Not your average ROTJ scratch build

Well I've now done the mandibles and was able to get the rest of the colors I need so hopefully I won't need to be buying anything else for this bucket.

Same process as the upper cheeks. I masked off the silver damage and then painted the grey layer. After that was dry I peeled off the mask, then masked the silver and grey damage and painted the red. After the last coat dried I peeled off the mask again.

I'm pretty happy with it overall. A few mistakes here and there, but when I take a step back and look at the helmet as a whole I'm pleased.

I think next I will probably do the back panel of the helmet. Saving the dome and cheeks for last.

I'll get to it tonight hopefully

Now it's back to my job for the next 7 hours! :(

I always like to think that if it looks good in pictures, it works. Plus the layman won't know the difference up close, and I'm not sure how many of us TDHers there are too even run into!

Helmet looks great, though! Looking forward to the rest.

Thanks a lot! Yeah I'm hoping nobody who knows what they're doing sees it up close. Haha I don't even like it up close, but from far away its passable so far.

The dome and back are next and that's what I'm worried about! :)

Btw just saw you're jet pack build. Amazing

Thank you, I appreciate it! A bucket seems like a much bigger challenge, so many more particulars to get just right.

Okay back panel time

First the silver damage

When looking at the back damage it looked like there was a gradient in the grey damage. I wasn't sure how to reproduce this, so after I painted the grey I added some light green to parts before I masked the grey.

Eh... It's alright

Well that's it for now. Next I'll do the ears and start on the dome and cheeks.
Good news is that I have finally got some transfer paper coming tomorrow so I'm gonna attempt to use that for the dome and cheeks. Never used it before so hope all goes well.

Quick update.

So while waiting to get my transfer paper in I decided to do the ears. I did the right ear first, but I had an issue. When painting it the dark grey wasn't really adhering to the silver very well. I did my best to fix it but it's a little wonky.

For some reason it adhered just fine to the earcap. I tried to fix it as best I could and then let it dry and removed the mask, but I forgot to take a picture and the helmet is masked off so it'll have to wait. Here is how the right earcap turned out

The left ear went a lot smoother fortunately.

I got my transfer paper in and decided to start on the cheeks to get used to using the stuff and then I'll move onto the dome last since it seems the most challenging.

First step was to trace the stencils on

(You can kind of see the left ear in this picture)

Then the mask.

Then my light green layer

After a day or two for the last coat to dry, I got to remove the mask

Wow, it looks a lot better than when I free handed the damage lol
I'll have to see how it turns out once all the layers are done.

That's it for this update.

Next I have the grey layer, dark green layer, and then finally the main green layer

As usual, if anyone sees something I did wrong or could improve on next time feel free to let me know

Hey got the cheeks all done. Pretty stoked. Just the dome next!

Last layer!

And the reveal...

I hope I did the painting right.

Now I'm gonna try to make this dome thing look somewhat presentable! Kind of excited to finish so I'll have to fight off the urge to rush it!

Okay well I'm sitting here bored at work with nothing to do for the next hour so I figured I'd do a quick update. Not much progress from the last one however.

Most of the techniques I've been using to paint this thing (and build it too) have been trial and error. I'll try something, and if I don't like it I'll try something else on the next section. Like I said, this helmet is basically just a learning experience so I can try to make the next one better

That being said, I don't know what to do for the dome. For the other section I would mask, then paint, the peel off the mask, and then remask the same area plus the new damage, etc. I haven't really gotten great results. For the dome I'm contemplating painting a layer, then masking, then paint the next layer, then mask the new damage, then the next layer, etc.
then I would peel off all of the mask from all of the layers at the same time.
I don't know, is that a terrible idea?? It's not a laziness thing, it's that the way I'm doing it now looks pretty amateur.

If any of you guys have a minute, please just let me know which is the best way to go

As of now I'm working on getting the stencils put on.

Over the next day or two I'll finish the last couple areas of damage, and mask it. Hopefully I figure out which way I want to go soon because I'm excited to see it finished.

And then the kill stripes... That will be interesting looking lol

I'm using rattle cans only. I don't even own an airbrush :(
Honestly, it's a great investment. A really good tool to know how to use and have. They're relatively inexpensive, considering they're not really disposable.

Plus, it opens a huge range of color choices to you!

I'm convinced.

I'll do that on the next bucket for sure. How much am I looking at for a low end one that's not absolutely terrible?

Thanks for the help!

Depending on where you go, it can be anywhere from $30 to $180. Then you'll need a mini compressor.

There's a ton of resources that can tell you a lot more than I can.

Oh that's very doable. Sounds like a definite for version 2

Okay I'll look into it and try to find those resources so I'll have less trial and error next time haha
