    FD,

Pretty much everything is wrong with it. While your waiting on your Fang helmet to arrive, sit back and study reference photos. The ESB helmet is not random marks like the ROTJ.

Check the paint color threads and decide if your going to do rattlecan or airbrush. Get all the correct colrs you need.
When your helmet does comes in, practice drawing out the damage with a pencil before painting.

You will get the hang of it, just keep practicing.

    *sniff*

    rotj's not random...

    anyway...

it really depends on what you're going for. to the casual eye, i think that represents a definite improvement from the first! if you want a really hard-core helmet, you've got some studying to do.

i found it really helpful to assemble a directory of reference pics that cover all angles. i have a "fett-bestref" folder for rotj. it's got 360 degree views of the helmet. i then go through, 1 photo at a time, matching things up.

i also drew the helmet a few times. just grabbed a pen and paper and drew out the damage. i started to think of things that were most distinctive about it.

for esb, it would be the "cat scratch" mark, the pattern on the visor area, the back panels, etc...

for rotj, there are some really prominent scratches... like the silver line from the dent down to the brow.

the more you look at the originals, the more you'll see.

FD, you couldn't have picked a better lid to practice on. Now that you got the kinks figured out, take your time on the Sarge bucket and do it up right! When I painted my first helmet, I tried to do a combo of layered and topical paint. When I do my next one, I think I will do it all topically. I think it is easier to get all of the damage done more accuately this way. (my opinion) I do not have an airbrush so I used AFFO$ paint list and it was pretty dang good. Look at all of the reference pic you can, take your time and have fun! Jason

Re: New pics of Rubies helm

i love doing layered damage (i'm am airbrush challenged as well, but i've gotten pretty good with a rattlecan), it's more... real. but i keep a fine tipped silver pen handy for the more intricate detail and fine line scratches.

but let me make this warning: i hate krylon fusion satin black. i've run out of regular krylon ultra flat black and the fusion was all walmart had that wasn't a gloss. i don't like the texture of the fusion, it's lack of any texture is the problem. i like to feather mist the ultra flat into my layers of color while they're still wet. it builds up the weathering as i go and i don't have to try so hard to make it look dirty and used.

    FettDad,

    Less is more....less is more.

i am painting the base the krylon hammered metal...then masking off the different areas and using liquid mask, or frisket, to do the damage areas...i got a little carried away the first time using the frisket, so i feel more comfortable with it now...keep the suggestions coming guys!!! you all rock!!:thumbup

You guys know that ROTJ has so many random marks its not funny. The sooner you acknowledge it, the easier it is to paint...LOL

Again, this is personal preference but try to stay clear of those. Use a basic Aluminum or Silver.

Draw out your damage with pencil and then fill in those areas with the liquid mask. This helps keep those crisp lines.
