Hey guys,

I'm new here, and this is my first post. I've spent a good chunk of today browsing around, reading what i can in the hopes of learning enough that I, too, can create one of the works of arts that so many of you have. Some of the sets of armor here are outstanding. I absolutely love it!

I've done some really minor stuff in the past. It consisted of making an airsoft DL-44 for my Han Solo costume (whats this?? A han solo costumer on a mando site? gasp!)

I really want to make my own set of mando armor, especially since I'm planning on getting a mythosaur skull tat in the near future, to complement my rebel one I don't want to make a Boba or a Jango, I want to do something a little different.

Anyhow, I have a really really crappy two piece $30 Jango helmet that I got a while back. I know for darn sure I can't use that thing. I've been looking at eBay and what not and looking at everything from the high end $500 helmets, down to the POS $40ish ones. I don't really like the lumpy boba helmets, and I'm weary of most of the jango ones since they all have the same picture it seems (the same picture that was advertising that two piece i bought :( )

I found a resin kit thats unfinished that looks like it will suit my needs for $75. Can anyone tell me what this is and if its any good? the auction says "mystery" helmet, but ebay has lied to me before, and i'd like the opinion of experts. so is this helmet a good starting point?

Additionally, what other helmets do you guys recomend. I've seen some really nice ones in the $200+ range, but I have to be realistic with myself. I just can't afford to drop $200 on the helmet alone. less than $100 would be ideal. I probably sound like a cheapskate jerk right about now, and sorry for that, but i've got to give myself some limits on spending.

when i get around to it, i'll probably use sintra for the armor plates. I'm also planning a black/red or black/gold color scheme. I read what the colors mean, and that all works for me. It's gonna take me some time, as I'll probably have to do all the work at home 100 miles away (i live in the dorms at my college right now, with no tools or anything)

If you guys have any other tips or tidbits of info you'd like to share, i'd very much appreciate it. Thanks for any help in advance, and this is one of the coolest forums I've ever joined.

EDIT: it also occured to me that i should ask how big/small this helmet is. I'm just under 6feet tall but i'm not really built big. kinda scrawny when compared to people that are "in shape" lol I dunno how much that helps...

thanks again everyone!

Stay away from ebay, especially that auction. That seller is a known recaster (used to go by another name). Look around here for a helmet. Some of them are a bit on the higher end, but won't require nearly as much work as that helmet. I think someone may be selling a low cost vacuuformed helmet here as well, I'm not sure if they're still doing runs or not. If I remember correctly those were around $75. You could always make it, too. There are some great tutorials around here for that.

As for the armor, sintra is a pretty good plastic to use for budget armor. You could also make some trash can armor by buying an oval shaped trash can and cutting the pieces out of that, there are also some tutorials on that somewhere.

Just stick around here and don't go to ebay for any of your parts (unless the seller is one of us ;) ) and you should be fine. Also use the search function a lot, there are a lot of helpful threads just waiting to be dug up.

Welcome aboard future9er24...
If your on a budget you could always check out 'Gypsyboy' he is selling FG Lids for around 65-70 $'s I think? Check out the thread... ;)
I'd personally stay away from flea-bay as there are so many reputable sellers in this community.
Good luck with your project and don't forget we 'like' seeing pics..

thanks for the heads up guys. I was pretty close to "ready to buy" that.

I checked Gypsyboy's thread, but it looks like he's reached his limit of 3 for right now. I think I'll poke around the cargohold a bit.

as for the trashcan vs sintra, I'll play that by ear. If I find just the right trash can, I'll pounce on it. But on the other hand, sintra looks like fun! :p

I do love reading other folks' threads on here and seeing all the cool stuff you guys are doing. Oh, and I'll get plenty of pictures when my project starts. I'll try and get some snaps of my han solo gear next time I'm at home

Thanks guys, for saving me from certain doom and for all the other helpful info

The main difference between sintra and trash can armor is that with the sintra you can make more stuff with what is left... say your knees, gauntlets, jet pack...

If you are on a tight budget, look around, there are many threads to help you make a great costume at a low cost.... if you don't or can't put a lot of time into it, then check the cargo hold for some great deals! There is a lot of talent on this forum and many people will help you if you make the effort of looking around.

Thanks for the plug mojo-fett. LOL I just wanted to toss in a minor correction - my lids are plastic resin, not fiberglass. They are strong, lightweight, and easy to cut/drill/sand etc. Some people prefer f'glass, but in my experience the plastic resin has many advantages.

Welcome.

I think its bradleyfett that has a nice vac formed helmet thats like $65 and is a nice option.

As mentioned before you can build almost any part out of sintra, but its sometimes hard to get the chest pieces shaped correctly. Everything else is fairly easy.

The only real downside to sintra is the knees tend to snap and break constantly.

Also, just want to give you the heads up, careful linking to ebay auctions in your posts that arent yours.

Good luck.

ROFL I have that helmet pictured in that ebay link sitting right behind me. Picked it up off a member here for 30 bucks

If your going to do boba, get Sgt. Fang, a MS (marrow sun), or FP (fettpride-if possible)

Jango-I personally recomend BKBT (BigKidBiggertoys)

Sorry about the ebay link, didn't know that wasn't ok, but I'll avoid it in the future.

I also saw bradleyfett's vacformed helmets, but from his thread it appears he's been out of contact for a while. Ideally I'd love to have one of gypsyboy's resin lids. Those look great!

I'll continue to hunt around the cargohold. Thanks everyone!

well welcome to the dent.

you need to sit down and figure out your price range for everything. changes alot. i know guys that have gotten some decent cheap armor or made it themselves. most of the guys around here will point you in the right direction.

all you gotta do is ask. i dont know about everyone else but i love seeing new kits emerge from the start.

are you doing boba, jango, or going custom?

holla!

-El Fuzzy

I'm definately going custom. As cool as the movie correct sets are (and I greatly respect the folk who can make those) they are not for me.

I've been reading as many custom threads as I can to see how people make there armor, what's good, what isn't. This is truly a great place to be

Ordered one of Gypyboy's lids :) Can't wait!

now... about that armor... I'll swing by target tonight (just because it is close) and see what i can find in the way of trash cans. I see some really great trash can pieces out there

Well no helmet pics, obviously, but I managed to dig up some of my DL-44

It's a Marushin Airsoft gun powered by green gas (basically, propane) I got some of the greeblies and the flash hider online and i got some replica wood grips for it.

It's not movie accurate, but I like it. I've used it to airsoft a few times, and while loading the mag is a bit of a hassle, shoots pretty well.

Welcome to the dented helmet dude. I live not too far from where you live. So if you ever decide to join the 501st.....you'll be in the Central California Garrison, the same garrison I want to join when my Fett costume is complete.8)

P.S Good luck on your costume.(y)

Which of my two homes are you close to? Stockton (school) or Redwood City (home)?

Oops...I thought you live Stockton. If you live in Redwood City, then that should put you in the Golden Gate Garrison. But since you do also live in your dorm at college, in Stockton, then I guess you should be in Central California Garrison instead.

You could join both, but you need to get the approval of both garrisons. But before you can do all that....you need a star wars, screen accurate, bad guy costume first.;) Do you have one?

P.S Are you interested in joining the 501st?
