Just a little update, got a new camera (yay) and I just did some quick photos in the lighting I have in this room, and got some funky results. Any doubts I had about the Boxcar Red not being red enough were put to rest here. All the colours are the ones Rogue Studios suggested.

Is that straight boxcar red? If so, it turned out much more red than mine. I even added bright red to mine, and your's still looks a little more red. Hmm.. that Boxcar Red is real strange

Maybe it is your new camera, cause that's the first box car red application that I've seen to look that saturated too.....???... ..hmm?

That's better. Forget the school work and keep busy with the helmet.
Nice to see you finally have your priorities straight.

I must have had my head in a hole the last few months. How did I miss this thread?

Great work JFJ. Your paint job looks fantastic so far.

I noticed you havn't painted the "yellow" on the back of the helmet. I know I still owe you some input on color choices, and I think I found a color that will work good. I am going to try to put together a comparision of the various colors I tried out, and post it in the helmet painting thead. I hope it's not to late to help out.

Thanks! I will get to that in a while, but I'm actually leaning towards using Earth, same as on the ear. From what I can tell by photos with the two areas in the same shot, they both look very similar. I'll watch for your comparison though for sure

By the way that right earpiece is a bit of a mess, but that will be fixed up when I get the cold-cast aluminum earpieces to replace them. That curve I cut out is for the rangfinder wires, which I'm making run down the stalk and through that hole as the original helmets with lights had. It's a little messy on this one, but I'll make sure to do a better job when I get the new one in.

Wow, that looks killer, really inspiring stuff keep it up. I still cant decide which way to go on the back of my M_S regarding colour, is that just Euro Dark Green or did you add any blue to it at all? Looks great!!

HH, I used the Euro Dark Green but did a very light misting of Dunkelblau, which is why it likes to change colour in most photos between the two.

This is so true of mine also. I airbrushed on the Dunkelblau and then sponged on the Euro Dark Green in a wash...then went back and forth sponging the blue over again and again with green...and again with flat black.

It gives a real nice 3dimensional look in person. In photo's it can go either way with more blue or more green showing up depending on lighting.

I'm taking it a lot slower than I expected, but I'm finally had a bit of time to work on this side of the mandibles.

This side is close to finished, still a wee bit of work to do on it, I just wanted to give an example of the differences I picked up between the ESB helmet as it appears on screen and how it appears in the exhibits (camera angle and lighting obviously distorts it).

They're just little scratches here and there, but it's with these little details that I hope to have an "ESB accurate" helmet

Looks great JFJ! I too went for the on screen ESB look. I'm certain that the silver scratches have dulled a bit from being handled over the past 25+ years. I also opted not to do the crack/repair on my own ESB.

Taking a long time is critical IMHO to getting a helmet to ones own satisfaction. Take your time and enjoy the process,....no matter how mind numbing it can be When you look back, you'll wonder how you ever got through it.
