One last wafer thin ESB paint job...
Tweaked colour list: (20/5/10)
1. L/H ear: red 60, grey 28+64 (1:1), green 159+78 (1:1) weathering splatter brown 93 on front surface. Ear decal white 34.
2. R/H ear: silver 11, grey 79, sand 94
3. Back panels grey 147, silver 11, grey 106, beige 28 ( mist with beige 103 ), green 76+96 (1:1) weather green with wire wool as per ref pics and light shading with dark grey 32.
4. Dome and lower cheeks grey 147, silver 11, grey 79 and green 78.
5. Mandibles and trim: grey 147, silver 11, grey 106, purple 73+104 (1:1), red 60, red 73.
6. weathering with brown 93 around trim and arrows, shading with grey 32 along edge of lower cheeks.
7. splatters with brown 62, beige 103, grey 79.
8. scuffs brown and white caran dache pencil.
9. scuffs by kill stripes layer with black 33 and brown 62 with white spirit.
I thought i would document the process again as i try to improve on the last one. I've planned a couple of tweaks to the techniques and colours. The helmet has a white gel coat which will be scratched back to in certain areas, a thin grey primer coat and the first layer, the light grey Humbrol 147, which is actually blue/green/grey...
1. thin coat of grey primer
2. light grey base coat 147

Re: One last wafer thin ESB paint job...
Same here ... and now that I have one of your outstanding helmets ... I have to watch the progress ...
I just need the list of colors (humbrol) you use for your helmet ... (ESB) ... :-)
Would you be so kind to post a list of your colors for the helmet?
Thanks my friend!

No way Darren, I have to tell ya, it can only be done with tea, coffee and beer ... :D
Better get used to one of them :b
I guess, I´ll try it with all three ... starting with a tea, after step 25 I switch over to coffee and when it´s done ... I´ll have a beer ... or two ... or ... :drool
Thanks for this complete list with all the steps and colors Garrett!:cheering

3. mask entire helmet except L/H ear spray red 60
4. liquid mask red damage spray grey 28
I used a water soluble white pencil to roughly outline the next layer detail, i've done this to ensure the scale of the layer is as accurate as possible. I also peeled back the liquid mask in areas with a compass point to create sharper detail where needed before painting.

tip: use keyslots to determine scale and position of damage. If the light grey is not surrounded by silver, leave the liquid mask on!

Hi Mr Fettler,
when you state (6. green 78+159) are you mixing the colours together or are you misting one colour over the other with the airbrush?
I've seen you state this before but never quite understood what you meant.
Jason

Hi Jason those colours are mixed before going through the airbrush...

My same question - how do you keep it so sharp ? peel off at the just the right time as the paint sets up ? :?

I think its a combination of the way the liquid mask adheres to the metallic silver, almost with a fine ragged edge and the thickness of the next coat, that and keeping the detail as small as possible and even omitting parts that are too fine; these areas can be scratched in later. I left the grey layer 12 hours before the mask came off, this also played a part...
-

16. liquid mask light grey, silver and mid grey.
17. airbrush grey 28
18 mist beige 103
I 've always had mixed feelings about the 'creaminess' of the beige layer, its difficult to gauge as the green layer seems to reduce its tone. I've misted 103 on top of 28 so if needed i can use wire wool to buff the colour back slightly...
tip: watch out for the mid grey detail UNDER the green layer, Darth Nickel and myself have been working on a translucent green mix for the next layer...;)
-
Re: One last wafer thin ESB paint job...
Another FINE layer TF.
The Green is going to be interesting. I only HOPE mine will come out as nice as yours. It should be a very cool result.

21. liquid mask silver, grey and beige areas
22. spray 76 and 96 mixed 1:1
tip: try to keep this layer slightly thinner so the grey and beige show through in certain areas!
I went slightly too heavy with the paint, so the grey i was hoping would show through this layer is not really visible, when totally dry a buff with 0000 wire wool may work and will also tone down colour intensity...
PS if you spot any detail i missed please keep it to yourself as i'm nursing a migrane from staring at the back of this helmet for 2 weeks...:D
PPS thanks to Darth_Nickel for helping me with the colour mix...:thumbsup

simply amazing TF. The detail is well... amazing. I love the shot next to the screen with the actual bucket. I mean come on man... that is some SICK stuff. Hats off.
I'm glad I could help in any little way I did. It's the least I could do for all you have done for me. The thanks go to you.

24. mask entire helmet except R/H ear pieces. Spray R/H ear pieces silver no. 11

27. remove liquid mask, liquid mask silver and grey damage, airbrush sand no. 93.
28. draw on in pencil black arch and white half arch on outer cap, trace the white arch onto a piece of masking tape, cut the white arch out with sharp knife.
29. liquid mask black arch, airbrush white no. 34.
30. apply masking tape half arch, airbrush satin black no. 85.
31. using thin strips of masking tape, mask the nine stripes below black arch, brush on satin black no. 85.
tip: keep silver liquid masking to an absolute minimum, detail can be scratched through the following layers with a compass point...:thumbsup

Garret, just to know, after every layer that you apply, do you do something on it? I say that because, maybe, if you mask the painted area it will peel off...

The Humbrol enamel paints seem quite tuff ( they adhere to previous coats 100% ) so liquid mask or tape will not lift the paint between layers...

OK, I'm going to ask a silly question, because that's what I do best. :) Are you using a white pencil in this entire process? What kind of pencil is a white pencil and what kind of liquid masking do you suggest?
Thanks for this thread! STICKY! STICKY! STICKY!

Thanks. The white pencil is water soluble and comes in those colour pencil sets, i find it easier to outline the detail with on the darker colours ie greys, red etc. The best liquid mask i've found is Humbrol maskol...
-
Re: One last wafer thin ESB paint job...
Just amazing absolutely amazing, I love how this is coming along and it should be a sticky for sure.
-
Re: One last wafer thin ESB paint job...
I think I have your liquid masking technique down, but I just want to clarify. You spray color 1, then mask out what you want to keep for color 1, spray color 2, remove the original mask, and then mask color 1 and 2 together? Do you remove the original mask on color 1 so you can gauge the masking of color 2 more accurately??
THANKS!!
Kody
-
Re: One last wafer thin ESB paint job...
Thats pretty much the technique, although some of the masking is left on in certain areas ie the base grey around the dent which is removed after the powder burn is added after the grey and green layers...
-
Re: One last wafer thin ESB paint job...
Thanks for the info. Also, do you usually thin 2 parts paint to one part thinner? How much paint does it ususally take you to do one full bucket? As in number of 14mL tins for the most used paint??
Thanks,
Kody
