    New MR Fett Helmet Master

This is the new master for MR's Fett Helmet. It has been posted at the MR Blog and at the RPF as well. Congrats to Rogue Studios on an excellent paint job. Now lets see how well MR can reproduce it!! It was a good choice to go with the ESB movie paint job, not AOSW.

nice. i hope they do a great job... this could be a good product to help them buff up the tarnished image that recent issues have left them.

hmmm.... maybe my ESB helmet craving can be filled by this?

If the actual production helmet looks as good as the master, this would be my first MR purchase!

I guess, now we wait and see!

Are you suggesting that a 15 year old girl in China will be able to paint as well as Rogue Studios? I kid of course, but I don't have a lot of faith in MR at this point. They managed to screw up the clone helmets and a Fett paintjob is way more involved than a clone bucket.

. . .and I just spent a fortune on a MS ESB Nevermind . .it doesnt hurt to have two ESB helmets does it?

That looks really impressive actually but we'l have to wait and see wether MR can mass produce them to this standard I guess.

I agree with Sidewinder. Pack your bags RS, you're going to China!

I really do hope that MR manage to pull this one off. It won't be easy, and if it turns out good I would definately be tempted to make this my first MR purchase.

The MR prototype helmet is a scan of the preproduction 3 helmet, which is very similar to the Empire helmet.

RS, fantastic work! I'm in love with the mandibles.

I don't know how faithful the paint job will remain on the production versions, but you gave them one heck of a master to work off of.

Well done as always. They picked the perfect Master, however I don't think this can be replicated in mass production in China. I'm sure the bucket will be the best one to date that is not Fan made and painted.

    Lee -

Not sure how it came about ... but I'm hoping the "Deleted Thread" had something to do with you getting this gig. I know that MR was watching that thread closely (which is why they requested it be yanked ) ... maybe they'll be starting a new trend of "Listening" to the fans

It pleases the hell out of me that you're finally getting the recognition you deserve for all your research and efforts ! A sincere CONGRATS bud .... make us fettsters proud !!!

Wow I agree with everything else stated in this tread, congrats to Lee for getting the opertunity to give MR a TRUE Fett paint jobto go with their helmet. I hope it comes out even half as good as the master did. But if Lee is working with MR to help figure out a way it can be done, then it might come out decent. This is on my buy list for sure.

I too wonder about what happened to the other guy they had...

Awesome Hero RS! Are there any other tasty details you might be able to give us TDH'rs the inside scoop on, about this much anticipated MR release? Huh? Huh? Can ya'? Maybe like machined/cast aluminum range finder, metal casting of the Borden Tool, Working LED's etc.? We await with baited breath.......

believe the ears and stalk will be aluminum. I know the prototypes ears were machined but not sure if the final will be cast or machined. Not sure on the borden connector or LEDs. It should have a real MQ-1 casting in the back as they have a real casting.

I had a talk about this and some good ideas are being worked up as ways to do it but of course I'm not sure leaving that for China to figure out.No matter what you do in mass production it can't replace a human hand in a cost effective approach. The MR folks are already putting sweat into the process so it is a major focus right now.

The ONLY critique I'd like to offer, (which has nothing to do with the paintjob) is that the LED's need to be recessed into the rangefinder. On all of the images over at TDH archive the LED's are clearly not protruding out of the rangefinder body, but instead recessed completely.

Thought I'd mention this in case MR is watching this thread too

Did you paint over Jason Eaton's earlier, much-maligned paint job or did MR give you a new fiberglass bucket to work on?

Well I don't want to give Jason a hard time he did his best to produce what he thought was needed. I sanded down the helmet and then primered it and started it up the ears were metal so I just used thinner on those. The LED's were installed already and the RF is a solid piece in the black area. The LED's are actually different on the real helmet but TD can tell you about that.

Since you've seen this bucket up close and personal, can you tell us if it is a symmetrical mold or did they try to replicate the assymetry of the original molds? Thanks.

Re: New MR Fett Helmet Master

To be honest if I didn't have an original casting this would be the holy grail to me. They did fix some assymetry but they didn't alter the helmet they scanned if that makes sense. It's also assymetrical so it's not perfect so breathe a sigh of relief it's actually a great compromise. Looking at it next to my original it looks better to be honest since if they didn't fix stuff you would get lumpy bumpy helmet LOL. I was also relieved to see everything matched up very very well. For the record this is not a Don Post on steroids it's a scanned copy of an original and in my opinion and I don't feel I am biased but it's the best **** helmet you can or will be able to own.

Is there any way you could give us a size comparison ? Do you know what its size is compared to say a Mystery, or MS, BM, or DP95 ?

Just thought i'd ask incase you had any of the above mentioned helmets to stand next to it while you were working on it .

I know larger headed people would like to know if their mellons are gonna fit and by the same tolkien of if it's going to look too bobble-headed on a smaller framed person

This thing is going to be awesome! I like many others doubted the quality of the first paint job but recognized the potential of the final product. Now my doubts have finally gone as I see the new paint master from the Paint Master. Awesome Lee! Let those who so cruelly bashed this helmet and Master Replicas humble themselves before you...

Will their be an ROTJ MR Version or will we just have to modify it ourself to make it an ROTJ version?.

And will it have an interior like the mini riddel helmets?

Have they worked out how to reproduce it yet? That is the final hurdle but I know they are going to do their darndest to make this thing right.

See the difference? ....no, neither do I!
(Course the grainy awful picture below doesnt yeild much detail)

Actually I wonder Lee how many really clear pictures of the ESB paintjob you had. Of course I am speaking with no knowledge of what is on the reference cd.

There are a few places that I wonder about though. "sigh" Hate to ask this cause other people problaby know and it might come off as criticism which it is not; Were there more than one ESB helmet used on screen? If so which pictures did you use?

I used what was on Brak's CD and screen caps as well as a few MR provided me. Now keep in mind when doing a paint master not every single little details will be produced so I tried to capture the major ones and please remember I did that in like 5 days from receiving it to shipping it back. The second helmet that I painted will be making it's rounds here soon and that helmet is far more detailed and 90% real scratches I even layered the mandibles too.

Great to hear Lee! I was just throwing those thoughts out there to see if you were basing it on the hero helmet pictures, or a more in depth study of another ESB helmet MR provided. Cant wait to see the new paint job. (btw do you happen to know how many ESB helmets survive? I guess its just the one from what I've seen but surely they painted others?)

Not sure how many ESB but only two were painted to look this way so I would say two. Damrus this is going to be a massed produced helmet.

Oh yeah! most of the photos provided to me from MR were of the PP3 that I believe Jason Eaton photgraphed and they were great pics but unfortunately not the screenused one. However I did gleen info on weathering and how they did it. This will be evident on the 2nd helmet I painted which should be going around to the cons and such. I laid off the weathering on the first helmet slightly to ensure I made the factory's job a little easier in interpreting shapes, color and scratches.

Re: New MR Fett Helmet Master

Impressive as all hell! Congrats to RS and anyone else helping him (if any) for a great job they are doing to get MR to be able to get a faithful replica produced.

    Now, here's my question:

As good as this is going to look, will it be up to 501st standards without a repaint? With them as "hoity-toity" and strict as the can sometimes be, it makes me wonder if it'll be worth it. On a shelf on display it'll be fantastic and would look perfect when costuming but will it get "Oh, great suit but he cheesed out when it came to his helmet." comments behind the wearers back?

This is not meant as a bashing of this helmet or RS for his work on it in ANY way as both are OUTSTANDING and I WILL be getting one anyway!

It's a good question and I think it's as much a mystery to me as it is to you folks. I think the scratches should be rendered pretty well based on the concept process discussed with me. I think if anything the weathering might be a little light and that's it but that is just my theory. As far as 501st approval I have painted several helmets for 501st members and to my knowledge they received no grief to this point but I doubt if they are that strict but I have no idea.

Does anyone have pics of the PP3 helmet they can throw up? If that is the majority of the pics RS used then it should be compared to that instead of the ESB helmet.

Maybe the painters in China will come up with some layered template paint by number thingy. I will in the meantime give them a thumbsup benefit of the doubt on a decent paintjob until i can see the final product. They can copy anything over there it seems.

RS: you told us the correct colors to use and i am even more impressed how you threw them down. WOW

Re: New MR Fett Helmet Master

I think what Lee said was he didn't use the PP3 helmet photos so much for reference for scratches (since they are quite different than the ESB hero), but rather for a better idea of how exactly it was weathered and such. So it should compared to the ESB hero helmet, but also as he said there are a few details left out because the factory job won't pick them all up anyway.

All very good here... By the way if someone cares to they can put up a really good comparison so I can take my awful one down. Maybe I will anyway because it makes me embarassed whenever I look at it. I've said it many times to myself; TIME FOR A REFERENCE CD KEEGAN!

Overall I would estimate the MSH-2 is about 8-10% larger overall as a whole.

I know Lee has more or less left TDH, but does anybody have any updates on this? When is the scheduled release date for the mass produced version? How much of the detail Lee put into his master will be mass produced?

Well I sent a message to MR Customer Care on myspace asking if she could possibly tell me the possible scheduled release date and here is her reply. "We are thinking about doing it but it hasn't been a 100% confirmed yet. When we know we will certainly let you all know! "

Sorry to necro post but I didn't think it would be appropriate to start a new thread. I have only seen pictures of the MR booth at Toy Fair on rebelscum.com so far. I was really excited to see the Bobam Gree, and TK helmet on display. I just hope that the paintjobs on these helmets are clean and look nice when they are actually produced.

I recall reading somewhere that there would actually be three seperate versions of the TK helmet for sale but that just may have been speculation.

I dunno that tk helmet doesn't look so great to me... too symmetrical... maybe is just the camera shot.
    http://www.rebelscum.com/tf2007/MRSneak/image4.asp

And look how large the ear cap is on the boba bucket... its doesnt look like the master version at all. The paint job doesnt match either... It kinda looks like a repainted don post.
    http://www.rebelscum.com/tf2007/MRSneak/image6.asp

EDIT: Wait I am dumb... but the boba the tk and the xwing pilot buckets are the riddel versions (or maybe mini MR if they are new)

This shot is two totally different buckets for boba and tk.... They look much better.

I think that on the first page, the Boba Fett's helmet is a miniature, and the second page is the master of Master Replicas. You can see the difference on the paintjob and the helmet in general. And on the first Boba Fett Helmet Pic, you can see a lightsaber on the rear.

The first two links posted by NikNak are the miniature helmets. I believe you are correct in saying that they are the Ridell versions. I recall reading an articel that stated that MR acquired the old Ridell molds or something along those lines.

Not $120, which is what i paid for a my first mystery helmet on ebay 3 years ago and not $90, which is what I paid for my most recent mystery helmet from Sgt. Fang.

I'm just afraid with the MR helmets coming out, that the private sellers might get the crack down (which would be too bad because they are STILL cheaper and a lot more accurate)

no dis on paintjobs or craftsmanship but low run items are usually nicer than things that require mass production in this hobby
