    New Helmet Templates WIP.

    Morning guys and gals,

I've been busy lately modelling various components of the Fett gear in 3D, I've also just completed the helmet!

Beacause my background lies in papermodelling, I thought I'd do these but using 3D models and Pepakura to unfold them. I'm not trying to out-do Alans work or anything, I think his stuff is amazing. I just wanted to try it my way. Actually, all of the Fett stuff I've been working on has been based on WoF blueprints so they'll be very similar.

Anyway, for the helmet, I've done the bucket and both ear pieces. I've not done the RF.

I hope you guys like it and I hope to have it unfolded and ready for release soon along with my jet pack, rocket pack, and gauntlets.

Here's a pick of the helmet:
    image3.jpg

    Thanks for looking.

    EDIT/UPDATE!!

I have done both a Letter and A4 version of the PDO file.

    Fett HelmetA4.zip

    Fett Helmet Letter.zip

You'll need Pepakura Viewer to print them as they are, or Pepakura Designer to rescale them before printing. Those can be found here: http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/

Hope you guys like the finished thing and have fun!!!

    Re: New Helmet Templates WIP.

    Hey buddy!

You're at fault for this you know!!! I was going to be doing the Biker Scout until I spoke to you regarding Mando stuff! LOL!

Yeah, I didn't want to model the ears as one with the helmet. This way it can all be done seperately and then added at the end. Or, customise it with two RFs like you mentioned or some sort of Macro Binocular (like the RotS clones) set-up or something. Whatever people wanted to do really.

The DL? Sorry, I've only just finished modelling this one this morning, so it's not been unfolded yet. Today is a day off since the wife is home and ill so I need to be around there. I'm hoping that tonight and tomorrow I'll be able to offer the download of the helmet and Jango Arena pack. I hope!!

I'm glad you like it though, thanks for the compliment!!

Also, since talking to you about custom Mandos, I've dug out my sketching stuff this morning to try some ideas I had lastnight for some Mando "heavy" armor. So Look out for that too at some point.

    Hey,

I know I said that I'd hoped to have got the helmet ready for download by now. Sorry, but it's not ready yet. My brother invited me to a BBQ so I ended up being out all day yesterday, then way too tired when I got back.

I'll see what I can get done today.

Thanks very much. I've done most of the unfolding now. However, it's a lovely day here so I've been out in the garden all day. So, it's not quite finished yet.

Quick hitter on the helmet. I cant tell by your design. Is the helmet dome a perfect dome, or is it wide, flat etc? May want to get a side and front shot of the real fett helmet, and adjust a bit, but overall it looks great.

Second, i have to say im really interested in the rocket pack. It should be awesome to see what you do with it.

    Re: New Helmet Templates WIP.

    Hey,

Thanks for that, though I had that one in hand. The dome isn't a sphere just chopped in half. This is based on WoF blueprints so the shape of the dome is true to those blueprints, it's a slightly stretched out sphere, slightly flattened(sp?) on the top. It's as close to Alans blueprints as I could get.

I'm just starting to unfold the Arena jet pack. I need to make some alterations though so that pieces won't run off the page when printed. Like Alans templates for the jet pack, they need joining up after printing? I'm trying to make these templates in a way that all parts will fit onto their pages to be joined up again later when building. So you'll have gluetabs to help point out where everything goes. Similar to Alans still but slightly different at the same time. You won't need a few pages to illustrate how to reassemble the printed pages if I'm making any sense here??

    Re: New Helmet Templates WIP.

    Morning guys!

I know I said I'd have this uploaded by the end of the day yesterday, I was hoping to have had the Arena pack ready too to release them both lastnight. Unfortunately I ran out of time, then to top it off my connection died and I couldn't even upload the helmet.

I'll have the Arena pack done shortly(this morning) so I'm making the helmet available now!

I've scaled this to 27cm(height) but being pepakura, it can easily be rescaled before printing so if for example you had a kid and wanted to make him/her a helmet, then you could. Also, I didn't know the height of an actuall 1/1 helmet.

    Get them here:

    Fett Helmet Letter.zip

    Fett HelmetA4.zip

Hope you like them, and if there are any prblems don't hesitate to ask or mention them.

    Skup --

Working on my Daft Punk helmet again, but once I finish up some work with that, I will be tackling this. The Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk helmet is, after all, mostly pepakura based, as well.

Wow, it looks like you've put a lot of hard work into this project.

One question... What if a member is on a MAC system?

I looked on the "Pepakura Designer" site and their programs appear to be only offered as PC versions. Are there PDFs for these templates?

    Keep up the great work.

    Thanks fellas.

Fettenstein, you make a very good point. Pepakura is Windows only. Though I know Mac users can run windows and therefore use Pepakura. Though I know nothing about how that is done. Sorry.

I didn't make PDFs of this as they would then be pretty much identical to the WoF templates. The whole point to using Pepakura, was that scaling would be easier(using a simple height value) and because there's a 3D representation window which provides great build reference so people know what part goes where.

I use a Mac. What you can use (which is what I use) is "Parallels" software for your Mac. It allows you to run windows on your Mac. It's great! You would then load Pepakura on to your Mac via Parallesl/Windows.

    Good luck.

I understand your reasoning. Not all Mac users can afford to spend the money for virtual machine software and a copy of Windows, and PDF printing is free. Also, your work is different from WoF's in that yours has all the paper tabs, so if someone just wanted to print out one at 50% and do a papercraft model, yours are set up to do that.

Anyway, great work on this project.

Just finished building it! It was harder than a Mk VI bucket! But it looks good. Might I suggest adding more support for the eye area. otherwise it's perfect....for me atleast. Now it on to glassing, bondo and sanding.

Support to the eyes? Well, my thinking was that the T-Visor part can be used to fill that area in and then be removed after glassing it.

Can't wait to see your pics my friend.

Hey that looks good, I like the cards color scheme too! For the support parts I'd either laminate card together to thicken and strengthen it, or use thicker card. I can see it bowing there so the weight of resin or fibreglass could cause it to bend more and spoil the shape.

Can I ask how the dome looks? I can't see all around it. I wasn't sure about unfolding the dome that way. When I did the RG lid, I unfolded the dome into horizontal strips rather then for forks I went with on this one. Did it build ok? Or would you recommend the strips?

Great work buddy! Makes me want to print one out now!!!!

I fixed the problem with the ‘eye’ area; I inserted the visor and added a thin coat of casting resin to form the shape. I've resin/glass it this afternoon. I might have to start my own thread about this Mondo Buy’ce, (instead of wasting your space.)

The dome was THE hardest part but I think it turned out OK. I think for this bucket, horizontal strips works best, it was hard but once I join the four pieces together it just took shape no need for extra support. Besides Samurai Kabuto are constructed the same way and it’s worked well for them for almost a thousand years (I’m a History Buff). I think the strips are more of a project to project thing, I don’t think that it may have worked for the RG lid.

Hey Skupilkinson how would I decrease the overall size of everything by say 25% so that I can build one for my son that is more his size. By the way these templates rock!!! Thanks for all of your hard work.

On the menu bar on the top:
2DPatternWindow --> Scale Up/Down Development by Specifying Value...

    Brings up the window:
Assembled Size (Height) in CM. Skip saved it at 27 cm tall, so if you wanted 25% smaller you'd just calclulate and then enter 20.25 there. You might just want to measure your son first though and see how 20.25 cm tall would look, that seems a little small.

    Thanks Ruze!

There's that way, or go into the 3D model options, and select scale down by 10%. Do this as many times as you need to. Or scale it up by 10% if you go too far.

For these options though you need Pepakura Designer. The Viewer program will not allow this.

You're welcome buddy! Though you could have posted these in my Boushh thread instead of the Fett one. Still, not to worry.

It's looking good bro. I can see a few areas that may be mistakes or areas that need a little more shaping but overall you've done a great job. Thanks for letting me see it.

Excellent work, SPC! Amazing, really. I'm going to use this for my bucket, i think. What do you suggest is the best medium to use for this? Obvious regular 8.5x11 paper is far too thin, but I don't think something thicker like photo paper would work well with resin, fiberglass, or bondo.

Stepping in for a moment, as I have been researching all this stuff for a long while due to interest in Halo helmets, Fett, and Daft Punk... The general answer for this is "card stock". Card stock, however, comes in a variety of thicknesses, just like normal paper, and can also be bought in various sizes.

For my Daft Punk helmet I am working on, I am using 110lb cardstock, sized at 8.5"x11". I got 100 sheets or so in a package at Walmart for about $5. This should be more than enough for a few helmets.

I've also heard -- but not seen -- of cardstock in the 130lb weight range (!!!) and in A4 sizings. Again, heard, not seen. I wonder if the 130lb weight would jam a printer...

In any case, with careful folding, and plenty of careful work after the assembly (resin coat, fiberglasing, bondo'ing, etc) you should come away with a good helmet using 110lb card stock.

    Re: New Helmet Templates WIP.

Thanks very much samlynn. I appreciate the compliments.

For the build of this, you can use regular cardstock. Once you have it put together, give it a coat or two of resin. This won't make the card helmet super strong, but it will strengthen it and help when you come to add the fibreglass on the inside of the helmet. Work carefully and make sure there are no bubbles when 'glassing.

I was a big skeptic when I first found this technique over at the 405th. I'm happy to say that it works really well. The fibreglassed card helmet becomes very strong. There was a video on youtube a while back of a guy standing on his glassed helmet and it didn't crumple! Then the bondo or filleris used to just smooth it all out and add some definition to the edges and contours of the helmet.

    That said...

...I'm building my own bucket from my templates. For mine I wanted a stronger base to begin with to I laminated all of my sheets (except the dome parts)to thicker cardboard, 1mm thick. The helmet was still easy to make and the thicker card will help against warping or accidental damage before the fibreglass is added. To ensure a more stable model prior to glassing, I even triple laminated the flat plates inside the mandables.

It's looking really good so far IMO and hopefully will become a nice lid when I'm done.

    Re: New Helmet Templates WIP.

I thought I'd post these here as well as my Custom thread. This won't be a Fett lid but it was built using my templates.

I improvised alot here as I wanted to use thicker card for it to form a tougher base. I pretty much explained it in my last post I think. Anyway, here are the pics:

Your templates make me want to play with maya again lol.

Just a question out of curiousity though, what got you into the whole paper modeling thing? I've found this alll to be pretty intersting and I'm just curious as to what got you interested in it.

    Re: New Helmet Templates WIP.

Well, it goes back a long way. I was looking for a model kit online, my Google search brought a result for a papermodelling website. I had a look and was amazed by what you could do with paper. The models there were amazing! So I got hooked.

For the last few years I've been designing card models. Things like the BumbleBee Camaro, X-Jet, Star Trek and Star Wars ships, loads of things really. I was a member of costuming forums but never had the space to start any work myself. Then earlier this year I moved into a new house with a garage(and no car to put in it) and found the 405th, I discovered how they're using papermodel design to create Master Chief armor. I'd always wanted to get into costuming but never had the funds to buy anything outright so knew I'd have to make my own. So this merging of papermodel design and costume prop making instantly appealed to me.

So now I use what I know to design templates for armor and helmets for myself and others to enjoy. Models are cool to have and to display but they just sit there. With something like this it can be worn to cons and events, you can just get more out of it.

There's more to the story but that's the main jist of it.

    Mojo, you mean this one?

LOL! I see what ya mean now. Look kind of like a Mando/Turkish armored belly dancer with those clips hanging down! Well, those clips are off now.

I'm just glueing in my card visor place holder. It'll keep the front in shape while I fibreglass it. Then I'll cut it out again when I'm done.

I'm afraid not. I didn't include the actual slots in my templates, I was thinking of making the templates more customisable for custom Mandos.

Though the WOF templates have them included if that helps?

Hey, I just wanted to pop in and say thanks for the templates.

I've been using pepakura for a bit and i'm very impressed with it, so much that I purchased it.

I'm wondering if you've tried making your models with wings3d?

    link: http://www.wings3d.com/

It's a very simple and free to use, I've used many modelers ( Milkshape, AutoCad, Mechanical Desktop, Solidworks, Blender, Alibre, etc...) and Wings3d is always the easiest...and it saves/exports in many different formats.

Anyhoo, thanks again for the templates.

I use Metasequoia. I find it superior to other programs for this sort of thing, easier to use for a start. I've tried Wings3D but never got on with the interface.

    Anyway, thanks for the "Thanks".

I found some time to start. Next step is the dome. I'm hoping the dome straightens out the side of the bucket. If it doesn't Ill have to cut up some scrap card stock and stick on from the inside to straighten it out. I'm shooting to have it done in the next couple of weeks (Shakes fist at work and school).

Will these .pdo files work in most 3D programs? Are you guys using a cutting machine that maps out the 3d or just printing the pieces and making it that way. This sounds like it will be my next project after I finish my HIC.

I'm unsure if the files will work with any other program than the Pepakura program. The program takes a 3d design and unfolds it so it can be printed on your home printer. Then you cut, fold and assemble the pieces together.

You should be able to?? Google "Allzip" It's a zip file extractor that'll open that zip file for you and it's free.

Or you could use "WINZIP" or even "WINRAR"

The circular shape with a semi circle on top? Those are supports you can use to help your dome stay in shape while you fibreglass. I didn't use them on my build.

Oh I see. Yeah. I'm new to the world of pepakura so I would've never thought it was that. Thanks. I'm Going To build mandalorian armor on November 13 for next years comic con. Don't really think I will use this helmet though. I also have a Mandalorian Rohlan Dyre Helmet PDF. I might make them both. I'm going to make my avatar. Doesn't really matter which helmet. And before I end this reply i should just say. Is a FarScape Pulse Pistol good enough for a mandalorian because thats the closest mandalorian blaster I can find.

The Letter and the A4 format should contain the same sized helmet templates, the only difference is that the Letter format (8.5 X 11inch/216 X 279cm) is used mostly in the US, while the A4 format (210 X 297cm/8.27 X 11.69inch) is commonly used in Europe and other countries. You should print the format close to your paper dimensions or you can expect template distortion or wrong dimensions.
