My Boba Fett helmet using AntMan's building tips.

    Hi guys!

I'm new here at TDH, and I was watching AntMan's second cardboard helmet scratch build.
I made a Boba Fett helmet using Skip's Papekura design, but this model was made of paper, so I wasn't satisfied with the weak structure of it.

    Here is the helmet.

    dsc04653.jpg

So I started the helmet build again, now using Wizard OF Flight's templates combined with Skip's papekura helmet. The materials used are 2mm cardboard from some unused document holders and 0,5 mm cardboard from other type of document holder, for glueing I used superglue, and for the visor I found a black transparent paper dossier.

I don't want to start a new how-to-build thread, I just want to show you my steps of scratch building.

After I printed the templates, I used carbon paper to transfer them on the cardboard.

Here are the inner and the outer parts of the helmet.

    dsc04652.jpg

I didn't used AntMan's cardboard water-bending instructions, instead I made some vertical stripes with a used ballpen on the back of the parts needed for bending, then with care I used step by step pressure on each helmet part until I get the desired form.
Then with care I glued them together.

    dsc04657.jpg dsc04658.jpg dsc04659.jpg dsc04660.jpg dsc04662.jpg dsc04661.jpg

Thanks to Little Boba Fett, a was able to do all this for now.

    dsc04673.jpg

Ow! By the way, I mentioned that I'm a PaperCraft fanatic?
    Here they are!

    dsc04663.jpg

    Enjoy!

    Hi!
Today I made the Rangefinder and the base of the right earpiece. The building steps are similar to AntMan's instructions, but I used Skip's papekura design to cover the earpieces.

    Here are some images:

    dsc04679.jpg dsc04680.jpg

As soon as I will make other parts of the helmet, the images will be posted here.

    Hi again!
    I'm back sooner then expected.

I glued on the cheakbones on both sides, then glued on the rangefinder upper half right earpeace. You can see that this part is covered with thin 0,5mm cardboard made from Skip's slightly modified templates. The dome half rings are also glued on top of the helmet.

    dsc04685.jpg dsc04684.jpg dsc04683.jpg dsc04682.jpg dsc04681.jpg

I'll get back soon as I finish other remaining parts of the helmet.

    Respect!

Re: My Boba Fett helmet using AntMan's building tips.

    HI!

Yesterday I finished the lower part of the right earpiece and the left earpiece using WOF's and Skip's templates (again).

    dsc04686.jpg dsc04691.jpg dsc04690.jpg

Then I focused on the construction of the keyhole pattern and the MQ-1 circuit board. For the MQ-1 I used 2mm cardboard and two types of staples for the connector bridges and the 'legs' for the CPU.

    dsc04687.jpg dsc04692.jpg dsc04693.jpg

I'll get back soon as I make new parts.

Re: My Boba Fett helmet using AntMan's building tips.

    Hi!

I'm back with new images of my construction stages.
Yesterday I painted the MQ-1 circuit board, but not in full red as seen on AntMan's first cardboard helmet build. I used a realistic paint of an original circuit board. And as you can see in the images, I remade the keyhole with an extra rim on 3 sides.

    dsc04694.jpg dsc04697.jpg dsc04698.jpg dsc04699.jpg

Today I made a cut in the rear of the helmet, then glued in the keyhole with the MQ-1 mounted with 4 screws for a quick detach.

    dsc04702.jpg dsc04716.jpg dsc04711.jpg

Then it was time to glue on the remaining ear pieces

    dsc04700.jpg dsc04701.jpg dsc04703.jpg

I left the dome for the last part of the construction, because it's the part where you need the most attention. After I bended all 3 parts, I used paper strips to glue each slice from inside.

    dsc04706.jpg dsc04704.jpg

And here is the helmet with the dome done.

    dsc04707.jpg dsc04710.jpg dsc04709.jpg dsc04708.jpg

I made the final cuts on the helmet for the visor, then installed the visor temporarily with duct tape.

    dsc04712.jpg dsc04714.jpg dsc04713.jpg dsc04715.jpg

That's it for now. I'll get back as soon as I made the next step.

    Respect!

Amazing work! Your skills with paper are definitely helpful with this. Your dome turned out basically perfect! I'm very much looking forward to seeing more. Keep it up!

Re: My Boba Fett helmet using AntMan's building tips.

    Hi there!

Today I made small adjustments to my helmet. I made a cut for the dent on the helmet, then with a bigger cardboard circle I sealed it from the inside. Made the arrows on front of the helmet, and added the two small items to the cheekbones. And last, I filled the right upper earpiece near to the helmet dome.

The dent will be made after it is filled with filling material, then carved with the right tool. Check out AntMan's first thread on how to do it here http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f23/f...rdboard-23159/
I think that I must deepen the hole for the dent.

That's great! I hope that soon you will show us your construction steps. But be aware that Skip's papekura design is slightly different in dimensions from that of WOF's templates and you may need to resize the ear pieces.

    Hi!

In the last days I was applying a wood and wall repair putty on some parts of the helmet. It has a two hour dry time for sanding and it has elastic properties. I already applied two layers of putty on the dome and the left cheekbone, then made a first time sanding. Then I covered the front part of the helmet and the right cheekbone with the first layer of putty. Then I filled the dent, and after drying, it was modelled with a cutter. Tomorrow I will made more sanding and more layering.

Thanks! You started your helmet building?

It's hard to do the covering and the sanding when you have free time around 3-4 hours per day. But the beauty of this is when you look at your helmet done. Lots of patience and even more passion...

    Hi!

Today I made more sanding and more putty applying. Not too much, but enough for a 2-3 hour of hard work.

    Hi!

Today I made the final applying and sanding of the helmet. It isn't a perfect one, but I'm satisfied with it. I was surprised that the putty isn't cracked and it can be sanded easily.

The oil based paint will be painted with brush. But that's put away for the next week...

    Hi there!

Today I made a first try with the paint on the rear keyhole. It's not perfect, but after drying I will make the details of the weathering. Here are some shots of the paint.

My luck was that I have bought those oil-paint tubes a long time ago (not in a galaxy far, far away...). I used to paint T-shirts with them.

Re: My Boba Fett helmet using AntMan's building tips.

    Hi!

Yesterday I painted the helmet's front and back red areas, then I did the lower and upper cheeks. This is not a perfect paint job (I guess I said this in a post above) and more details will be added as soon as the paint will dry (somewhere between 3-4 days). I know that you will say "but the lower cheek green is not the right one"! I know this, and I will try to find the right mixture of paint to get it as close as I can. But the overall look so far is good.

    dsc04745.jpg dsc04747.jpg dsc04748.jpg dsc04751.jpg dsc04749.jpg dsc04750.jpg dsc04752.jpg

You can see that the rear keyhole paint is already corrected.

Re: My Boba Fett helmet using AntMan's building tips.

    Well, hello there!

I have no rest until my helmet paint is done. So every little pause I take is like a torture... But because of the long time drying of the paint, this is inevitable. I made a correction on the lower cheek green colour. It is not perfect, but is a closer match to the original colour as the old was.

So there are some images of my latest paint-stages.

    dsc04755.jpg dsc04756.jpg dsc04759.jpg dsc04761.jpg dsc04763.jpg dsc04764.jpg dsc04767.jpg

If you look closer, you can see the brush strokes on the dome. I guess I can even these marks after the paint dries. But until then... more torture!

    Respect!

    Hi!

I ain't gonna let you stay too much without stressing you with new paint stages. I say it again, this is not the final stage of the paint. There's gonna be painting, repainting and paint repair as needed.

Here are the actual paint stage images.

Re: My Boba Fett helmet using AntMan's building tips.

    Hi!

Well, I'm almost done with the painting. Today I made the left ear decals by hand without any template (just a screen image reference).

    dsc04790.jpg

I've done some retouch of the weathering on the dome.

    dsc04805.jpg

Then I moved to the painting of the right ear. After I left it to dry a little, I added the right ear decals (also made by hand), then made the weathering on the right ear.

    dsc04804.jpg dsc04801.jpg

    Then I painted the rangefinder.

    dsc04808.jpg

After that, I moved to the rear of the helmet and made the base paint and the weathering.

    dsc04792.jpg dsc04795.jpg dsc04798.jpg

So, here it is, my own Boba Fett helmet.

I know, this is not a movie accurate helmet, but I loved to make this helmet from scratch. It was my first try with this kind of craftmanship, and I guess it turned out really well.

I got to thank to Art Andrews for this brilliant forum where you get inspired by some great builders and painters. And I must to thank to Alan for his great templates and Skip for making the alternate Papekura helmet templates, many thanks to Rich D. for those great paints and decals, and last but not least, a big thanks to AntMan, who inspired me to start building my own Boba Fett helmet.

    Until next time...

    Respect!

Thank you very much! If you believe in what you're doing, then there's no problem on how your helmet will be.

I was so thrilled on how my helmet looked, that I almost forget about the kill stripes... So, today, I hope this stripes will be painted by hand (again) and I may add more weathering as needed (specially on the rangefinder).

    See you later, I hope.

    Respect!

Re: My Boba Fett helmet using AntMan's building tips.

    Hi!

As I promised, I'm back with (I hope) my finished Boba Fett ESB style painted helmet.

I made the kill stripes by hand.

    dsc04841.jpg dsc04842.jpg

Then made the weathering on the rangefinder.

    dsc04856.jpg dsc04858.jpg

And finally, I added that T-like symbol on the right ear.

    dsc04854.jpg

So, here is the helmet... again.

    dsc04813.jpg dsc04815.jpg dsc04816.jpg dsc04818.jpg dsc04820.jpg dsc04821.jpg dsc04824.jpg dsc04826.jpg dsc04833.jpg dsc04831.jpg

And this is me, wearing the finished helmet for the first time. Images made by my lovely wife.

    dsc04939.jpg dsc04941.jpg dsc04937.jpg dsc04942.jpg dsc04940.jpg dsc04938.jpg

It's like... whoooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! It can't be described in words. It's like you see him, Boba Fett in person... without the jumpsuit and the rest of his gear... Amazing!

Here is a gif file about the making of the helmet.

And here is another gif file of the helmet.

    Well, until next time...

Re: My Boba Fett helmet using AntMan's building tips.

    Hi!

Never say never... Today I finaly put a lining into the helmet. This was made from an unused pair of black jeans. Now my helmet fits perfectly on my head.

Any comments (constructive or critical) are welcome. Let's see what others thinks about this helmet.

    See you next time.

With screws. You can see it here Helmet padding and T-visor mount. If you can't find the desired length then cut the tip of the screw this way you won't ruin your helmet.
