    Rangefinder flash frequency?

I'm scratch building a rangefinder for my card bucket and am planning to adapt a metronome kit for the circuitry.

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=22544

You can adjust the speed of the flashes and I need to know roughly what frequency the rangefinder lights flash at.

Any help would be great, ty.

I'm not sure what the real one was like, but on my MR, its pretty dang fast!!!! I dunno how they actually determined that though?????

    Re: Rangefinder flash frequency?

Hey man, I designed 2 rangefinder circuit boards. My first had an adjustable frequency, because I wasn't sure what it was. My second design, I did a fixed frequency and modeled it after this-

So, my first design (which is what I still have in my personal bucket), I just held it up to my monitor and adjusted till I was there. Should be all you need. Good luck bro

It is really hard to say for sure. I don' know anyone who has seen the lights working in person. It is REALLY hard to see in ESB, but they seem to have a slow blink. However, we have seen the circuitboard in the PP3 helmet and have recreated it using all the same circuitry and resistors. When complete, the lights flashed a lot more quickly than expectsed, which is represented by the link mrgr8ness posted.

You can see the circuit baord for yourself in our galleries.

in this B/W video we see the flash sequence at about 1:30 in

it's for the supertrooper, but it is likely to be consistent with ESB.

Great link Art. I have never seen that PP3 board before. Even more evidence there that they used a microswitch in the ear instead of a tilt or mercury switch, for activation. Also points to evidence that they must have just mounted the LED's in the rf, and the circuit itself was mounted in the bucket. From the looks of it, it was a quick build, probably didn't take or have the time to lay it out nice and make the board small enough to fit in the rf. It took me a few tries as well

    Thanks that's a great help.

I'll fiddle around with it a bit then when I've got the speed right I'll replace the two pots with standard resistors.

If the whole board fits in I could leave the pots, but something tells me it'll be too big.

hi all, has anyone ever try this one yet?

i've made one of this in my junior high school project, so i assume it's not that complicated

The mini kit I've purchased is very similar to this except for the fact that in my circuit two variable resistors (pots) are used so that the frequency of the flashing can be varied.

This sort of circuit defiantly works for simple flashing LEDS but I don't know what speed that particular set up would run at.

    Re: Rangefinder flash frequency?

I've matched my LEDS to that post mrgr8ness put up, (thanks).
Also that black and white video was awesome, just for general research.

For future reference I calculated the frequency to be roughly 128 cycles per minute, or 2.13 Hz .

Thanks for all the help. Now all I have to do is build the rest of the rangefinder
