    Sep 18, 2014, 1:00 PM - More prepping help!! #1

thanks to all that replied to my last thread reguarding prepping,

furthermore i have a few questions

    - do all of you sand down around the visor until the outside is flush with the inner cast?

is this a good stopping point for the side or does it need to go out more?

and while finishing up cutting the excess with a dremel i noticed a gash i cut vertically , will this be ok or do i need to apply filler and sand flush?

sorry for all the questions guys but this is my first time working with a kit, ive made a couple of scratchbuilds but thats a complete different world.

of course all comments , critics welcome, i want this one to turn out nice so all helpful knowlege is appreciated!!!

I used some small files and some sand paper to knock that down until it is flush.

    JUST CURIOUS...
Hey mandalorian01...what did you use to make your helmet??? Is it Sintra??? ...reason I ask...cuz when I made a helmet 4 yrs ago, I just realized while struggling w/ my current scratch build, that I used 4 & 5 mm Sintra...this time I'm using 2 mm...and using a heat gun or boiling water, it warps something crazy!!! (Yours looks great by the way)

I didn't have this problem before...gonna try and lay my hands on a heat plate...maybe that'll work!!!

dolioshmolio - thanks for the pics thats very helpful, so the vertical sections were sanded flush as well, i guess i should filler that gash and sand some more huh?

eventHORIZON - this helmet is an animae fan cold cast helmet, the others scratch builds i was referring to were made out of newspaper board with the help of ant mans tutorial

You should actually be removing the thickness of the visor area up to the point of the
"vertical gash" in your second picture. If you look all around the edges of the visor cutout,
you can make out a sort of dividing line. The edges of the visor area should be thinned
out to that line so that they look like dolioshmolio's pictures.

Here's a pic of one of my prior commission helmets.
It gives a pretty good idea of how much material you should remove
from the inner rim of the visor area. If you don't remove this thickness,
the visor will sit funny when it's installed.

Like I mentioned, dolioshmolio's pics show how thin these areas are, too.

I may be misunderstanding, but the "thickness" should be good to go. Look at an untrimmed helmet and imagine the visor area of fiberglass completely gone. The lines of the T are your stopping points. Just don't use very harsh grit or harsh grinding tools as you get close to the edge. Fine sandpaper like 220 and finer or more preferably a fine file set like you can pick up at hardware stores. They come with around 10 different shaped small files that are typically held in a roll pouch or a plastic case.
