My BM lid build up progress
Hi folks,
Heres my little thread on the build up progress of my BM lid ***thanks to Daz for a great helmet***
The first pics show some shots of the bucket prior to painting, taken as I got it out the box.....
The third pic shows a close up of the crack on the visor. I created this using a screwdriver and then re-primed it with a priming pen.
The next pic is the keyholes cut out.
And the final pic is of the first coat of chrome. For this I used Humbrol silver spray. It comes up really well.
Stay tuned for more updates!
Cheers

Re: My BM lid build up progress
It looks really good so far. Do you think that chrome silver paint would look good as a cover for Jango? (Sorry for getting off subject).
-
Re: My BM lid build up progress
I think the chrome silver would work as a good jango, but as I'm not doing a Jango myself I couldn't be 100% certain.

Re: My BM lid build up progress
Here are some more pics of the chromed helmet.....
The following two pics are of the masking of the scratches. For this I used Colourless Art Masking Fluid by Windsor and Newton. It can be applied with a paint brush, but make sure you have some warm soapy water near by to clean the brush with, otherwise it gunks up big time.
I also followed Spidey's recommendation to draw the scratches on first and of course, make the most of reference materials.
Stay tuned for more!

Re: My BM lid build up progress
I've hit a slight stumbling block!
It appears that the masking tape I am using is the very sticky kind, which has meant some of the silver paint has "lifted" in some places. To counter this I have decided to mask entire areas with Copydex. I don't know whether this is available in the states but it is essentially a type of glue that is similar to the masking fluid.
I have painted this stuff over the large areas to be protected, and also used newspaper to cover some areas.
Any further lifting of the silver can be resprayed...I recommend getting some of the low-tack masking tape though!

Re: My BM lid build up progress
dan, go down your local model shop and pick up some tamiya masking tape,
I used it on mine and it worked great.
Looking good so far
-
Re: My BM lid build up progress
go for it!! looks good, sure you'll figure the lifting silver, otherwise touch it up with a brush afterwards
-
Re: My BM lid build up progress
you can take masking tape and put it on your shirt or a towel and then pull it off. after a couple time it will lose quite a bit of it's sticky but still stick to a surface. letting it peel off easier without sticking too much. hope that helps some.

Re: My BM lid build up progress
Ok guys heres the first coat of the dome and cheeks. I had a bit of a problem when the gas cannister ran out of juice for the airbrush!
I must acknowledge the input of FETTSTER for his advice on paints for this helmet.
This first coat is made up of a mix of Tamiya Olive Green (XF58) and Tamiya White (X2) with a a few drops of Tamiya Field blue (XF50) I mixed the olive green and white 50/50 and some blue drops. I then just ended up adding a bit more of each until I was happy with the colour. PLease excuss the quality of the pictures, the lighting does affect the colour.

Re: My BM lid build up progress
Sorry for lack of updates! Been quite buy back at work, plus I haven't been able to transfer the pics from my phone to the computer, but finally got it sorted......
THe first three show the red on the mandibles
THe next one show the helmet de-masked, I still have to do the upper cheeks
The final set shows the helmet with the upper cheeks done, and totally demasked. I now need to do the back, and then start with the topical colouring and weathering

Re: My BM lid build up progress
Are the BM buckets bigger (or wider) than the MS helmets?

Re: My BM lid build up progress
Merry Xmas and Happy New year to all!
With a new year comes a new update!
Firstly, here is my work on the ear and range finder.
I have drilled recesses in the two piece ear cap to allow for three bolts and their heads and have drilled three holes in the side of the bucket.
I then took three bolts and placed them in the holes and cut them to length thanks to my brand new dremel. You should have seen the sparks fly!:wacko You can see this in the first two pics.
I then made some shallow recesses in the last piece of the earcap just enought so I could fit three tiny neodymium magnets into the holes so that when the ear cap is in place the magnets stick to the heads of the bolts. As you can see in the next photos.
Over xmas I have also fitted the visor and sprayed the bcak of the helmet and left ear. I just need to spray the right ear and then I can begin the weathering........keep watching.......

Re: My BM lid build up progress
How did you fit the visor? Im trying Bobamakers method with my M_S helmet, fixing bolts inside the helmet and using a home made aluminum bracket to hold the visor in place, have you got any pics of the inside? Your painting skills speak for themself, this helmet is coming along very nicely

Thanks for the compliments!
I heated the visor in the oven until it lost its rigidity and place it inside the helmet and held it in place until it cooled down and hardened, this eradicates the number of gaps between the visor and the helmet.
I used some epoxy putty that comes in a tube and you have to knead until it is ready to be used. I then placed this at certain points around the visor to hold it in place. The stuff solidifies and is like metal and cn then be sanded drilled etc. This stuff is pretty strong and holds it in place just fine. It does mean the visor is permanently attached though.
I will get some pics of the inside uploaded shortly.
Cheers

Re: My BM lid build up progress
Once again it's been awhile since i last posted an update on the helmet, so here goes.....
I've got a lot done recently and I'm pleased to say its almost finished.
I have added the grey and purple scratches/blotches to the mandible using Citadel purple ink and codec grey.
I have also painted the right ear, firstly with a base coat of tamiya flat earth mixed with j.a green, then topped with a light coat of tamiya gold leaf.
I have also put the darker grey marks on the dome and cheeks using tamiya field blue and citadel codec grey.
I have also painted the kill stripes using TK-409's template and a mix of tamiya flat yellow and orange, with an extra misting of orange afterwards.
I have also added some scratches using a screwdriver and painted some small black marks randomly over the helmet.
All I need to do now is mist the whole bucket, find some ear decals and apply a clear coat, then I can move on to the interior.
I have decided to scratch build my own RF using Wizard of Light's template and my first attempt using card has turned out really well.
If anyone is interested in a BM hollow RF let me know.
On to the pics!...............
