Ques/Comments/Observations:My First Lid is FINISHED!

Dman

New Hunter
Hey guys and gals, I have started my first lid. It's a DP '96 to which I have fiberglassed the inside/lower half. Also, I cut out the visor section but left a small strip across the bottom for attaching the visor to.

I am on paint job number two because I was unhappy with the way the damage was turning out. The helmet, in it's entirety, will not be screen accurate but I hope close enough.

I guess my first question would be: Is the shape passable? Not that I can do much about that at this point. I will be posting more pics and questions (that I can't find the answer to on the vast board) as I go along. Thanks in advance for any help.

I would say that so far the shape is great for ROTJ but the ESB has a bit of a flare. And before painting it you should definately fill the trademarks in the back. I've seen alot of DPs that are really amazing. If you complete this and paint this really accurate, then it will be 501st acceptable.

Thanks for the input, a ROTJ would be nice. Any cheap suggestions on a filler for the logo's?

To fill in the logos you might want to try just a tad of bondo. Its an automotive putty that is used to fill holes/cracks in fiberglass or other materials. Just slab a bit of that over the logo, let it semi-dry, then sand it down.

Although, I'm not sure how bondo will react with your base coat....you might have to re-prime it first.

bondo spot putty. u can get a tube at walmart for like 5-7 bucks. just be sure to really let it cure before sanding. overnight should work. otherwise it'll be like sanding clay.

Ok, had most of the paint finished and then the OCD kicked in. I sanded everything off, for the 2nd time, and started over. I filled the logos in with mightyputty type stuff from WalMart and sanded them down with 60 grit then 220 grit. 2 coats of hammered aluminium have been applied, after 3 coats of primer.

Now I'm a little sketchy on ROTJ damage, I have ref pics but stencils would be nice. Any ideas? Remember OCD.

Bought some Lark Dark Grey and Grime Black today, hope to get some more painting done. Here is the back of the bucket so far with filled in logos.

Update... The dome is finished to my liking. It won't be acceptable to any club but I'm diggin' it. Masked off the damage, had fun with some grimey black, and went to town with the xacto. And yes, there is only 15 kill strips. 3 coats of matte clear coat and whats done is done, time to move on to the next section. Whatever that may be.
