MR Fett helmet

Overall, it's pretty good. The shape looks good, some of the shape details are good (eg. rear circuit board, earcap shape, rangefinder), but the colors and paint technique seem a little too basic even for a prototype. For the price it will likely go for, the dent shape and depth should be fixed, the mandible red should be darker and more accurate, and the damage should look less topically painted on. The topical paint should show fewer rounded edges, and have a more "scraped off" look. Overall the reangefinder is nice. I think the determining factor will be the final product adjustments, and price. MR has the resources to do a great job, and hopefully they will do a great job as expected. Good luck MR.

I don't know if this question has been addressed already or not. If so, I apologize in advance.

Has this helmet been created from a digital scan off a real helmet?
If so, I believe that the purists will not be satisfied with the end result. Though it may be fairly accurate in it's overall shape, the limitations of the digital scanning would be enough for me to not consider it completely accurate. Same goes with any digitally scanned item.
Nothing would replace a straight up silicone casting off the real deal.

BTW, what is the big deal about being able to do this anyway? If you have the license to make replica helmets, is LFL that stingy about allowing a direct casting to be taken? There are a handful of fett helmets still in the archives, some of which were never used on screen. The risk of damaging ONE of them would be minimal if you handled the casting correctly.
Same goes with the numerous vader and trooper helmets.
I'd love to hear an answer to this by someone directly involved.

I 2nd that......Digital scan are great and all but not as close to an actually mold touching the helmet.

Yes, it is scanned. You are absoltuely right about the purists. It definitely is not as close as a casting would be. In regardto LFL's "stinginess" the answer appears to be yes, they are stingy.

After looking at that most recent link with the pics in it I am sure of it now, all the damage is topical and done with a silver sharpie pen. I have seen the exact same results on a helmet I painted once as a test. I know this is just a mock up and not the final paint master and blah blah blah but it still does look pretty bad paint wise. Yes the colors look decent without the flash and I am sure that the final product will look a little better, but this "teaser" is more than a little dissapointing.

From the MR Website Blog:

4) How many editions of the Boba Fett helmet are you planning?

We are working on 2 versions of the Fett Helmet. Once again, working on them does not guarantee production!!

CE: Vacuum formed bucket. The ear pieces will be either injection molded plastic (except the antenna) or die cast.
LE: Fiberglass. The ear pieces will be either die cast or machined aluminum. We are working on making the 2 LED's on top of the helmet blink.

5) Do you know when the Fett Helmets will be released?

Not at this time, but we'll keep you posted as soon as we know!

I will state again, I like it and think the actual version will look much better.

excuse my warped thinking here ... but am i reading that making a helmet by looking at pictures is more accurate than digitally scanning a real helmet?

for anyone who saw this helmet how is the flare on it, there is a lack of straight on pictures of the ones i seen so far

I think it would be a heck of a claim for someone to say this. There is no doubt that some details do get lost in the scanning process and that a scanned helmet will never be as accurate as a helmet that was cast off an original but I think it would be virtually impossible for even the best sculptor to make a more accurate helmet than a scan in regard to overall size and shape.

As I and others have mentioned, the perception of the ESB helmet having exaggerated flare is somewhat of a myth cultivated by film/lens distortion and low-angle photography.

I agree. I used to have pics of my mystery helmet, taken in positions that mimicked that ESB scene. The flare was consistent.

I have to be honest, I am a Darth Vader fan. But I think this helmet will work. Obviously, this is not the finished prop...we hope. I am by no means a Fett expert, but the MR helmet does look pretty good! I do have a question though...did the actual helmet have such a dull looking paint job?

Barring any unforseen problems with MR, this helmet will ROCK!!
