then, and I like it.
WoW, not to sound dumb, but who are DM and JB? :O
Darth Miller & Jerremy Bulloch
OK, ack! JB... DUH!
Darth Miller made a suit for Jeremy? How? When? Why? The plot thicks!
Hey sorry been away for a bit. The armor and helmet colors are different. I'm about to finally start on my own personal suit (never done this before). I will post what colors I use etc. some of this stuff changes like the weather.
Uhhh....that musta been one big rock you were hiding under??? :lol
Just wondering what color everyone's using for the lighter color on the silver parts on the back and in the dent. I don't see anything on Lee's list and I can't figure out what it is. Seems to look different in all the photos.
Here's a pic I borrowed from Superjedi's awesome thread to illustrate. I hope he doesn't mind:)
If you can get hold of humbrol enamels, try 147, it looks grey but depending on the adjacent colour, takes on a blue or green hue. I tried 100's of different mixes but this was spot on from the tin...:thumbsup
to the hobby store I go.
dude is there anything i cant find out in here? thanks!
Howdo chaps of TDH...
I am a new poster on this site but a long trem reader. I am currently awaiting delivery of a helmet from Bobamaker and am researching the paints available here in Scotland / UK.
Does anybody on here know which paints can be purchased in the UK, eg, brands, colours etc, for an ESB style bucket?
Really hope somebody can answer my query???
Rod1138 aka rodsafett
Hi Rod, try searching for Terminal Fettlers list of ESB colours, they are all Humbrol I believe and available in the UK :thumbsup
Any more with any more?
Thank you :cheering
You can even order them online at testors.com. I'm pretty sure they ship international. They stock Floquil and PollyScale. You generally want to use enamels as much as you can, as stated in this post. Cheers! and Good luck!
Thanks for the great info. I will have to use this when i finally get around to painting my helmet. :doh
this may have already been asked, but has anyone tried using silver leafing for the exposed metal
Awsome stuff dude!!!!
This thread is so awesome!
I have a question, though. I saw that the main colours for the shoulders and knees are these:
* Reefer Yellow (Shoulders and knees put on heavier on knees but not much this color gets darker the more you throw down).
* ATSF Catwhisker Yellow (Shoulders and knees the trim around the scratches).
I found them at testors, but they look way too light?
And now I see they don't ship to Europe. Is anyone willing to help a girl in need of paint? :)
And regarding customs, I have a friend whoīs a customs officer and he said that they usually wonīt bother confiscating such small amounts of paint. I got all my paints from the US... Oh, and there are European webshops selling these paints as well. PM sent.
Thanks! I've sent them a mail, and hopefully they will be helpful. I looked at the link you sent me, but couldn't find the right paint names when I searched? I have no clue on what numbers to search for, so I'll have to see if I can find a conversion chart or something. They had a lot of colours, so it looks promising if I can find the colours I need.
I'm still wondering about the reefer and catwhisker yellow, they look too dim. Did they change or anything?
