My Latest ROTJ Special Ed Bucket

Hey guys. I figured that since I've been working on this project for about a month off and on I should probably start a progress thread.

Here's my latest and hopefully LAST ESB/Special Ed bucket that I paint. They look great but they are a pain in the rear to do.

I'm going completely layered with this paint job and using masking fluid to help with that. Also, I'm using a combination of rattlecan colors found in a couple of threads here as well as some of the Pollyscale/Testors bottles.

Here's the first step. Silver/Aluminum paint with the damage masked off:

I made some major progress over the past week painting up the back, top and lower cheeks. I still need to go back in and add the detailed bits to the top and lower cheeks as well as some weathering... then it's on to the kill stripes and ear pieces.

Here's the link to the album where you can see all the progress photos and layers:

I darkened the gray around the scratches and began in with the heavy weathering in and around the dent and the kill stripes. This thing is really starting to pop now!

Getting there... added most of the ear parts last night. Also, over the past couple of days I've gone back in and touched up a lot of the weathering points to sharpen up the details.

So, I've still got some work to do on the bucket but it was close enough to wear out. Man, it felt great being Fett again! First time since March! Here's me with my daughter Julia in her Ahsoka costume.

And here we are with Scott Chana, a.k.a. Jimmy Buffett who drove from Arizona to Massachusetts for this con!

By the way, check out how loose my vest and jet pack harness are! THAT is a GREAT thing... that means I lost over 2 inches around my middle since March!!!! That's an upgrade I'm THRILLED to have to do!

Wonderful weathering job! When you use the masking fluid, do you keep it on for each coat of a different color, adding masking fluid as you go? Or do you remove masking fluid after each coat? If so, how do you keep the previously masked areas of a different color from being painted over?

I take off the masking after every layer and re-mask when I paint the next color.

I worked more on the bucket last night adding the weathering of black washes, some additional scratches and touch up paint here and there and finally added the famous white thumb print on the left side of the bucket that's found on the ESB/Special Ed one. Also added the brown speckled weathering to the rangefinder stalk, earpiece and added the light gray scratches found in the dent. I call it done until I find a clear bottomed rangefinder topper.

man, that looks... awesome!! not just the paint... the textures... did they happen by accident or did you intend for them to show up? I don' t know... the very, very slight structure in it makes it look... a 1000x more convincing... to me anyway...

incredible... your one of the best!!

Thank you very much. The textures were definitely done on purpose. I feel that since the paint is supposed to be damage to the helmet then it really should look that way. I take the .00 guage steel wool pad and smooth it down to a certain extent but always try to ensure that the layers show clearly.
