MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
Well, as the title says I’m finally at a place with my own Fett where I can start the painting process on my Fettpride MSH2 helmet.
Many have asked me what my Fett looks like….and well after MANY upgrades this is it, not much I know. :doh
I acquired the rare MSH2 from the man himself, Fettpride, almost two years ago. After painting many side jobs, which I like to call “Practice”:lol (thanks Guys), I have completed the first part of the painting process…the part everyone hates, the PREP work :( .
My goal was to try and make a functional helmet that I could take apart when needed, and replace and upgrade things at a later date.
I also want to create the EXACT Replica of the AOSW exhibit pics…..with all the cracks and scratches…..seeing as how I will only wear this Fett maybe once or twice…it’s basically going on a mannequin once complete.
**So before I go any further... I want an HONEST Critique from you guys and gals…..I want to hear things that you think I need to add or change to be an Exact copy of the AOSW exhibit.:thumbsup
I’ve included pics of some of the things that came with the helmet, and things that I added or built-in in trying to incorporate a workable helmet. (things we’ve all seen before)……It’s the details I’m interested in.:thumbsup
SO PLEASE BE HARSH!!!:thumbsup
(special thanks to EVAN4218 for providing the correct drill bits I needed to make a clean helmet, thanks bro:cheers )
Now the Pics!!
:)

Re: MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
I'm rather curious about how you have the visor bolted in...my visor is removable because I use duct tape to hold it in, lol don't know why I decided duct tape, but mainly did that because I didn't wanna permanently put the home made visor in incase I bought BM visor or something along those lines...plus don't know if they are meant to fit in a MLC

I'll see about posting pics....but I used a Tee Nut. You can find it at Home Depot...Size is 6-32X 1/4"...and be sure to get the corresponding screws..they're made by Crown Bolt.
This type of "tee nut" allowed me to NOT DRILL through the helmet...
I bonded the tee nut to the helmet with 3M Scotch Brand Welding two part mix.:thumbsup It's better than JB Weld...
Again I will post pics..

Re: MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
This is gonna be one cool thread! I like everything so far. The way you have attached the visor is very clever. I must try that myself. If there is one thing that could be fixed it would be the dent. i would smooth it out little in the center. Besides from that, great job! cant wait to see it with some paint on:)

Even though it takes time to paint i always find the prepwork to take the most time.
Any new updates spidey? :)

Re: MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
The prep work looks fantastic Spidey!! I always wished I put the left cheek scratches in mine....I may have to go back in and add them.
I can't remember the last person to do a full AoSW helmet including the blue marker....should be a nice touch:thumbsup .......motorfish over at RPF rings a bell, but I can't be sure.
Look forward to the paint progress.

Re: MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
Wow Spidey!!
I never get over hear much, but I need to start cuz there's so much to learn. I really like what you did to attach the visor. I've always been unsure when I drilled holes in the two helmets I've done, plus the backfilling takes a lot of work. I'm definitely going to use your procedure for my next helmet.
Thanks bro for sharing,
Cruzer:skull

I have to say, that visor installation method is ingenious. Alex, good call on that one. I look forward to this thread !!

I have a great idea for that... but I would have to show you what I was thinking.... and see if it would work. It involves a magnet keylock system. :)

Re: MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
so that glue you used...it won't come off of fiberglass AT ALL ? Thats the only fear I would have if someone just came by and accidently snagged an ear or something.
Now this may sound personal, but where did you get such a small drill bit for the screw recess ?
Bro, you got me jazzed to do another helm now !

NOPE..it's basically cement now...;)
It's 3M Scotch Weld.....I got it from my father-in-law...it's a two part EPOXY that they used to fix military jets at Lockheed Martin AFB........can't get it off the shelf...:doh ...I looked.
Here it is....you can order it only in bulk...
http://www3.3m.com/catalog/us/en001/...er/output_html
I knew I needed something STRONGER than regular ole' JB Weld......."WEAK"..:thumbsd
And the Drill bit is a 1/2" bit....it comes even smaller...I think an 1/4" is the smallest...it matched the size of the TEE TUT....Home Depot BABY!!:thumbsup
AND GET GOING ON A NEW BUCKET JOSE, "everyone's doing it". ask Seeker:lol

Yes and no...:( ..
Since I normally paint using the Layered method I'm still contemplating using the Topical method...for more accurate scratches......
SO just trying to figure out the best "plan of attack".........;)
Basically I've been looking at a primered Helmet now for like two months....:( ....she's ready to be painted just haven't made up my mind:wacko .....as there are pros and cons for both methods.
I should hit-it more soon after some of my other fett commissons are complete.:thumbsup .....Believe me I haven't forgot about her....
I just want this to be the "BEST of the BEST"......and lately there have been some really EYE OPENING FETT Buckets done...and like everything else Fett just trying to make this the LAST "Upgrade".....hopefully..
Thanks for asking..
-
Re: MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
Oh wait!! I painted and weathered the Stalk and Rangfinder!! I forgot...:b
I can post pics tonight...:thumbsup

Re: MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
TOPICAL!!!! Dont punish your self with a layered paintjob. Your bucket will go qucker and will look the same in the end.
I want to see PAINT brotha' PAINT!!! On the bucket!!!
It puts the paint on the bucket or else it gets the hose again!!!
LOL
But seriosly... I want you to bring it how ever it is to the party to show off!

LOL!!...Layered has always come easy for me though...
and I'll think about taking it...It's like unveiling a work of art before it's completed, kinda embarrassing...:o ....we'll see..;)
-
Re: MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
Spidey,
Perhaps you could use both methods at various points along the way ?:doh
I understand the topical method works very well depending on the type of "silver" paint used, that it must "flow" to aviod brush strokes but not lay on too thick as well. Am I wrong about this Spidey (and fellow Fetters) ? Also what is the best brand and color to use for this reverse making method ? I have zero expierence with this method - yet...;)
Spidey I'm sure you, of all people, will make this bucket something special, thats why I asked if you had done anything to it becuse I follow your art work.
Oh, yeah, you will only stop upgrading when the "real" Fett helmet falls into your lap !!! :lol Until this happens everything can always be upgraded,
thats the fun part right ? :? LOL :lol

YOU SAID IT.."BRUSH STROKES"....I hate brush stokes>: ....:lol :lol
That's the Key...:thumbsup when using the topical anyway....layered has never given me any issue with that...
And sometimes allot of these buckets look great in pics, but up close is where I'm concerned about when it comes to topical......I want it as close to the real deal as possible....:thumbsup
and as many know just from looking at the Ref Pics, both methods were used......on the ESB Hero bucket anyway..
The best paint that EVAN4218 and I have finally agreed on when it comes to the applying "topical Silver" is "Humbral" (sp:b ) or "Tamiya" (sp:b).....one comes Enamel and one comes Acrylic....
SO after halloween my GOAL is C4!!! to be done.....hopefully!!:lol
-
Re: MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
I paint with sponge tips, so you don't see any brushstrokes. Mine is a combonation of topical and layered.

The helmet looked amazing when I saw it, though I did have one question. How did you get the bunny ears to stick?

Re: MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
Just started working on my boba helm. I just got back from home depot with all the necessary supplys to use your awesome removable visor mounting. For anyone else wanting to use this technique I suggest getting this Fostner Drill bit:

I believe from the photo that is the same one that spidey used (correct me if I am wrong)

Re: MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
I absolutely want to try and use this visor mounting method. I hope to see as many progress pics as I can to see exactly how to mount those niknak! Maybe a tutorial is in order. What do you think? It would definitely make life easier on me, you have no idea...Oh yeah, about how much was that Forstner bit? Just out of curiosity...Many thanks, I think you've taken a weight off my shoulders. I'm afraid the near total lack of dexterity in my right(and dominant) hand keeps me from attempting to hot glue it in place as I'm afraid I'll have glue all over everything. It's happened before on other projects at the most inopportune moments. I also like the look of the "rivet" look of the tee nuts on the visor. makes a perfect addition to a custom mandos buy'ce...I can't wait to see how yours turns out!

Re: MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
Well, I went and picked up all the tee nuts, bolts, nuts, Forstner bit and some stuff for my gauntlets today. So I have everything that'll allow me to put in my visor, rear circuit board-which I painted to look like a real MQ-1 circuit board. I know that's not how Fett's was, but I thought it'd be cool to see what it looks like...Now, I have a question. Once you set all the tee nuts in place etc and get them epoxied in place. How in the heck do you mark and then drill the holes so that the visor will bolt on in exactly the right place. Is there a method you used that I'm not thinking of? I'd imagine so...

Re: MY MSH2.. It has Begun.
Got everything I needed to set my visor via tee nuts etc. Now how in the heck do you mark the visors so that you know where to drill and then pray that it bolts in straight in the perfect position? I may have to ship it off and have it done yet...:doh
