Question: Will Tamiya paints mix with other makes

Has anyone had any experience with mixing Tamiya paints with other makes i.e. Humbrol, Testor etc. I know that Tamiya paints are quite particular and have heard they don't play well with others. Can any confirm or deny this?

    Forget it!

Tamiya is acrylic, Humbrol and Testors are enamel.
I know that Testors get new acrylic paint but only with a few colours, so I think you mean the enamel.

Tamiya is great stuff... I use use it on everything non-Boba... with that said, IMHO don't mix brands on the same project.

Testors makes tons of acrylics but few people carry them. Most acrylics will mix with other acrylics but I know tamiya does not mix with citadel paints. Keep in mind that Acrylic can be painted over enamel but enamel and laquer will eat acrylic. That's why most people here like Krylon crystal clear, it's a spray paint but it's an acrylic.

    @ Zombi:

Here in Germany you can get only a few Testors Acrylics. I didnīt know that there are much more!

Thanks for the responses guys, it would seem that there is a difference of opinion about mixing Tamiya. Zombierepellant sounds like you experienced problems mixing Tamiya with Citadel paints too, I know from personal experience not to try that again. I've had to pick up a Revell aqua color because my local hobby shop never seems to have Flat Black in stock so I'm having to resort to trying to mix with other makes.

Yeah I had heard before hand that acrylics didn't mix with citadels before trying but I was desperate enough to try it anyway. As for your hobby shop never having flat black, I often find myself buying flat black because it's one of those paints that I'm never sure if I have or not.

Re: Question: Will Tamiya paints mix with other makes

I've used Citadel, Vallejo and Tamiya paints. All are acrylics, but vary due to differences in pigments and suspensions. Some have more colour pigments, and some are finer pigments which will allow for decent coverage even with thinner coats. ( thinner coats meaning that you thin your paints with water some other medium )I'm primarily a miniatures painter, so trust me on this.By mixing your paints, I'm going to guess that you're meaning combining them on a palette to create custom colours. Most paint brands won't mix well together, but basically you can do it as they are all acrylic based paints. An acrylic paint is an acrylic paint. ( to put it VERY basically )I'd say to experiment a bit and see what works. ( I know from experience, as I've done it... you CAN mix Citadel and Tamiya paints together. But I'd only do it if I had no other options. )Now if you're asking if you can layer two different brands of acrylic paints, then my answer is definately a resounding yes. As I stated above, an acrylic paint is an acrylic paint.Hope this helps, and happy painting.
