    My Scratchmade RangeFinder

Hey guys, I decided I wanted to make a pretty accurate rangefinder based solely on reference photos. It was hard but I am very close to the molding stage. For those that are interested, I am also ready to mold my half scale boba fett helmet, so look out for that.

For now, here are pics of the filled, sanded, primed, and wetsanded RF
Here is it with its basic shape

    Here it is fully assembled

    Primed

The stalk will be coming soon. Ill Offer up the whole RF assembly, and Hollow Stalk in...wait for it...Cold Cast. The stalk is hollow and will not bend since it will have a steel tube going down it.

Let me know what you think.

    Re: My Scratchmade RangeFinder

let me know how much when your ready to sell, I got tired of trying to make a working stalk.
When you do finish it, can you leave the RF open so I can put in my LED's, I wanna put a 7 color changer inside the RF with acrylic window to look like a screen giving information.
But since it's your design.. well it's your design and completely up to you.

    Nice!

how is the measurements where the stalk meets the RF? I made the mistake of cutting out the stalk area without accounting for thickness, so I had do adjust...

    Wow, great work!!

Now you just need to find a way to mass produce them if the lines start to form.

    Re: My Scratchmade RangeFinder

Alright guys, I just demolded my first prototype casting of my stalk and it came out great, with 2 air bubbles total and those are just minor, only because I rushed through in the mix/pour process. These will be steel reinforced and hollow as well for electronics. The RF top also was demolded right now and I will be pouring the top half tomorow.

    Re: My Scratchmade RangeFinder

Well guys, I have an update. I have been testing with cold cast alot with test stalks and I have come to a point where I have the mix perfect. Now I did say $35 for the whole set. That price will have to go up to $50 per set of cold cast. Unless you dont want cold cast. I am not done yet with the clear bits, however, I will be done with them in a few days. I will post pictures later of my cc results.

    Re: My Scratchmade RangeFinder

So I know it isn't screen accurate but I was thinking it would be neat to put a small wrist watch sans strap into the range finder so when you put it down you can see the time. Helps you get to those convention events on time

    Thoughts?

    Re: My Scratchmade RangeFinder

You could really go wild with the usefulness of the rangefinder...especially if you rigged it with swappable units. You could have a camera (one of those tiny digital key chain cameras pointed out the front (when the RF is down) so you could take pics of an event...or a digital thermometer or the watch or a host of other useful small portable electronics.

Or a small mp3 player hooked up to speakers in the helmet?

I mean, it's a costume but the helmet is the most bad@$$ part so why not rig it up with all sorts of neat stuff?

great stuff... just what i was looking for actually (well, just a stalk as i have an rf unit already)

Do you think this would be good for an ARC trooper?
Will it hold up to the stresses of a motorized unit?

    That's coming along great!

I can't cast in resin for ****, so mine's likely to be a one off

I'm still (only a few minutes ago) working on my scratched one; finally getting to putting the individual lens cuts glued into place...
