New Helmet Maker - *Last Update*
Greetings!
Yesterday afternoon, out of the blue, a buddy sent me pics of a Fett helmet he's built. (What a nice surprise!) :D
He's looking for what refinements he needs to do to it.
The first pics show it compared to a DP 97. Since the first four pics, he's reduced the flare.
Looking forward to what you all think of his work!!
:)

So, in the realm of Fett, there's the Movie-Sized and the Mystery Helmets. We need a name for this one! :)
And yes, it does need a dent!! :D
Unless it's Jango's? :lol
take care all,
Hope you enjoy it!
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Wow that puppy is huge! Hmm, I'd call it "The Dentless." :)
I had the same problem with over-flair when I was goofing with a clay sculpt awhile back (which is now in a plastic bag in the closet).
It's looking pretty good, I'll look forward to seeing more :)
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Too Big for me!!
I would look like a BOBBLE HEAD...haha
Excellent work though!!
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
I like it. I agree that it might be just a little too flared, but it still looks like a great helmet :)
The farthest corners of the horizontal eye part look like they might come to too fine a point, I can't quit decide.
Once TD comes in here he'll let you know everything that's wrong ;) lol
Nah, seriously the helmet looks great, I'd love to see it painted up, or at least with the ear pieces stuck on :)

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Looks good to me, Rex. Is it the angle, or is perhaps the upper-rear curve on the jowl indentation too rounded? I don't know, I'm just a FNG.
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Looks good to me.. though it may be a tad big, and have a little too much flair (which u said he fixed) but overall it is pretty darn good.
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Perfect for those of us "big" guys;) :love :love Sorry, couldn't resist.
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
The size looks correct to the movie helmet. Remember, it was HUGE!
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Looks really good.First thing I noticed was the inner cheek area being flat just as it is supposed to.Even the "movie accurate" helmets got sort of rounded in the casting process,so this is off to a good start IMHO. :) Looking forward to seeing its progress.

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Very Cool! :cheers Is that sintra and Bondo? I know that pink and white look all too well. ;) The only thing that I can see is the angle on the T-visor. It might just be the angle of the pic, but it looks like the visor isn't squinty enough. This won't be that hard since it's not cut out yet. This is what I mean.
http://photos.imageevent.com/mojoday...ondobucket.jpg
I take it that this bucket is meant to be more symetrical than the ESB. B/c if ESB is what your friend is going for, there are some warps that need to be added. But it looks like a great all purpose bucket for custom jobs like yours, Rex.
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
It looks pretty **** good to me!
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Thanks very much for all the feedback guys! It will really help out alot.
BP, hmmm, hard to say mate, I think he's trying for a bucket that will work for ESB too. I'm trying to read between the lines here, and it looks like there are considerable or minimal differences between ESB and ROTJ? I'm aware of the flare, and the visor needs to have a slight warping for ESB.
Other differences?
Would it be correct to assume that to use the bucket for ESB and ROTJ, it's not possible to have a dual-use bucket, therefore,it would have to have something like this done:
For example: Make a mold for the ROTJ version, then go back to the original and make it for ESB?
I'm not sure if he's thinking of doing two versions...but we'll see.
I know he's pretty gung-ho to get this project rolling very soon, so the feedback helps out immensely!!
:)
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
The difference between the ESB and ROTJ is less than it appears. Though at the same time, the the helmets are not interchangable. I think a lot of the differences on the ROTJ have to do with how the original vacuformed helmets were cast to produce the fiberglass copies, i.e. the ROTJ helmet.
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Thanks Tyler, every little bit of info helps immeasureably.
As you know, trying to build something "Fett", which meets the collective approval of our TDH forum requires details, details and more details. I sure appreciate each and every tidbit of knowledge from all at TDH.
I know my buddy sure does too! :D
Trying to build a "all-purpose" Fett helmet that meets the requirements of ESB, ROTJ and Jango may not be possible, but with a few tweakings here and there, 3 separate helmets may be the way to go. I'm thinking out loud here, as I haven't even bounced this off the guy doing all the work! :)
But, to make something Fett that is darn detailed and screen accurate and yet affordable is a worthy goal.
take care all,
-Rex

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Looks like we have another good helmet on the way. Why dont we call this one the "BIG BUCKET".
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Size looks about right to me. The real thing is HUGE. I traded my miniscule '95 years ago so I could lose that shruken head look problem. Keep up the work looks good.
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
wow that is a very nice helmet ... but guys to have a real comparison put this helmet with the mistery and the movie-sz put pics side by side ...
and about the ESB and ROTJ a Q? :?
both helms have the "wave"? i mean ESB have, but ROTJ have or not :? ... so i go to cdref to see :D
EDIT : pics

ok what do ya think now ... the helm is not the same in the ROTJ ... they make a new one why :? maybe they make the new 'cause the old have that wave ... sound weird but is just a thought :D
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Thanks again guys for the feedback! :)
Secol, many thanks for the pic comparison!!!
:) :)
It's coming together!!
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Again while having a discussion with Brak's, we came to the conclusion that the ESB helmet is the only Fett helmet, from prepro to RoTJ, that has the warp in the brow. Since the ESB was vacuformed, the warp may have been caused in the construction of the helmet.
The RoTJ helmet, as you can see, does not have the brow warp. It seems quite unlikely that the ESB hero was used to create the fiberglass copies. I suppose they could have gone in and cleaned up molded copy, but I just don't think that is practical given the nature of ILM and SFX houses in general. Besides, the warp was perfectly fine for ESB, why bother to fix it now.

Things are progressing. The earpieces should be done today, hopefully more pics will be up soon...

WOW!! grate work, Keep the pictures coming.

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
How about calling it the 'M' Helm? Along the same lines as the Mystery and Movie Sized Helms?
Another reason for calling it the 'M' Helm is that maker's name happens to start with the letter 'M' too. :)
Stay safe all!

Well, that's good start! All great helmets from TDH do start with a "M"! :D
The rangefinder is going to be slick! Two separate castings, Top black, bottom clear.
More details to follow...
Most helmets are cast without the earpieces attached, right?
thanks all!!

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
The helmet looks great, very clean and detailed. I have been
contemplating on building one in the future. I would like to know how the dome was made for future ref. Keep up the
goood work!

It's really moving along, and looking great.

looking great man...keep up the good work
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** More pics* with Earpieces
I may just be losing them in the background but the earpieces look to be a bit thin to me. Maybe if we could get some pics against a solid background. Still lookin good though. Keep the updates coming.
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** More pics* with Earpieces
Thanks guys for the feedback! Too thin 'eh? Okay, workin' on that...
Yeah MMM, he's really serious about these...I can't wait! Here I just got a kewel helmet a few weeks ago, and now I'm jones'in for anudder!!
:D
"Yes, I am a Fett-aholic...so what?!"
:lol
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** More pics* with Earpieces
IMO, on the side profile shot, it looks like the lower jaw area towards the ear area is too low. Looking at the reference picture, the helmet progresses back in what appears to be a somewhat straight line. On this helmet, there is two separate lines: one from the visor area to the front of the ear area and one from the ear to the back of the helmet. So to correct this, the visor area would have to be lengthened or the ear areas shortened. Am I off my rocker? Did any one else see this? Other than that, it looks like a very nice helmet.:)

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-
Believe it or not guys, even though the thing looks HUGE in the pictures, it's actually very close in size to the movie sized helmet. Little bit bigger, but, not that much.
For you bigger headed guys, it'll be a godsend! :)

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** More pics* with Earpieces
Your helmet is turning out just fine, keep us updated with pic.
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** More pics* with Earpieces
If my earlier post did not make any sense, I have drawn the jawline to more closely match the picture. If this looks crazy, I'll shut up.:) Obviously, this would change other proportions, but not much. This looks like a killer helmet, but I did notice this one area.

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** More pics* with Earpieces
Well, after I posted this, I do see that in one picture with the ears, the maker has this precise area penciled to be cut off. My bad! I do not know why, but that one area really bugged me.
E. Vader
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** More pics* with Earpieces
E Vader, your point was brought up before and well, the picture doesn't show the helm well enough but the maker knows about it. No worries though and good catch dude! ;)
Stay safe.

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** More pics* with Earpieces
Cool! I am a newbie here and I did not remember seeing this brought up in this thread. Once I posted the pic, I re-read the thread, and it was only then that I saw the pencil line on the helmet when the ears had been added. I was only trying to offer some constructive criticism.:) Anyway, the helmet is looking great and I am anxious to see the finished product.

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** More pics* with Earpieces
Thanks very much for all the feedback guys!! And E.Vader, no worries mate!! Appreciate it all! :)
Guys, I'm sooo excited about this new helmet!! With all the latest refinements, that I still have yet to mention, like some trick rangefinder goodies...it will be without a doubt,
a "Mighty Fine" helmet!
:D
More to come...
:)
take care all,
-Rex
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** More pics* with Earpieces
More pics, with the rangefinder, on a solid background. Ears are just taped on, so they may be not aligned perfectly.
Other than the ESB "squint", any other details, refinements you guys can think of? It's otherwise ready to go...
Oh, the caster wants to cast the keyholes seperately, to ensure a crisp casting. It will then be inserted into the helmet.
Thanks,
take care,
-Rex

That is a really nice helmet. It looks strikingly similar to the Movie Size Helmet that's been all the rage? Did he use that as the base for his new sculpt?

Yah know, I was starting to wonder the very same thing. I mean this bucket has come a long way but it could also explain why it's larger than the MSH's and that the key slots are being done separately. Not to mention that there are actually quite a few things that are very identifiable as well. Bountys Hunted, how well do you know this maker??

Fettson, WPK, I know the maker and this is his first foray into the costuming/prop world. And incredible as it seems, this helm we're all excited about was scratch built with measurements taken off and converted using just the pictures.
And if you're wondering why it's so damm 'accurate', it's because the maker has professional experience scratch building custom 1/6 armor vechs. For the 1/6 collectors around, you might have seen his pricy work in various dioramas and web stores.
Hope this clears the question up.
Stay safe.

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** Updated**
So far, and I haven't read all the replies but...THIS IS THE PRODIGY SON!!! The size, the shape, everything's awesome!!! I agree with the cut to the bottom of the helmet, though. Keep this one updated, looking forward for the painted helmet pics. I can't wait!!!
Maybe I order one from him,...if he decides to make more and sell them.......only time will tell.

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** Updated**
Why is everyone talking for this maker, is he not a member and if not he should be! I guess I am just fast to question something so good, don't really mean anything by it. But there are just certain areas on this "first time" helmet that are spot on with the MSHs that could not be found in pictures. I guess thats why I am questioning where some of these details came from. How exactly do you get accurate measurements from a picture?? Nobody knows how big anything is on the original helmet to use as a point of reference to take measurements. It's my understanding that the MSH Maker took laser measurements at an AOSW Exhibit. Although I know that even that is only so accurate, going through plexi and all, but measurements from paper just seems a bit much.
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** Updated**
Well, I can't say why he's not a member on here, but having been privy to the pictures of the process from very close to the beginning, I too can vouch that it's not a recast from a movie sized helmet--if it was, it was the worst recast I've ever seen! :)
What details are you fearing are recast from the MSH helmet exactly? Or, what areas couldn't be found in pictures, because I've got about 5 pictures on my ref CD from just about every possible angle! :)
How did he get the size right? Well, let's face it, you're making a helmet. It's gotta fit on a head . . that gives you a pretty good ballpark to start in! :) hehe I've compared his dimensions to my MSH and, like I stated above, he's about a full inch bigger in length.
You were questioning the keyholes . . well, I like to think I've played a bit of a part in that, as I asked him if he'd be willing to do a keyhole area that would fit my movie sized helmet (I dont' have the talent to do it, or else I would have done it myself), as I'm not happy with the keyholes as they came (about my only beef with the bucket too, I might add)
Anyways, hope that helps shine a bit of light on the situation, and calms any fears that it's recast or anything like that. There's no funny business going on . . just a talented guy makin' a bucket with a lot of input to help get it to what you're seeing the pictures of.

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** Updated**
Okay, here's the deal. It's a bit of long story, but I'll try and do the reader's digest version.
Some of you know that I used to work for a toy company. We made mainly 1/6th figures, then later 1/18th & 1/32nd.
I was very active on various 1/6th forums. That's where I met and purchased products from the maker. Our old Design Team told me how they scale up and down weapons, vehicles, etc.
Say they have a 1/35th Tiger tank. Assuming it's accurate...they take loads of measurements and using basic math, scale it up. Same way if they take a actual M-1 rifle or a mini-gun, they measure it, and scale it down to 1/6th scale.
I can't say that I know how to do it, or to even better explain it than that. To them, it was as simple as baking a cake...
The maker of the helmet did the exact same thing. He scaled it off another helmet in a different scale. The most amazing idea, I thought. He scaled it off a Hasbro 1/6th Jango Fett helmet.
Pretty jaw-dropping stuff to me. He was understandably proud how close it was to " accurate-size". As you've read in the above posts,it's a little bigger in a few areas, but not too far off at all.
The ironic thing, is in another 1/6th forum, when the Jango Fett figure first was released, there was much complaining that the helmet was too big...
:)
He considers it a relatively simple task to do. He's the creator of 1/6th German Armored halftracks- 250, 252, various German military vehicles, smaller tanks, etc. He's done American armor, a Dodge Ambulance, even a Sherman tank.
He's doing the keyholes separately, because his fiberglass caster feels he can get a crisper casting this way.
He's making the rangefinder / stalk "wiring-friendly".
That's pretty much all that I've got on this. I'm looking forward to it a great deal. No doubt, more than one will be made. :)
I'm just trying to convince him to do a jet pack!! There's two of them in that Jango figure box!!
:D
Please, feel free to ask any and all questions you might have.Either here or PM me.
take care all,
-Rex

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** Updated**
Keeps getting better Rex. Sounds like a logical explanation to me. Thanks for the pics against the solid background and I think I know the RF goodies you are talkin about. If the keyholes are cast seperate will they also be fiberglass or vac formed. Will the right (rangefinder) earcap be bulit up so that it will meet the helmet and not stick out up top?
-
Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** Updated**
I guess that explanation cleared up most of the questions but one, Rex.
And that being; why ISN'T the maker a member, or at least representing himself, here? Would be nice to hear from him at least.

MMM-Absolutely took the words right out of my mouth!!
Boutys Hunted...
Hey man, I hope that you understand where I am coming from with these questions. Better a friend that steps in to ask before anyone else. I too would rather lay to rest any doubt so it doesn't have to come up again on you or who ever is the secret behind this project. That being said, if there are pictures of the earlier stages of the sculpting process, perhaps the "Maker" of this bucket should post those pics. I think that would end a lot of question about this piece once and for all... As the helmet appears from the start of this thread, it looks to be a completed helmet that has been fixed up with bondo and so fourth. Thats why I am suggesting that early pics of it would imply its built from the ground up rather than the modification of another. And if possible please let the maker speak up, its a great looking piece and he should be proud of it!!! Again man let me stress... I am not in anyway trying to rain on what looks to be a job well done or impliment a recaster threat! Just better to get it out there so its a sealed subject.

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** Updated**
Just a couple of observations,
For one, Jango's helmet is smaller than Fett's helmet(s). WhoJedi can vouch for this, as I believe he said it was closer in size to a DP Deluxe, though I do not want to misquote him.
The MSH is a groundbreaking helmet. It represents a new dawn of Fett helmets. However, I personally believe the MS helmet is undersized. I know the maker of the MSH stands firmly by his measurements, and that is perfectly fine. And it takes nothing away from from the artistry behind the MSH. However in my research, I believe the ESB helmet to be larger. The impression most people get when they see the film helmets in person is that it is HUGE. We've been conditioned to kiddie-sized Don Posts for so long, it's no wonder anything greatly outside that realm looks too big for us.
The dome and the ears could use some heavy reworking, however that is a heck of a job for scratch built helmet. Keep up the good work. :thumbsup

The new helmet is loking very nice!!!!
I know exactly what the sculptor must be going through trying to match the helmet to the pics.
It changes shape depending on the angle of the pic & distance from the camera, its one hell of a challenge to sculpt the helmet.
Tyler, the helmet that was on display at the AOSW wasnt near as big i had expected. To be honest i believe its the camera angles/lenses that made the helmet appear so wide on screen.
Alot of the camera work appears to have been done with wide angle lenses when fett is on screen.
If you want i can post how i got the dimension & what the size is.
Thanks
Nathan :)

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** Updated**
Thanks Tyler for the feedback- Are the ears too skinny, flat, or?? :)
Natty, thanks man!! Appreciate it!
:)
As to some of the questions...
1) The maker is a member of TDH- How else would he have the passion to create such a helmet? :)
2) As to the maker's anonimity, for now that's the way it is, although it may change. He prefers it this way, so he's not inudated with emails and PM's. He just prefers to remain behind the scenes. In his other business, he has four clients who handle orders/questions/ options, etc.
That's the way the helmet is too. I'm the pointman.
:)
It's ironic how this came to be. Awhile back, I mentioned to him how much I would like a larger helmet...
I think I'm going to mention a jet pack next!

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** Updated**
There appears to be a bit of subtle and even not so subtle hints that some feel this helmet may have been, in part or whole, recast from the "movie sized helmet." Time to put up or shut up. If you have some proof, then lets see it. If you don't have anything then why not cut the sideswiping pot shots and lets welcome this new guy's efforts as the warm and closenit community we are! I for one think it is a fantastic first effort and am very interested to see the final product!

Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** Updated**
Well, I can honestly say that there is no doubt in my mind that this helmet is a first generation piece of work. I am well aware of the maker's rep at i/6 scale vehicles, and had talked to Rex long before this project ever saw it's first 3-D incarnation. I wish to alay any fears of this being a recast of anyone else's work.
I just thought that in the hush-hush world of makers/dealers etc., that the maker would have possibly, at least, presented his product to avoid any doubts. After BH's explanation, I understand their position, and am satisfied. Let's get behind and show as much support for this effort as we have for any other craftsman that has made their work available to the Fett community.
Thar's whar my stick floats.

Greetings fellow Mandalorians!
I wish to apologize to all the members of this fine forum if we have cast some doubts on this project as this was surely not our intention.
Yes, I am the creator of the helmet presented above and I'm hoping I could eliminate any "shadows" that envelope this endeavor.
My forte is really into building Fiberglass customized 1/6 scale vehicles whereby I have 4 clients who I build for. Eversince joining this Fett group 7 months ago, I was graciously welcomed by my buddy Rex Adams (Bounty Hunted).
Rex and I are both active on our 1/6 hobby and he has been instrumental in helping me become a Fetthead :) Rex knows all the newbie frustrations I had in the beggining moreso with the purchase of a DP'97 bucket - that I've been trying to make it look accurate, but so far failed.
The cardboard helmet you see above is the result of one afternoon's frustration on working with my DP - thus I thought it best building something from scratch rather than working on an existing design. Why I didnt think about this in the first place is pure stupidity on my part :)
My only intention was to present this helmet as a "surprise" to my buddy Rex. I told him that this project is his and all the rights regarding this to whatever level he wants to take it. Sorta like a "thank you" for all his help & support. I told him to run the ball with it as I am too busy in my schedule that I cant answer any questions that you guys might have.
Thus, I'm pressuming he thought it best to present you the helmet above to be "finely tuned" by some of the experts in the hobby. It would be great to think that the results you see above is the culmination of each & everyone's input to making this bucket better than when it started.
Mind you, whatever outcome this bucket may take, we are in no way competing with any of the great helmets done by great artists on this board - much less convince anyone that this is better. This helmet has full of flaws & inaccuracies, thus we are humbly asking for your help to make it better.
Besides, I cant afford your great custom buckets - thus I have to make my own....LOL!
We could only hope that you see our endeavors as something of a positive move in contributing to this hobby, rather than a negative one.
Lastly, I wish to thank all the good folks of this forum for giving their inputs, suggestions, ideas & mostly your support.
This one is for you, guys!!
Peace to everyone!
Mardon
Rex, you have the ball.......

Thats one mighty fine lookin helmet youve got there and im glad you decided to share it with the rest of the board and not just make yourself a kicka$$ helmet. Re: New Helmet Maker on Scene-** Updated**
Here's the latest update. It has more of a ESB squint added.
Due to time constraints, this is it for now. Mardon's workload w/ his livilhood will be taking over. A small number will be produced next week. The next batch won't be until June.
If you're interested, please PM me for more details.
The stalk will be cast in fiberglass and hollow, to allow wiring to run up inside it, into the rangefinder, for leds. You'll have to do this work yourself. :)
take care all,
-Rex
