    Mystery lid progress

hello my fellow bretheren, it has been awhile...this summer has given me tons of time to get some work done on my lid...it has been very fullfilling, frustrating, exasperating, and totally awesome up to this point...i am pleased at the output so far, being my first quality lid...i know that some of the intervals or positioning are off, so be gentle... please let me know what you think, and thanks for all you guys do!!! great to be back, by the way...

oh yeah, can anyone tell me how to tone down the shinyness? some of it is the camera i am using, so that really makes it look shiny...but i would like to tone it down some....thanks

    Re: Mystery lid progress

Looking really good for your first lid D....

You can use fine grade steel wool to both tone down the colours and 'blend' some of the layers together...
Once yoru happy with it a small acrylic wash will also tone down some of the bright colours too... then seal it all off with 'matt' finish clear coat.

thanks guys for the input!! i will try to find some of that steel wool and give that a try...as far as the matte finish, that is just clear spray paint that takes the shiny out, right?

Looking fab my good friend, I had a similar problem with sheen on my armour.
Matt clear varnish worked a treat!!! I got a spray can version at my local art shop that made the coverage nice and even.

Yep, I use Testor's Dullcoat. Just spray it on and it dries clear, only with the dull finish.

thanks again for all the encouragement, guys!! escho, it wasnt this pretty at the beginning...as boomer said it, i have improved, and your skills develope as you go...this is my FIRST ever ANYTHING to paint like this, so it has come along, and working with a fett lid, it helps cause it IS messy, and scratched up, and dirty, so you dont have to be perfect, and really, that is what makes it awesome, the fact that it isnt perfect....:o

not the silver, but the lighter grey for base metal color...or are those one in the same? silver=base metal....? i used a testors color called "gunship grey" or maybe "battleship grey" for my base metal color....up by the t-visor slot, the end of it, on the left side and down the mandys, the ledge between the mandys and upper cheeks...

well, that time again to post some more progress on my mystery lid...i have been working on the dome lately, and have got some more on the back and the right side, behind the earpiece...i have yet to finish these areas, and still need to use the steelwool to blend some, but the idea is there...i messed up on the spacing with the right side of the dome, it seems to me that the damage area goes to high...but no turning back now...:o would love to have your input on these areas, thanks everyone!!

Note: Are the kill stripes the right height from the brow ridge? they look a hair low to me. Then again I don't have a clue of what I speak..

    Re: Mystery lid progress

    Hey FD,
Great work so far.. I do agree the damage detail is slightly out of scale with one another.

next time just use areas of the helmet as size reference...
Ie; the kill stripes can be used for scale ref.

Also the height of the ear caps in relation to other damage details.
    hope it help.

I did that to my friend Helmet... I painted it ALL by eye, I didn't have time to trace then paint.
so lining things up before you lay paint helps.

    cheers

    ps.
its always easier the second time.

How is it that everyone gets the damage masked off so perfectly? Did you mask off the damage on each layer? I haven't quite figured out how you guys do it yet...
