My ESB helmet progress

I must have had my head in a hole the last few months. How did I miss this thread? :facepalm

Great work JFJ. (y) Your paint job looks fantastic so far.

I noticed you havn't painted the "yellow" on the back of the helmet. I know I still owe you some input on color choices, and I think I found a color that will work good. I am going to try to put together a comparision of the various colors I tried out, and post it in the helmet painting thead. I hope it's not to late to help out. :p

Thanks! I will get to that in a while, but I'm actually leaning towards using Earth, same as on the ear. From what I can tell by photos with the two areas in the same shot, they both look very similar. I'll watch for your comparison though for sure :)

By the way that right earpiece is a bit of a mess, but that will be fixed up when I get the cold-cast aluminum earpieces to replace them. That curve I cut out is for the rangfinder wires, which I'm making run down the stalk and through that hole as the original helmets with lights had. It's a little messy on this one, but I'll make sure to do a better job when I get the new one in.

Wow, that looks killer, really inspiring stuff keep it up. I still cant decide which way to go on the back of my M_S regarding colour, is that just Euro Dark Green or did you add any blue to it at all? Looks great!!

Now it's REALLY starting to take shape and develop some character. I don't envy you one bit though...this time last year I was knee deep in and ESB Fett helmet myself:lol: The back was a bear;)

HH, I used the Euro Dark Green but did a very light misting of Dunkelblau, which is why it likes to change colour in most photos between the two.

This is so true of mine also. I airbrushed on the Dunkelblau and then sponged on the Euro Dark Green in a wash...then went back and forth sponging the blue over again and again with green...and again with flat black.

It gives a real nice 3dimensional look in person. In photo's it can go either way with more blue or more green showing up depending on lighting.

I'm taking it a lot slower than I expected, but I'm finally had a bit of time to work on this side of the mandibles.

This side is close to finished, still a wee bit of work to do on it, I just wanted to give an example of the differences I picked up between the ESB helmet as it appears on screen and how it appears in the exhibits (camera angle and lighting obviously distorts it).

They're just little scratches here and there, but it's with these little details that I hope to have an "ESB accurate" helmet ;)

Looks great JFJ! I too went for the on screen ESB look. I'm certain that the silver scratches have dulled a bit from being handled over the past 25+ years. I also opted not to do the crack/repair on my own ESB.

Taking a long time is critical IMHO to getting a helmet to ones own satisfaction. Take your time and enjoy the process,....no matter how mind numbing it can be;) When you look back, you'll wonder how you ever got through it.

Yikes, I didn't realize it had been so long!
Here's a little update, finally found some time to finish up the right side. Just when I thought I had it, I realized I had to go back and fix up a few spots. And I guarentee I'll be going back to touch up some more!

Sorry they're a little dark, I'll save the decent photos for when I'm finished, whenever that will be.

Awesome stuff JFJ, youve got to bring this helmet to COSI so I can check it out in person, I thought your helmet at CIII rocked and this is even better. Hopefully I can steal some of your helmet painting juju.

Where in Canada did you find the right paints????

I am planning on taking some pics to Michael's and winging it with acrylics.

Looks GREAT BTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SO are you doing the "MASTER MR Fett helmet" or is RS?????  ..
(that was a compliment.) ;)

So glad to see you taking your time with this....
Should be one of the best when it's done.(y)

Thanks for the kind words guys :) I will bring it to COSI for sure, I hope to have it done by then actually once things slow down for me. I'm taking my time, but I never realized how long I've been dragging this out!

Finding the right paints was pretty tricky, but I was able to find most of them at my local hobby shop. Anything I couldn't find I got my friend to scour some shops in Toronto for, and luckily he found the rest. Your best bet is hobby shops, you never know which ones will have them and which ones won't.

Incredible!!! thats shaping up to be one of the best buckets I've ever seen!!! Just Awesome. Really had to take a big chunck out ot the ear area for your servo huh???

I called our local hobby shop and they DO carry a full line of Floquil and few Model Master..so I'm heading there after work!!!

yahoo!

Now I know why a painted helmet costs more....$75 in paints. I found most of the colors....I'll have to improvise for a couple...
