*OFFICIAL INTEREST THREAD* for Spideyfett/Evan4218 Machined Metal Ears

Looks like we are on track for doing a run of machined aluminum ears with a stalk as well. This thread is meant to be an interest only thread to show us how many people would be willing to possibly commit to this run.

The time table is about 4 weeks from the placement of the order with our machinist. We should have a prototype and picture of the ears and stalk both on and off the helmet fairly soon. But we want to make sure there is at least enough interest for the ears to even do the run since we will need around 30 people to do this.

Details:
A full set of Boba Fett Ears matching the ones made for the new FPH helmet in machined aluminum metal with screws and tapped for easy installation and an accurate hallow stalk matching the one used on screen. That will be 5 pieces total.

Price:
For all 5 pieces we are looking at a total of $245 a set.

What helmets will this ear fit?
The ears will fit most of the helmets out there with a tad bit of modification on the helmet. I think mystery helmets will work fine with the ears, I.E. the Marrow Sun, Sgnt Fang, the Sky Gunbro, and the Boba Maker. They should also work with limited moding on the MSH1 and 2. I will post base measurements of what the size of the fitting area will be tonight or tomorrow followed by a printable PDF that you can trim out and place on your helmet to see what the extent of the mods that you will need to make, if any to fit on your bucket.

How will the run be handled?
This is the interest thread for it... based on your posting (AND PLEASE POST YOUR INTEREST if you just PM me that can be lost of forgotten and I don't want to miss anyone... so please POST IN THIS THREAD IF YOU ARE SERIOUS! We will not pay to get the prototypes till we can see if there are enough to do this!

Why would I want metal ears?
Both the ESB and ROTJ hero helmets used metal ears. Its more obvious on the ROTJ as that version dosnt have painted ears, just dirty metal. But if you want clean, accurate ears, this is the upgrade to end all upgrades!

If I miss out on this run will there be another chance down the road?
Nope, we will do no more runs beyond this one... this is it!!! Get them now, get two if you want 2 sets and that will be it. This run is being done AT COST to benefit the board and this is as cheap as it gets. I dont see any other opportunity's down the road for this and I for one have been waiting 2 years for this chance! If you can convince your self to get a metal gauntlet rocket then for goodness sakes, you have no reason not to go for this run!

Once I pay, how long before I get my ears and stalk?
Should be about 4 weeks from payment to delivery. Each set will include insurance and a tracking number... all will be PMed to each person on the run.

I will be posting a interest thread on the RPF as well as we need as many as possible. 30 people to be exact to make this happen. We will be shelling out a fair sum of cash to get this going so we have a prototype and we have to pay for a custom cutting bit for the machinist as well thus the interest thread without pictures. Once this thread starts moving we will pay our shop to start on the ears and should have them with in a week or so to post up pics for everyone. Trust me they will be well worth it!

FINALLY, super clean, crisp ear assemblies, where the silver weathering, will not just be mere silver paint, but actual metal showing through! I had a hand in doing the Phase 1 Mechanical Drawings based off all the High-Res photos that the "3 Amigos" (SpideyFett, Evan4218 & Darth Miller) took of the actual Boba helmet while @ CIV, so you guys will be assured of some extreme accuracy and detailing.

I've been anxiously awaiting this to happen in some shape or form, by one member or another for some time now, well it now looks like the wait is finally over! :cheering

I know what you mean... I don't know where I am coming up with the cash for my set but I gotta... this isn't like some of the other metal peice runs that will happen again in 6 months or a year... this was a big pain to pull together and for the machinist as well so this is one of those once in a life time kind of things.

Well, weather or not this run happens will be based on if we feel enough people post interest between now and sunday night in this thread and the one on the RPF. Based on that you guys will have the better part of a few weeks before we would start taking payments and we would leave the window for taking payments open for about a week or so. So realistically you wouldn't have to cough anything up till early October. Sadly none of us can finance the thousands of dollars this run is going to take and then just sell the extras later. So far things are looking good for it not even being 24 hours.

We have 11 sets confirmed thus far... so were almost half way there already. WOO HOO!

Just to let you guys know... if we don't get thirty its still a go, but the price will go up a tad... how much I am not sure but it has to be enough to make it worth the machinists wile.

Just an update... we have paid our metal guy for the prototypes and he has his new drill bit so things are moving along nicely. As soon as I have them in hand I will post pics of them both on and off helmets that I have access to and post the ear placement size PDF I promised.

Here is a pic of what I am basing the stalk construction on. This is 1 of 2 versions we are offering. If you dont want it this way (with the side panel) then you can just have a drilled out stalk.

Here are the first pictures from the shop. These are the first prototypes... The stalks I would consider final... in the version with out the panel but tapped with a spot for the wires to come out. This should be the most popular version. He also has the inner ear cap figured out. He will tweak the placement of the screw holes and it will have stainless steel pins for lining up the outer cap to the inner cap along with a magnet to hold it on.

Let me know what you guys think so far! Keep in mind these are fresh cut and have not been sand blasted yet. So its really happening now!!! :)

Justin, something just came to mind: is the stalk actually screwed into the inner ear piece? If so, how difficult is it to move it up and down?

Ah I cant resist anymore, please add me to the list!!!!

It is bolted to the helmet. The hole that the screw passes through in the inner RF Earcap isnt threaded so by loosening the bolt you can easily move the stalk up and down or just have a servo head pass through that hole and into the stalk to allow it to move that way.

I will post measurements of those holes as soon as I can so you can know the size of that hole.

These earcaps will come with screws as well as a set of rare earth magnets. The outer earcap is held on with a with a rare earth magnet and is mounted using 2 stainless steel pegs. It scews into the helmet using 3 small screws.

Here's my interest post. I'm serious.

Please PM me. I'm still learning about Fett helmets and would love a recommendation of an ESB range finder that's not only compatable but will justify the stalk so I can get some power to whatever lighting system is in the recommended RF.

When we first looked into doing machined ears we got quotes for over 700$ PLUS just for ONE SET only..!!!:doh
So as Justin said this is a heck of a deal to get a full set of Ears and a hollow aluminum stalk for 200$....:suprise

We should have a complete set (prototypes) by wednesday... and Pictures on the FPH by this weekend...

and yes these are 100% FP ears (designed by Fettpride for the new FPH), with a little help from some friends of coarse. ;)

Here is a small update... he is almost done with the left ear. Just has to cut the bottom. This is a better pic of the stalk now with a screw hole that is accurate and has the magnet and pegs in it.

I just got back from the machine shop with evan4218 and SpideyFett. These parts look incredible! Very clean, and they fit the FPH like a glove. I am now more impressed having seen them in person.

If your refering to the switch like the one mrgr8tness put in his in the small area on the right side of the inside top right ear cap then no. I dont belive that to be on the real one... as I have never seen evidence of it on the real thing... :)

As promised today was D-day for our hired machinist....and Let me just say, WOW :suprise...he really came through for us.

We (Me, Evan4218, and Batninja) made the trip early this morning to visit with the Machinist and view the first two prototypes of the finished ears and RF stalk assembly.... I think from the moment I saw them I was blown out of the water and almost fainted at the first site of them:suprise, mainly because the amount craftsmanship and professionalism that was put into these by our machinist was just amazing!!!! They really made us all speechless.......I think we all had a tear in our eye. :cry

Before I post the pics (taken by Evan4218 ) I want to reiterate that these are the first "prototype" ears....and we have already worked with our machinist to get correct modifications done...all be it very little was needed in terms of any mods... TRUST ME....they're perfect as is;)....
at this point we were just happy that we got to bring these babies home today!!:cheering


Rather than post the run information (costs) which will come later tonight, I want this post to be simply about the pictures.... So we can all see them mounted on the new FPH, which these ears are made for...but not limited to.

Final assembly will come with a TEMPLATE to ensure you drill the holes correctly to mount your ears properly.:thumbsup

Details:

1. All the holes you see have threaded holes drilled, meaning you can literally screw the bolt in from the front side and not have to worry about attaching a nut on the backside/inside of the helmet, (nut attachment though is still recommended)......
The entire kit will include all of the hardware needed to mount your own ears.(slight modifications are being made to the placement of the threaded connection holes)

2. The Ear Cap (my favorite part) will come with a pegged fitting with Magnet attachment :suprise, as you can see from the pics....
Magnets will come with the kit and are on BOTH the RF housing base and the Ear Cap. And trust me this ear cap will NOT fall off....plus the pegs are 100% steel, for added strength. :thumbsup

3. The Left Ear Piece , As you can see in the pics the depth of the gap in the ear piece is not as deep as it should be:thumbsd....a simple mod on that will be in the final product.... with few additional mods here and there.

4. Hollow Range Finder Stalk, right now the kit will include a hollow rangefinder stalk....but there are TWO versions........
a. one where there is simply a hole drilled all the way through (most Popular version)
b. and a second version where there is a plate-covering that will need to be glued on (more accurate, and according to Braks may be simply a stunt version stalk, pics posted above by Evan4218 on post # 22)

Another thing I noticed is, on the bottom piece of the ear cap, theres a small flat edge that looks like it's not on the prototype. It looks like the angled slope on the real deal would of gone all the way to the back, bottom edge of the ear base, but the edge was just chopped off. Just curious if any of you guys noticed this?:)

and yes, we saw allot of little things like this...and most of them have been fixed and made aware to the machinest.....most are minor fixes......a simple measurement change in the program should fix allot of these.

I think allot has to do with the angle in which the pictures were taken aswell...we'll post straighter on angles soon....just really haven't had time.

The cutout I put in mine is similar to the one RS and SS built into the ears they were making, which Lee said was accurate to the original. I thought I saw a picture once, but not sure. I put mine in before even knowing, I was torn between going micro-switch or mercury switch for a while. I asked for advice here quite a while back, and the majority was saying micro-switch. So I cut a spot out for the microswitch. The fact that it was so similar to the ones RS and SS put out, and possibly the original, is pure coincidence:thumbsup It was kind of cool when I saw them come out, I was like awesome, maybe I stumbled accurate accidentally:lol Anyways, these aluminum ears are frickin sweet:drool And aluminum hollow stalk:suprise Man, wish I had the $$ right now:cheers

yeah I haven't seen a picture of that either. That may be on the new Braks ref CD?? if so I need to get one of those, cause that would be really cool to see a picture of that on the real thing....:thumbsup
