    Apr 24, 2015, 6:01 PM - Off the shelf helmet? #1

Hi, I just signed up to ask this question. I've looked at the wiki, and read through a number of threads here and elsewhere. I'm sure what I'm about to ask has been answered a million times already, but I lacked the search skills to turn up the answer.

I'm looking for an "off the shelf" helmet, something I can buy and wear with little effort. I realize most people here are looking to be as accurate as possible, but that is not me.

    - I do not have the skills to buy a kit to make my own helmet or to improve an off the shelf helmet
    - My standards aren't that high, but I want something that looks better than the Rubies helmet or the Hasbro talking helmet.
    - I don't care which movie the helmet most resembles
    - Needs to fit an adult head and can be worn for a few hours at a time

This will be worn maybe 2 or 3 times a year, and not as part of a full costume.

From what I've found, I think an old Don Post helmet might be my best bet? Is there something else out there that I should consider? I'm not familiar with all the different varieties and variations that might be out there. Any help would be greatly appreciated, including links to helmet comparisons or threads where similar questions have been answered.

    Thanks for your time.

You can get a don post helmet on flebay, or something else pretty cheap. I have seen a few helmets like that for the 80 to 90$ range ocassionally.

If you do go the Don Post route, the Don Post 95 was a much better shape than the other DPs available. You'll more than likely be buying a used one. There's one on ebay right now with 5 days left for $60. Just search "STAR WARS BOBA FETT REPLICA Helmet 1995 DON POST MASK authentic collector prop" I'd post a link but it's against forum rules as it is not my listing. Compare the shape to the other DPs out there, and it looks much better. The DP95 had a rounded top on the helmet and a rounded shape in general, as it should. The later DPs (DP98's I think) had that boxy, ovular look them- no Bueno.
I had a DP95 about 12 years ago (briefly) for my first fett. It was a great entry/novice helmet for me at the time. If youre ever looking to upgrade, just come on back to the site here, and we'll get you straightened out.

Thanks for the replies guys, a few more questions if you don't mind.
    - I believe the DP95 comes in regular and deluxe. Is the difference just the better paint job?
    - As someone who has yet to train my eye to pick out the differences, is there an easy giveaway to look for to tell a 95 from a later DP? Something that is hard to overlook? EDIT: I think I answered this. Looks like the date is stamped into the helmet for the year of production.
    - What would be the next step above a Don Post quality wise?

My 95DP is stamped with the year on the inside...which isn't noticeable with online sales.

The next step up in regards to a readily available helmet would be the master replicas helmet.

The dp deluxe is a fiberglass that, due to it's rarity, would cost you about as much as buying a fettpride helmet and having it painted by a tdh member, and only be a fraction of the quality and accuracy.

Depending on your price range, you may want to keep you eyes peeled in the cargo hold for someone unloading a helmet.

I'm in the same boat. I'm wondering how good or bad the rubies supreme helmet looks with a repaint and darkened visor

I ended up getting that Don Post helmet off ebay. The good news is, if I decide to use something else later, I should be able to get most of my money back.

I ended up snagging the Don Post from eBay. A couple questions:

    1. The "antenna" is really lose when in the up position, any way to tighten it?
    2. What sort of glue should I use to attach either foam or hard hat liner to the inside?
    3. The material on the inside is sticky in places. Should I spray coat it with anything to improve longevity?

Looking to cosplay this at the night market this weekend.

I dont think there's a way to tighten up the stalk without removing the cap. If you remove the cap, you'll have to find a way to reattach it. As far as a foam liner a hot glue gun works fine. A helmet liner will require a stronger adhesive.
If the helmet is sticky and you plan on gluing something into it, make sure you dont try to attach a glue to whatever you choose to spray. If you use a foam liner, you shouldnt need spray anything inside to cover the tackiness.
