original prop helmet straps

Just a quick question , anyone actually know what was used on the original move made Fett helmet to hold it on his head?

Just curious to see what they used to keep it in place etc? I see a lot of creative ideas on here but wondered what worked for them.

You can see some of the attachments in the PP3 gallery:

Hey! the helmet liners were different depending on the helmet you are talking about. The straps came from a vintage police riot helmet. The chin cup (with the "made in England") is on the easier end to find, but finding the correct straps is a pain. specially if you are looking at the evilbay.

Some serious archiving there, every angle you could need. I doubt I would be able to get hold of that riot helmet now ha.. its also amazing to see how uneven the helmet actually is, very wonky looking...

intwenothor Well, the only reason I have any doubt about the helmet liners in all the buckets is because of the bonnet. That thing looks too bulky to fit with the liner too. It was padded and the pp2 helmet doesnt have a liner in it now. I think it would be a possibility that the bonnet was the helmet liner and the chin cup was used as it was intended. Not that any of this matters if you are making a screen accurate helmet though. we know for a fact there was a liner in the ESB, and one of the Rotj helmets had foam. Technically the other interiors as they were, or as they are now are irrelevant. But I do agree with you, they may have all started with the same type of liner. Or even may have all had the same liner and it was just moved between them... I also picked up one of those old rock climbing helmets, I think it's dead on accurate. But mine has the wrong strapping. So I'll have to replace it. :/

The strapping is the biggest issue. It'll not be difficult to replace but getting exactly the right strapping on the found helmet might be tough although I have seen them.

The ROTJ started with the proper climbing helmet cradle. There's a picture in the gallery and it is there clear as day. When it got swapped with the foam I have no idea but if the cradle was hot glued in as appears the case with the ESB I can see it falling out easily; taping some foam in would be a lot easier than adding more glue to the necessary eight anchor points the proper cradle requires.

The ANH helmets for other characters started with simple foam in them.
The ROTJ Fett helmet started out as a tour helmet like the PP2 and "Sandy" tour helmets.
During the time of ESB I cannot prove that the suspension was not added to the ESB Fett helmet but I doubt it because the ROTJ and other tour helmets did not receive this treatment, nor did the PP3 which was the backup ESB helmet.
During the time of ROTJ many of the existing Star Wars helmets had the suspension installed as well as all the new stormtrooper helmets.
Therefore it is my strong belief that the ROTJ helmet may have had it added for ROTJ filming but certainly not before then. The ESB probably had it added at the same time since it was part of the Fett stuff being looked at for reuse.

And I promise it can't fall out without leaving glue in helmets and there is none in any of the ones that don't have the liner

Yes but there is also a pic of the helmet with the strapping so are you saying there was foam padding originally that was removed and replaced with the strapping and the that the strapping was replaced with foam again?

No. The foam was replaced with the strapping as expressed in my previous posts.
What picture do you believe shows the ROTJ helmet with the suspension pre or even during filming ROTJ?

I do not know if we retain the exact dates.
The pre ROTJ filming picture was taken by Heilman and could have been taken anytime between '79 and '82 I suppose but I may be able to get you an exact date.
The archive picture was taken when Don Bies was the archivist in the 90's. Again I can probably get the exact date or ask Don but I don't know if it makes it huge difference when Exactly it was taken.
