Question about layered painting

Fettsgerald

New Hunter
I got my Fang helmet in the mail a few days ago and I will be painting it very soon hopefully, but before I start I have some questions.

I have read in other people's forums that some people use tape for the layering method, but so far I have only found people who use the rub off stuff.

Initailly I though taping and cutting the scratches with an exacto knife on the tape would be the easiet route but now I am not sure.

Which is the best route to take as far as layering goes: tape or rub off stuff?

Thanks
-Stephen

You must use a Silver paint, airbrush it, and on it, with a Sable (nº 0) brush, aply the latex mask.

What's "rub-off"?

EDIT: I have read bad

Thanks guys! Glad thats cleared up.

Just out of curiosity, will this stuff in my art class work? I've used it on some paintings I have done in the past and it does basically the same thing, but I'm not sure if it will hold up to spray paint.

Its called Frisket Masking Fluid

For the silver/aluminum base use Krylon brand spray paint. I tried the Rustoleum aluminum and the paint I sprayed on top of that didn't not adhere to it and peeled of with the masking. For the weathering effects, use Windsor and Newton's liquid masking and apply with a fine brush for the detailed areas.

For those of you who use the liquid frisket... does it work well for brush painting, or more for spray? I have used it quite a bit, but only for airbrush. Never tried it with a hand brush.

Masking fluid works really well. You don't want to use masking fluid for brush painting though. I suppose you could, but I wouldn't risk it.

edit

liquid frisket is for fine/graphics arts really, so it can be used with just about any art type applications and painting mediums. ive used it for brush painting in art classes in the past.

just make sure it dosent say permenant....opps........ i alomost ruined my art final once  :p

Hey guys,

I am finally making some more progress on my helmet, but before I go any further...

Can I add food coloring or anything like that to my masking fluid, to make it easier to see w/o damaging the paint job?

Hey guys,

Just got the red on the mandibles done. We need to hit it up with a Brillo pad and maybe some black wash to dull it down a bit. When we were rubbing down the masking fluid for the red some of the purple underneath got rubbed off with it. We were thinking about hand painting it back on. What do you guys think?

Here's some pics of the progress.

Yes, I used the layered technique for my bucket too ... and I am more than satisfied so far (not 100% ready now... )
layered paintjobs are pretty cool showing the scratches and ripped-off colors very nice!

A tip: If you want to dull down the red on the mandibles, use steel-whool "000" and work on the surface ... the red gets darker and gets less shiny. Result is stunning.

keep us updated of your progress. Looks great so far!

cheers,
Manuel

while we are in the topic of liquid mask , I used a brush , but it dries so quick that it stuck onto the brush , ruining the brush and creating a snow ball effect on it , which masking fluid can i use with a brush? does it wash off?
thanks
mars

I ruined two brushes while using masking fluid. *LOL*

But that´s worth the look afterwards. I just included the two brushes in my budget so it was absolutely no pain to throw them away ... :)

There´s a possibility to use any silicon-stick with ( I guess it was terminal fettler who uses it) to get the fluid on. Works out great too.

More progress!!!

Since I already have some progress pics on here I guess I'll keep using this thread to show you guys some more. Here are some new progress pictures of what was done today by my friend Hayes and I.
