The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Hi guys,
I am really thrilled to be able to share this info with you although the circumstances that brought the ability for me to share this is less than ideal.
As some of you may know, there is strong evidence that the PrePro2 costume was supposed to be THE esb hero suit. It is the suit that was most photographed for publicity. It was the suit that Kenner used for their photoshoot for the toy. It was also the Prepro2 helmet that was sent to Don Post to be cast for their helmet line.
As long as I have been in this hobby there has been a rumor that the ESB suit was stolen. There was never really any proof, just a rumor. Well, in a way, the ESB suit, or at least the INTENDED ESB helmet was stolen as well as the jet pack. I do not know if the rest of the suit was stolen or not, but at least the helmet and the jet pack have resurfaced.
The story about how the helmet resurfaced is an interesting one. The helmet was brought to a popular auction house with hopes of being sold for approx $80k. However, the auction house looked into the background of this particular piece and was told by Gary Kurtz (I think it was Kurtz, but it might have been Johnston... it has been a while) that it was indeed a helmet that had been stolen. I find it a bit difficult to believe that Kurtz would remember THAT helmet in particular, but regardless, however it got there, it was in private hands. Fortunately for us, a close friend was able to take a number of photos of the helmet which sadly was in VERY bad shape. This friend is NOT a member of this board and it makes me very sad to hear that someone here on this board is claiming to have taken these pics themselves. Why people can't simply stand on their own merits, talent and skill instead of lying and sucking off the effort of others like vultures, is beyond me. Anyway, while this friend had initially asked that these images not be shared, due to the dishonesty of others, he has now said that I can share these with everyone! So, I guess something good has come from this bad situation.
This helmet was bought directly by a high end collector in CA who also has the jet pack. This is the only hero helmet and hero jet pack that we know to be in private hands.
On a final note, I want to remind everyone that Rogue Studios' plug is a first generation casting of this helmet. Sadly you can see where the helmet was cut from the mold by careless people at Don Post... the two long scratches on the dome.
Enjoy and share as you would like... just don't take credit for them! BTW, I think there is a LOT to be learned from these pics in regard to helmet build and assembly, so go for it!
PS. I will not comment further on the situation that made this come about. I have said my piece and that is all I will say about it.

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Glad you could finally post these Art. These actually helped us with indentifying the origins of the helmet buck too. Good job and by the way for some reason not having 80K at the time didn't bother me too much.

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Wow! These are some excellent photos! A great way to start my Saturday morning! :thumbup :cheering
So, I'm a bit confused...the person who brought it to the auction house was still able to sell it although a Lucas representative said it had been stolen?
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
My understanding is that the auction house refused to sell it due to it being stolen. However, they didn't take any action against the owner. The owner ended up selling it privately.
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Whoa! Awesome pictures. . . glad they could finally be shared!
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Yeah Art had to track the fella down to get permission and unfortunately he's not a TDH member.
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Another thought...I don't know if you know the actual new owner but, if it were me, (let me close my eyes and pretend for a while...:drool ) I'd look to getting that thing restored. There are people on this very board who I'm sure would be able to repair that Don Post damage perfectly.
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
I do know who the new owner is. He is pretty reclusive but a few friends, unfortunately not TDH members, have seen it. The new owner did have the broken stalk repaired but as with most of screen used collectors, he has left the rest alone as making any other changes would be considered diminishing the value and authenticity. The scratches are now part of this helmets history.

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Thanks Brak's Buddy!!)
Your sharing with us is very appreciated!!

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
You are very welcome but the credit goes to the photographer who was generous enough to allow me to post them.

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
All I have to say is........It's about time these got posted!!!;)
Thanks Brak's ..and "whoever" else played a part in sharing these....
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Wow. this really comes at a good time for me, as I'm getting ready to paint a PrePro2 helmet this week. Awesome BB-Now, here's something I wonder and you don't have to comment, but the only reason you were given permission to post these images was because of someone being a bit of a liar or whatever, correct? The photographer didn't want these shared publicly....
Why the heck not? What does someone have to gain from keeping information like this a secret? That sort of behavior always confuses and upsets me. I can understand thing's like rouge studios work with the ESB helmet and a non-disclosure with Mast Replicas or whatever, but if someone had information and didn't have a contractual obligation not to share the info, why keep it to yourself when it could benfit so many others?
But either way, its cool. I'm glad to see this photos, it's going to help a lot.
Phil

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Art,
If I remember correctly, it was Gary Kurtz who identified the helmet; he seemed to recall the thin 'glassing around the dent.
-

Wow! Thanks soooooo much for sharing these photos!!!!!!!

Phil,
These pics were taken several years ago, mid 2003 if I recall correctly, and at the time this was a very sensitive issue as it was 1) a stolen item and 2) had not been sold at that point. The person who took the pictures, John, didn't want them kept secret for selfish reasons. In fact, he allowed me to share them with a few select members with the agreement that they wouldn't share them further. He didn't want these posted publicly because of the sensitive nature of the sale. Honestly, if anyone has been at fault for these not being made available to you sooner, it is because I never went back to John after the helmet was sold to ask if I could now share them. Unfortunately it was only this recent deceitfulness that prompted me to go back and ask John if I could post them. His response? "Definitely post anything you want"
In my initial post I said:

In retrospect, that was worded poorly. John didn't give me permission because of the dishonesty going on here. I finally contacted him again and asked if I could share them, prompted by this situation. Sorry for the confusion.
Again, I really don't want to go into that much more, but would rather focus on the positive aspect that these photos are finally available to the masses.
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Looking at the inside of the helmet, I can see one bolt, what appears to be, holding the RF to the helmet. Other than that, I can't tell how the ear pieces are held on. Are they molded to the helmet? I honestly can't recall the pictures of Lee's plug showing the ear pieces on.
It's a shame the Don Post employees showed such a blatent disregard towards this helmet.
Also, Braks, you said it was rumored the suit was stolen. Pardon my ignorance, but could the suit being stolen be a reason for the color change in the gauntlets and JP as well as the change in the shoulder emblem? I know this thread is to showcase this remarkable find, and I don't want to detract from it, but I would love to pick your brain on the subject. Please, PM me.
I can understand how the new owner doesn't want to be identifed. Had I just spent $80K on this piece, I wouldn't want the whole world knowing where I live. However, what I can't understand is how no one took legal action against the thief. Was there a statute of limitation on theft? Maybe one of our legal experts could chime in on this.
Again, thank you for sharing this Braks. I'm glad to see this back in trustworthy hands.

Oh I understand absolutely, and really the most important thing is that the images are out there in the world now. I've just run into the "I've got information but I don't want to share" scenario before and it bewilders me a bit. But this is great. I'm happy you remebered about these and thought to ask if you could post them.

The ear pieces , at least the lower sections, are actually bolted in place with small brass screws. You can't see it due to the tape on the PP2, but below is a pic of the ESB helmet where you can see one of them.

Honestly, I don't know. Anything I said in regard to that would be pure speculation. We know that the RotJ and PP2 helmet were painted at the same time by the same person. However, the PP3 and ESB hero as well as the PP3 and ESB suits are a bit odd as we don't really know when they were made.

I don't know if the knew owner knows it is stolen or not. He probably doesn't want to know. In addition, I doubt he paid anywhere near $80k, that was just what the original seller was wanting to get through the Auction house.

I have run into that as well and find it very unfortunate. I sometimes have to say "I have information and am not allowed to share it" but I try to never just keep something solely for the sake of keeping it from others. That is simply counterproductive to what this community is all about.

Of the three helmet interiors we've seen, all have the ears screwed to the helmet. The Prepro 2 ears are more than likely held on with screws, but they are underneath the duct tape strips.

It's a shame the Don Post employees showed such a blatent disregard towards this helmet.
"Blatent disregard" is a bit strong. At the time, the mold makers were under the impression it was an already damaged helmet. Regardless of that fact, the only damage the mold maker remembered was the knife cuts on the back. They used non-shrinking Ultracal and the helmet was stuck inside the mold. It's unclear whether the stalk broke during project—the ear cap and stalk were removed and not molded— or if the stalk broke later on.

When the Prepro 2 suit was completed, ILM already had at least 4 finished suits. From what we have gathered, I believe ESB suit change happened before any of the Prepro 2 parts were stolen.

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Thanks for clearing up my questions. I don't know nearly as much about the costume as I would like.
TD: Maybe I'm just wired different, but when I have someone else's property, already damaged or not, I do my best to get it back to them in the same condition I recieved it. Blatent disregard may have been a bit strong, but at the least, it shows me an "oh well, it ain't mine" attitude. Not trying to start an arguement, just stating my opinion.

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
How can you possibly ruin a helmet like that, that badly remolding it? HOw???? someone needs a beating for that. Otherwise that is awesome I'm glad it was found at all.
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Well when they cast it in ultracal it doesn't shrink and expands slightly. Anyway for some reason it didn't want to come out and the main guy who molded it was a premiere mold maker so I guess it was just a brain fart. Anyway those are knife cuts on the back of the helmet to get it out of the mold.
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
I just meant it shouldn't have been cast off of at all. surely Don post had the people to recreate it without molding an original? And then the helmets where nowhere near the same size as the molds they took?
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Very cool pics, I always liked that suit.....
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
They never used this mold for production it was destroyed after they poured my casting, or at least that is to the best of their memory.

Sure I'm late, but I just had to add how thrilled I am to see these. I enjoy it every time new photos surface, especially of stuff we haven't seen in a long time. Comparing the scratches, it actually doesn't look too bad after all this time (with the exception of those slices in the back).
This is sort-of on topic...I actually can't remember if I actually posted these befrore. A good friend of mine was able to take a tour of the archives a while back, where you aren't supposed to be taking photos. She was able to snap these photos of some Fett helmets in the archives, and she said it was okay to share them.

Sorry there are only the two, but it's better than zero! What I would give for photos of each helmet from all angles...
You may have seen these helmets way back when in a photo gallery accompanying an article on Starwars.com, but the photo was quite tiny. On the left there is an "unknown" Prepro, painted much in the same style as the PP2 and the ROTJ (probably the same person?). Notice the wires running down from the rangefinder stalk. The middle one is a poor looking ESB stunt (with foam blocks for the rangefinder and earpiece, and the one on the right is the PP3 (looks very close to ESB, hence MR originally using it as reference for their helmet). Tucked in the back there looks to be another ESB-type paintjob, I don't know anything else about it.
Just wanted to post these again for more prepduction helmet goodness, and in case anyone hasn't seen them.
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Wow great pics JFJ! I wonder what helmet that is on the left?!? Man has it seen some better days. It doens't look like any of the pre-pro helmets I have seen thought it is definatlly painted by the same person using the same colors. It also shows how totally different those paint jobs are compared to the PP3/ESB buckets. Even the base green of the dome and lower cheaks looks to be a totally different color.
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
That left helmet looks like the shell of a hard boiled egg being broken off :lol Love new pics!!

That helmet has been dubbed the "Sandy" helmet in honor of the woman who painted it as well as the PP2 and the RotJ. She has a picture in which she is holding all three after they had been painted. As you pointed out, it is really interesting to note the difference in both the color choice and paint style seen on these helmets vs the paint colors and style used on the ESB, PP3 and the Eyes helmet.

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Cool pics!! The midddle and the one on the right looks like they are made of rubber or thin plastic as they look pretty warped. Thanks alot for sharing!
Also i wonder about the pic of the Fett helmet from the "best of the lucas archives book" It has a weird RF stalk
and it looks like it cannot be moved into another position. Was it a ESB stunt helmet?
BB:
I remember those photos of the girl that painted them. If i remember correctly they were the proof on what colors were used on the originals.

The one on the right, the Prepro 3 helmet is definitely fiberglass, but the middle one is some sort of stunt helmet, and who knows what that is made of!

It is definitely the same kind of helmet (stunt) that we see in the "Best of the Lucas Archives" book, but I think that exact helmet is behind the one we see in those photos.

Holy cow, pure gold mine! Thanks Braks for sharing these, and everyone else.
Those ear pieces on the Pre-Pro look like metal?!? Any specualtion or am I late to the party on that?
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
I don't know why they would have an ESB stunt helmet in the first place. There was absolutely zero scenes in that movie that had Boba Fett doing anything that would resemble stunt work.
???? That's quite strange.
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
That stunt helmet was used in ROTJ when Boba flew onto the small skift that Luke was on.
-
Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Yeah, I knew that. But then why would they paint up a stunt helmet in the ESB paintjob when they were working with the ROTJ helmet for the rest of the shots? They would have made a stunt helmet to more match the ROTJ helmet. It would seem the ESB stunt was a leftover from the ESB movie, but there were no stunt scenes involving Boba Fett in ESB. It just doesn't add up.
-

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
They made smoking thrusters for the jet pack, and a working flamethrower on the gauntlets. But none of these effects were used in ESB. That would've made one awesome deleted scene!

I don't know if the knew owner knows it is stolen or not. He probably doesn't want to know. In addition, I doubt he paid anywhere near $80k, that was just what the original seller was wanting to get through the Auction house.
I used to work in the auction business, and I deal with auction houses regularly for business.
It is general practice to turn down items that are of questionable origin, reported stolen, etc and NOT report them, because there isn't a law requiring auction houses to report stolen items, and most places wouldn't report it, because it would "ruin their image" of confidentiality.
However, that being said, if it was a big ticket item, like say a Monet painting, generally the directors would call a "friend" who had a friend in the police department, well, you get the idea.
Just wanted to keep everyone informed.

Keep in mind that the rumor (and it IS a rumor... so take it as you will) was that Fett, even when he was paired down to a single character, had a much more significant and active role in ESB. As much as I would have liked to see more action, it might have destroyed his mystique and I am glad he was left obscurea nd shrouded in mystery. The assumption is that these helmets were indeed leftovers from ESB stunt scenes that never made it beyond the script... :(

Originally in ESB there was supposed to be a fight scene between Fett and IG-88 on Cloud City after Boba acquires the frozen Han Solo to take back to Jabba, but it was never filmed. There is mention of it in The Star Wars Chronicles. The ESB stunt helmets were probably built with that scene in mind.

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Yhea, that would have been a great scene, but reguardless the story stuck, They just ended up tweeking it alittle. Instead of Fett and IG-88 fighting over Han after they freeze em, they end up racing to cloud city and have a fight before hand. You can see IG-88 Sleeping with the Scrap Metal in the Junk Pile by the metalmelter as Chewie is gathing up 3-PO. C

In the Ralph McQuarie panel the speaker who is the writer of the new book they were talking about said that Ralph was given a version of the script where Fett became a main character and that is where the second revisions of the more western looking character came about. The sketch where Fett has a poncho, came from that script.

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Not sure if this helps but the prepro 2 suit was intended to be the Hero suit for ESB until some Public Relations person from LFL let the suit go into the public sector. This is why the Prepro 2 parts have not been seen since and have surfaced in a private collection. This also explains the reason for the rumored missing ESB suit it's just a different suit than we thought. I hope this helps.

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
OK Fett Friends and Fiends, I'm not trying to resurrect an old thread or anything, but I have a few questions about the comparison pix posted above. The photos on the left compared to the pictures of the REAL helmet seem to be darker. Is it the lighting or is it the effects of 20 yrs of aging on the helmet and it's paint?
A second question regarding Pre-Pro 2 suits. Is the main color of the helmet (the dome and lower cheeks) a different color from the body armor? It certainly appears so, to me. The body armor seems close to a hunter green with just a touch of blue whereas the helmet seems to be a lighter green with a more pronounced bluish tint. Is it just the lighting in the photo or are the colors that different?
Additionally, the jumpsuit looks to be a teal blue instead of a sky blue. Am I right on these assumptions or will this dog just not hunt?
Thanks for the input everyone. :cheers

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
The helmet and the armor are different colors. I believe thats a case with every version of Boba Fett. The exact colors, I don't know. I'm sure someone does though. The Suit is darker, almost like a denim color. I got a bit of a sky blue jumpsuit and misted it with black to darken/dirty it up.

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Art,
Great thread...What's the story on the gauntlets, when did the different flame unit details come about and why ?
Anyone ?

Re: The REAL PrePro 2 Helmet!!!
Christian,
The constant upgrades to the left gauntlets "gas gun" is a complete mystery. I don't know if it was a matter of them not functioning well or what the exact nature of the issue was but initially the left gauntlet included a working "gas gun" that seemingly projected some type of flame.
The Super Trooper, Preproduction 1 and Preproduction 3 costumes have the same gas gun housing which appears to be a flawed design because the "barrels" end behind the wearers hand and there is the potential of setting one's own hand afire.
The Preproduction 2 appears to have corrected this issue by wisely adding an extending tip to the gas gun so when fired, the end of the barrel was well past the wearer's hand. However, for unknown reasons, the outer casing seen on the Preproduction 1 gun was no longer to be seen on the Preproduction 2. In my mind this is another piece of evidence that tells me the Preproduction 2 didn't necessarily come before the Preproduction 3.
The ESB gas gun appears to be a further refinement to the look of the Preproduction 2 but I can only assume that they had decided not to use the gas gun as a practical effect and made the ESB gas gun non-functional (to the best of our knowledge).
For the Return of the Jedi gas guns, there is some speculation (but no definitive proof) that they may simply be reworked versions of the Preproduction 1 gas gun, with an updated outer shell. Whether this is true or not, we may never know.
That is about all I have on those.
