Painting Whoahs!

I am trying to paint my first bucket and i am trying the layered technique. What are some of the methods you guys use in this way. Do you paint on the layers and use something to scratch the colors off till you get silver or what?

To get the paint peel and scratch effects, I believe you will have to use a mixture of techniques.

Paint layering is my preference.

A lot of people around here use a liquid latex masking fluid, called Winsor & Newton's liquid mask.

I recommend you take some time and read some of the threads in the helmet forum. You can find a lot of useful techniques and information. For example, here's a great recent paint walkthrough:

For those who has not use liquid masking fluid before, you should read the instructions of the product. Some do not recommend leaving the mask on the surface for more than 3 days....just my 2c when you use masking fluid.:cheers

Also, if the surface paint dries and harden too much, you may have a hard time removing the mask. Especially true for lacquer paints.

or there's the good old standby's. toothpaste or mustard. i prefer toothpaste because on the paint that i use the mustard makes the silver look not very silver. also, i like the smell of mint over mustard. and you can get a little more delicate with toothpaste because you don't really need to glop it on as thick to protect the layers.

but after you've got all your layers on, you can put the helmet under hot water and rub it off to reveal the layers of color. a few word of caution though: one, if you get on a roll and put down all your layers in a short period of time, wait at least 2 hours before pulling your reveal. the paint needs some time to dry or you'll pull off a lot more than just the masked areas. second, don't go too slow with the process. don't let the mask sit too long. once you start the project you should try to have it done in a week at the most, otherwise the toothpaste (or mustard) will harden up too much and be a real pain to remove after you have all the colors on the bucket.

Sounds interesting:cheers What type of paint do you use for this method? e.g. enamel, lacquer or acyrlic??

I used regular latex. The W&N appears to be just watered down latex. I had great results using mine that I already had and you should too. Best of luck!

i'm a rattlecan guy. acrylics, enamels, whatever. check out AFFo$ stickied thread at the top of the helmet section
