New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Inspired by my friend Antrock, I decided to build a "working" rangefinder for my Jango helmet. A servo set-up from Hyperdyne labs makes it travel up and down. The laser and targeting recticle illuminate when the rangefinder reaches the full down position.

Tutorial in two words....Radio Shack.:D
Items needed * Laser module - blue LED - 1/8" clear plexi - rangefinder(hollowed out)- 1/8" flat aluminum(for stalk) - imagination.

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
:suprise WOW! I love that targeting grid that's lit up blue! How did you make that?
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
That targeting recticle looks awesome! Very cool my friend!
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Thanks for the compliments guys. The targeting reticle is made from 1/8" thich clear plexi. The details are dremmeled in and illuminated via bule LED mounted to the side of the plexi, shining through it. only the "frosty" areas of the plexi reflect the light.

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Looking mighty nice!!
I'm the guy that Tony built the laser rangefinder shown on RPF
:)
(for reasons that seemed good at the time, I have a different user name at RPF. I'm Jedi & Mandalorians)
I'm very happy with how it looks!! At this point, I can't afford a servo, but I can't wait to see and hear how your's turns out!!! it looks awesome.
Nice, nice work Judz Dwedd!!!
take care,

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Where is the blue light mounted?...behind the glass. If so, can you see through the viewfinder? Could you post some pics of both sides without the lights turned on? Thanks!
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Yes, you can see through the viewfinder. I must say, it looks pretty cool with the illuminated grid, and the laser dot on your target.

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Judge dwedd< are you or antrock able to do this Mod for others? Looks really good.
the reticle with Jim shima"s leds and servo would be really cool.
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
how are you planning to control the servo to raise and lower the rangefinder??

I plan on using a button on the right gauntlet to operate the rangefinder. The wiring will run up one of the gauntlet hoses to the neck of the costume. When I put on the helmet, I'll plug the switch wires in using a small speaker jack.

I'm not planing on doing any more of these. Maybe Antrock would be willing. Try sending him a pm.

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
I got cha...but my real question is how are you making the servo go down, and then up...theres 3 wires on a servo... +, -, and siganl... are you going to use a DPDT switch this is the idea i had but cant seem to get it to actually go together and make it work

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
I'm not quite sure yet. I ordered a servo and servo controller board from Hyperdyne. I await my order and the instructions that are included. Rest assured, when it's finished, I will post.

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Where are all the batteries and switches held?
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Is there a website for hyperdyne??
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
The rangefinder stalk is hollowed out for the wiring to run down to the helmet. Two AA bateries inside the helmet will power the laser & LED. Another 9v battery will power the servo and cpu cooling fan.
Did I mention this helmet's gonna be equiped with a big screen tv and a wet bar inside! :lol

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
okay after going to Hyperdyne I definitely want a voice activated targeting scope on my helmet... *drool*

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
I'm not finding a laser module at raio shack....any help????? Better name for it or a model #
thanks

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
It is called a laser module - in a Radio Shack box #277-1101
The box also has a website www.RadioShack.com
The store doesn't put them out on the racks. You have to ask for it at the register. Good luck.

Do you need to use a resistor with those 2 AA batts to the laser/led or just wire them straight up??
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Man, that helmet servos are going to be sweeet! I love the idea of the gauntlet controlling it. Nice.
btw, along with the wetbar dispenser in the helmet, you also ought to have a nice stereo...
:)
take care,

Good idea! A nice stereo hook-up would go well with the big screen tv set-up.:lol

No resistor....the LED and laser mod. are both 3v dc. Two AA batteries amount to 3v dc.

Why stop at gauntlet control, on the site they've got the rangefinder moving via voice recognition, now that's styling like Fett...

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Needs a plasma screen with THX capability.

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
So when the range finder is down that reticle is what someone would see looking at fett, right.
you can"t see through the range finder can you?
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
You can see right through the recticle. The illumination shows up just as well looking through it as being looked at thorogh it. I can't wait to see the effect of the blue light shining back and reflecting off the helmet's visor.:D
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Man I am definitly going to have that laser and targeting thing in my rangefinder. Then I'll have the voice activated rangefinder. I also want to put some small headphones into the helmet that I can connect to a small cd player/radio or tape player/radio that I will put in one of the pockets on the belt, so I can listen to music LOL. I hope I have room for all this stuff in the helmet.
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
You kiddin?, You could probably fit two cars in there and still have room for a workbench.:lol
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
LMAO! Just my take on it, but won't there be enough of a prob hearing things inside the helmet w/out the radio?

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Eh no big deal I usually don't listen to people anyway. Just nod your head and everything works out fine. LOL

No I made it myself............
Yeah took a long time..........
hard work......................
No I don't sell them that would be illegal.
yadayadayada...................
Just say that whenever someone looks like they are talking to you. I think you will have your bases covered then, chances are you may answer all their questions correctly. Oh and I forgot one.....no my gun doesn't fire real laser bullets Mr Smart@$$.

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Something I thought you guys should know:
I was just at Radio Shack yesterday to check on the laser module's availability.
Aparantly, based on pm's and emails I've recieved from some members of TDH and RPF, people are interest in getting them.
I found that most of the stores still have them in stock, but they've been discontinued.
So, if you ever plan on getting one, you might want to do it before they're gone. Good luck.:)
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Thanks for the heads up. I'm gonna head out to a few tomorrow to check out availability.
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
I have another Question;
How did you get the image of the reticle?
I have experimented with a razor knife (nice and sharp and very thin brite lines) and a dremel (braoder lines, little duller). Both images very imperfect, done by hand and it shows.
Still trying to figure out which is the best effect.
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
The center ring is actually a hole drilled through the plexi. The crosshairs were carefully done witha dremel emery cut-off wheel and the edge of a jewlers file. Hope this helps.

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Man, can't wait until my helmet with it's laser rangefinder gets here!! I've enjoyed reading about yours a great deal!
Just cannot wait to see how it turned out!!!
:)

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
judz dwedd :How much is the laser from R/S ?
Thanks
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
JD, Hey, if your radio shack has any more Laser Modules, could you pick one up for me? All the one's around me don't have them and they are not expecting to get any more in. They are even pulling the keychain laser pointers because of lawsuits and stuff.
If anyone else runs across any, let me know.
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
The laser module is about ten bucks. Spidey, I'll see if I can snag you one.
-
Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
Got a laser module for ya Spidey. $10 plus a few for shipping. :D

Greetings Strange Ones!! Antrock from the RPF here!!
Here are some up close pics of the original designed laser range finder. The shell is gel coated once and a thin layer of resin to give it strength.I added the components and filled the rest with bondo /resin filler. Left a slot opening on the top for the removeable battery area, covered with black tape.

I added on on/off switch on the bottom here. The unit is completely housed in the finder.

Re: New targeting / laser rangefinder pics
None of the pics were showing untill about an hour ago. :lol This is a very old thread, that I re-uploaded a pic to because of a request. Maybe it's revival will help inspire some members that weren't here when it was origionally posted. :)
