    OK started my first bucket

Hi everyone, I'm kind of new here, been lurking 4 a long time, then a few post's, now I'll put my $ where my mouth is... I have started my first bucket, it's gonna be a custom Metalic black dome, Dark purple mandables, silver cheeks, and maybe some really dark red. I used WOF's AWESOME templates, and FREE priority mail envelopes (thanks USPS), a lot of tape, and now began to 'glass it. So, here's a few progress pics... been working on this for about 2-3 weeks, should finish in another 2-3 before painting. Tell me what you think.

Dremel died while cutting out the visor. Gonna finish cutting in a couple of hours then glass the edges of visor and interior, should be done with glassing today, and start bondo tomorrow.

gonna make 1 for my 8 yr. old son too, I guess using WOF templates @ 80% size should work. Headed to pick him up from school right now, then off to wal*mart for Bondo and sandpaper... Anyone know if I can just use standard primer.... Never mind, it's like painting a car repair (isn't that what bondo is for ?!?! lol) I'll post pics of my trash can armor a little later today too.

    Looks great!!!

I've fiberglassed onto sintra after roughing up the surface and it stick fine...I'd just take some course sand paper to the armour, then glass it.

Also, totally go with the EL! I got mine from www.thatscoolwire.com. It's the 0.9mm kit (Item#WY-GH-86-3V). It's like $12 with shipping, I think...

Hope that helps! Keep up the great work!!!

AAARRRGH Disaster strikes.............. It hit the floor from like 4 feet...
Cracked the bondo on all sides around the T-Visor. Pics arent that good. The fiberglass didn't crack, I can just sand the bondo down to the glass around the visor and do it again. had to put the armor update too, this is just a color test, haven't glassed it yet.

Re: OK started my first bucket

ok a little more... I painted it so I could sand to see how bad my bondo job is... Of course I did more bondo to fill in low spots, and added left ear which needs lots of work. You can see where I have marked the battle damage ( which were where the cracks happened when it dropped to the floor ), and my dent. My Mando is an older guy who has seen a lot of poodoo.

Re: OK started my first bucket

    Adonian,

    1. Your work is awesome!!! Great idea to use the cracked area as battle damage.

    2. (this is part of your post on my helmet thread) "I'm gonna use red EL on my visor, and hopefully superbright LED lights like yours if you don't mind." OF COURSE I DON'T MIND!!! That is, as long as you post pics

    3. You mentioned something about an RF...vertical ones are cool, but tend to get in the way; I'd go with a curved one. Since I build my bucket I've been planning on designing one and putting it on, but haven't got around to it (I think my problem is called real life ) Anyways, I'd try a curved RF. If I get around to drafting a curved RF, I'll PM you the design if you want.

    Keep up the awesome work!!!

Ya know I got the same problem (real life) but I got the wife to take the kids to her mom's house, so I have some time to work today, just glassed the right ear caps, gonna use a curved flat piece of cardboard attached to the stalk as a Range Finder and conform it to the shape of the bucket, you'll see, and of course I will put up pics of the lights (hope they help me see in the dark

Very nice work. After creating the papercraft, did you bondo it off the bat or did you give it a coat of glass first?

Re: OK started my first bucket

I glassed the outside first, then bondo, gonna also glass the inside when done before putting padding. I fit inside the bucket with my glasses, but just barely, so gonna strategically pad and felt coat the interior, of course gotta leave space inside for batteries, fans, and a microphone... Gonna try to get the right ear cap on today, because tomorrow is a Disneyland day, then Monday I start a new job so wont have time (why is there never time for fun, always work work work).. I'll try to get a few more pics up later today.
edit... no time for right ear cap today

not done yet, about 70-80%, I got the Right ear on, just need to make the RF, install the visor, finish the final bondo, then prime and paint. I'm off tomorrow, so I should have the smoothing and final bondo done. I'll post another pic or 2 tomorrow.

Okay, I have a small update. I did another layer of bondo, just need to get the mandable a little thicker and smoother on the right side. I got the right lower ear on, and the top ear for the RF, gotta drill for the RF hole, and make a curved RF.

Re: OK started my first bucket

Update: Haven't had much time (if any) but I think I have finished the bondo work, and have put a first color layer, and have done a little battle damage. I noticed that the mandibles are starting to warp out :o at the top of the "T", I will probabley have to do some rubberband work when I put the inner coating of resin. The opening is a little too much at the top so the red visor I have is a little narrow, but I will make it fit. 8)
Edit, I see where i forgot to paint around the eyes, down infront of the ears, and I didn't paint behind the ears and around the "stripe" around the back. Don't worry, I'll get that part right, I just still need the RF and Key slots, I'm thinking of custom key slots too, anyone got any ideas they'd like to see? I'm gonna add a 'com box' with an antenna from one of my dead wifi cards somewhere on it too.

    Another minior update.
Got the grey area on the cheek bones, still need to make the RF, I should be able to start that tomorrow. How do I make these pic's smaller? They're pretty darn big.
Edit: I figured out how to make 'em smaller, so these will be the last ones that are HUGE.

Wow, nice job from such humble beginnings! Just thinking about all the sanding makes me wince!

I've always thought that a slash or two across a helmet or even a blaster scorch was always a cool touch but I'm always torn whether it should or shouldn't go across the visor. I've always thought that if it goes across the visor there should be some sort of damage to the visor too, kinda like Robocop when he gets shot by ED-209 and you can see through the bullet hole of his visor-type thing, or some other sort of scorch-type damage.

    Keep on with the updates.

Sanding is a REAL PAIN IN THE butt, but layer after layer of bondo and it's still a little warped in the dome (thus the damage to hide imperfections), as for the claw marks across the visor, I may put a clear acrylic in first and damage that, then put the red acrylic behind the clear.

I started to curve my stalk for the RF which I think will be flat and wide along the length of the stalk (cant describe, but will post pic tonight of progress in an edit of this post so I dont artifically bump my own thread and make 'The Dent' mad:thumbup)

Re: OK started my first bucket

Hey Wolf...I got your pic to save then opened it in paint, I like the solid black, the green visor can be found on fleabay from the same seller that I got my red one.
Okay, these are pics of what I put together for my RF, it's the lcd from a chinese ipod that broke (go fig ) and the circuit board if from an older RF modulator. I plan on just putting it into wet resin and then sanding it to the shape I need, I dont need it to be perfectly clear like acrylic. The other pics here show how I am fixing the warping of the t-visor. I glassed in at the warp, then put bondo inside, I only have 1 side done, and hope to have the other side done in a day or 2 (New job, crazy hours no fixed schedule yet) I hope this will keep it from warping again so I can finally put in the red visor I have sitting around. I hope these are little smaller...>>>

Re: OK started my first bucket

it's a good idea using a ready made helmet, my dome is a little bumpy. I saw a guy who actually used a sieve (strainer) for his dome, it came out XLNT.

You should use fiberglass and resin. I used glass cut using the template so I could lay it around the face and back, and just cut strips for the dome, it drys REALLY HARD, then put a thin layer of bondo, sand, more bondo, more sanding, a little more bondo for final shaping, then spot filler and filler primer, then paint, then sanding, then more paint etc etc etc
take your time, dont rush, that's what happened to my visor, that's why I needed to glass it from the inside... (see above pics for visual aide of warpage)

And before I put in the red visor, I need to get a red EL wire to surround the ENTIRE visor up, around, over and down agian I really hope to get more done soon (Xmas and a new job right now are really tossing a monkey wrench into the works) but right now, I just got off work, and I need a drink

Have you ordered the EL wire yet? I can't wait to see it with that and the visor in!!!
Got about $4.00 left in the bank But I get paid Friday (full 40 hours finally) So I will order it then, I am off tomorrow so I hope to have the rest of the interior glassed and bondo'd (if thats a word) I will need to get my hands on some mirror tint to make the red visor reflective before I install it because you'd be able to see my ugly face behind it :o . Then I need to find a way to put the LED's for lighting up the night on Halloween next year (dont wanna get hit by a car).

Ok, this is what it is almost gonna look like with the visor, just need some weathering, and to put mirror tint on the visor, and the el which arrived today. I am still trying to find a way to make a curved RF.

Minor update, here is some of the weathering, if you look closely at the back you can see a copper I used.
I sprayed paint onto a sponge, wiped it off, then rubbed.
    Tell me what you think.

Re: OK started my first bucket

Quick question, not sure if this is the right Thread, but I couldn't find another more specific. I am looking to use a MR for trooping, but I have heard some guys on here mention that I should be careful with the paint when fixing the "pinch".

Does anyone know if the paint job on a MR will stand up to moderate trooping for events with the 501st - if I'm careful with him.

    Regards,

I believe that thread may be able to help, he fixed his MR pinch, and it looks really good, his tutorial is exceptional, my thread is from WOF template and bieleve it or not express mail envelopes, fiberglass resin and bondo.

    Sorry A'den,

I promise I will get more done soon, I had to put the nose into the books to study for a Dantes test (no time for school, so I am taking college tests outside school for my BSN).

I have painted some colors onto my chest pieces, I'll post tonight, I will work on bucket when I get the visor mirrored.

I tried to get the EL put in first, but the wifeys hot melt gun broke (don't teller her)

    EDIT:
Added pics of armor in begining stages, this is only the chest, belly and jewel, I still have the trash can for the pauldrons collar, shins, thighs, and if I can, the upper arms.
You can see multiple colors, there are about 6 layers of color.
Silver, black, copper, red/blue (color change paint).
I plan on weathering the poop out of it, and adding the matching scratches and dents that go along with the bucket.

    Any comments?

Your armor is awesome & I love the color of paint. What are you making the armor from? We're just getting started & need to be ready by the beginning of July for the SDCC. We already have the helmets; hubby's is an actual MS1 Helmet & mine is a scratch rebuild between DP 95/96 and MS1 helmets. We need as much help as possible & any info you can give would be greatly appreciated.

O.K. I know this is kind of an old thread, but if you go to a local sign shop, you can ask for extra scrap sintra, and they'll give it to you.
