Rangefinder Interest: now with correct Perspex Lens Block...

Hello All, thought i would post an interest thread for my new RF top. This consists of a 0.8 mm alloy RF body (as seen on my previous RF tops) and will now be available with a screen accurate Perspex lens block. I am still tweaking the final details of this part, here's a teaser of what i have been able to produce so far...

I'd be interested in that as long as the price is right.

    That is looking sweet!

Will the housing have some type of built-in access to be able to use something like Hyperdyne's self-contained range finder LED unit (need access for battery changes)?

Garrett, would this be compatible with Gav's aluminum parts for the GMH?

Well, I have gone down the resin casting route before. The issue was making the casting thin enough to house many of the LED top mounted units people have been using. The beauty of the 0.8 mm alloy top is that maximum space can be achieved internally, where the Perspex lens block locates in the top section, this is thickened with plastic card to give the appearance it is approximately 2 mm thick. The alloy also gives more options for different stalk mounting options.

Right, makes sense , either way your RFs are great, and good to see the revival and work that goes in to perspex block ,

Hi, it will fit the Commdando 8 stalk, although you will have to tap some threads into the stalk top side where it joins the underside of the RF top. I'm right in saying there are no fixing points in the top of the stalk?

I will be working on a new master for the RF top section shortly. This will be designed around Mojo-Fett's stalk fixing points. I'm currently making a few prototypes to experiment with magnet fixing options for the lens block/RF top section. Pictures to follow shortly...

Would we be able to get one without any holes drilled so I could drill it to my fixing points?

I think this is how I will supply the top section; it will be easy to custom drill the fixing holes to match your stalk.

Hi Guys, sorry for the slow progress, work is always getting in the way...
This is prototype 1. The RF body is constructed from 2 mm plastic card. The section not surrounding the lens (excluding the top part where the LEDs protrude) is 4 mm thick, this will strengthen the part when cast, reinforcing the stalk connection as well. All the lens sections will be hand crafted, i'm working on a reliable way to drill the three holes rather than machining them across the bottom of the piece. The lens sections will be available in all the different styles as seen on the helmets. The RF will also be scaled to work with Mojo-Fetts stalk. I intend to produce a couple of other prototypes with alternative stalk/RF attachment methods...

Looking good. Was this going to be hollow to fit the electronics? Or was this one of the variations?

This RF top is designed around the original helmet, so electronics in the helmet and wires running up the hollow stalk to the LEDs in the RF top. Fitting the electronics, LEDs and batteries in the RF top was always a bit of a squeeze!

I was hoping the bottom piece was going to be like the V.2 that FP has on his so the electronics would fit better. I have one of Hyperdynes electronic kits.

I'm working on a few prototypes, this may include one for internal electronics, also the lens section can be easily modified if extra room is required...

Here's Prototype 2. This is based on a detail i noticed on one of the helmets. It makes sense as the bolts are much easier to screw in before the RF top is put on. The lens block is Super Glued to the aluminium section, holes are drilled through this aluminium section to allow the green wires to be inserted. The RF top section press fits into place securely. The alloy stalk pictured is 1.5 mm too long where it meets the RF top underside, Mojo-Fetts stalks are more accurate for a better fit...

Re: Rangefinder Interest: now with correct Perspex Lens Block...

Evening all, small update with the RF tops. I've made the moulds for the top section and will cast this part from a tough polyuethane resin. It will be available in off white or black. I'm still working on the Perspex block to perfect the production, just waiting for the milling machine to arrive...This means I will have a small selection of prototype tops available in the cargo hold shortly for a reasonable price. I'll post pics for each piece later. The top section can be pre-drilled to fit Gavin's (Mojo Fett) excellent stalk/ear sets if you are looking for an upgrade.
    Cheers, TF.
