Mcquarrie Fett helmet FINISHED PICS 10-9-08

Hey all I know no one probably has one yet but I am sculpting the one of the many versions of the Mcquarrie Fett helmets in 1:1 and was wondering if anyone has better pics of the new 30th anniversary Mcquarrie Fett figure due out at the beginning of this month.
I have the pic floating around the net of the figure but was hoping someone had more.Probably wont be able to get any til the figure is actually released.
I have already started the sculpt but cant go much further till the figure comes out and I can see the back of the helmet.Ill post WIP pics here for anyone interested. Thanks-

Well here is the first pull of the SGB MQ Fett helmet. This one hasnt been weathered yet or had the lense installed but wanted to take some pics of it.I want to weather it slightly to make all the carved in details/lines pop out a little more. Its hard to see the small detail because the whole helmet is white.

These pics come from "From Star Wars to Indiana Jones."
Dunno if these are the same concept helmet you're looking for.

I don't have a scanner, so I took pics of the page.

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out, I've been thinking about doing a "one" of the many concept helmets for a while. Good luck with the project!

    Ah! OK, gotcha.
That would be a cool helmet to see in 1:1 size.

BTW, what is that in his belly plate??? Looks like a little vending machine in there.

I think somebody said before theres a thermal detonator there. Or it's his stash or something...I don't know.

Maybe it's access to his twin internal nuclear power cores so that...waitaminnit...That's T3. Never mind. It's very late and I'm very tired. Good Night!

BTW definitely post prgress pics when you get started. Would be very cool to see!

Cool. Are you doing like the McQuarrie/30th Anniversary doll, or the white Fett as seen in pics with Lucas circa 1979? <edit> Reading good. You are doing the super pre-duper Pre-Pro! Wowwa-Wowwie!

    I have tried this...

SGB... I am watching this thread with anticipation.

Started one this the other day.I cut out a template from abs for the lense and nose area.
I am using a cast of a DP deluxe as an armature to build this helmet on.Im going to use primarily bondo to sculpt with.
In the next few days Ill post some WIP pics.
Cant wait to get this going.

Yeah Marrow sun did the above version in the painting Im doing the action figure version pictured the helmet that kinda looks like a skull with the 3 aerators at the bottom.
The action figure comes with 2 helmets I think Marrows was the one thats looks more like the traditional fett helmet Im doing the one not on the figure when you buy it.

Re: Mcquarrie Fett helmet WIP (action figure based)

Here are some very early pics.I used a cast of a Dp deluxe as an armature and slopped some bondo in the basic shape needed.I cut out a visor/nose template from abs and found all my centers. Now I am roughing in the clay.
The face will be shorter than the regular fett but I will have to build the dome up a bit which will compensate for the face being shorter.
The pics are at an upward angle so the visor looks like it has a bend in it in the middle it doesnt it goes straight across like the figures does.
It starting to look like something.
I will soon cut out the lower mandible section and use flat stock sintra.Ill mock up the 3 aerators but will most likely have to cast them seperately.Ill post more pics soon.

Well I have been on a concept helmet tear lately im finishing up the Mcquarrie stormtrooper and now starting this one and have another concept helmet in mind when this is done.
Because this is going to be a clay sculpt I will have to make 2 molds one of the original sculpt and then Ill have to pull a hard copy and clean it up smooth to make my master. So yeah I probably will offer a few to cover my costs on the project.

Cool! I'll be paying attention to this project as it goes along.

It's hard to tell in the pics, but it looks like the mandibles on the original helmet are kind of "smooshed" together at the bottom. Would that make it too small to wear? Or do you plan to only make it as a display piece?

Yeah i cut a slit in each corner of the eye slot and squeezed the mandibles together and bondoed them.
It should be wearable because the clay sculpt will go back out to the area where the mandibles would generally be.The reason i did this was because if I sculpted over them in the original postiton the helmet would have been to huge and out of proportion.

I am willing to bet you have been asked more than once, but what kind of clay are you using? Oil/wax based or water? Do you have any problems getting it to stick to your 'armature'? I have been having trouble getting my chavant NSP soft to stick to mine since it wants to stick to my fingers more than flat plastic surfaces. So I have been using the water based clay, I just foresee this as problematic when I go to mold, since I planned on using water based clay to dam for the plaster and silicone. I guess it just means more work in finalizing...

    Outstanding work BTW.

I use Roma plastilena med./firm.I dont generally have problems with it not wanting to stick. On smooth abs or sintra it does tend to slide around a bit.what I do in that situation is drill pilot holes into the armature to give the clay a place to root into this works great.
I tried the wax based prima plastilena and hated it it was like sculpting with warm peanut butter it stuck to my hands better than it did the sculpture but it is great for making dams when molding.

I assume you just seal it up good before molding, I used romalina once before finding out about the sulfur retarding the curing process in silicone. I kind of moved away from it after that disaster, maybe I will give it a go again, I still have about 20 lbs of romalina in the basement. Thanks for your time man.

Yeah you def. wanna seal it good with several coats of krylon crystal clear. thats what i use and it work well just got to make sure you seal it well it kindd of puts a vapor barrier between the clay and the mold material.

I definitely still want to do it. I love building stuff from scratch, when I have the time to make it look right. Maybe I'll make one of the other concept variations. I've seen a couple different ones. I've bben trying to think of a way to do the fold out abdominal gun and have it look right when retracted too. BTW I recently got one of your jumpsuits from someone here. Very nice work!

I think the helmet in the lower right corner of the pics above looks like it could have been a Vader concept. Here's another pic I found.

Re: Mcquarrie Fett helmet WIP (action figure based)

Well I got the temp mold of the MQ stormy done the other day and pulled a hard cast to sand down and make my master before I make the master mold.
Some more pics. I mocked up the aerators and took pics of it next to the JRX McQuarrie Vader Im building/finishing for someone. Thought it would be cool to show them side by side even though neither is done yet.
So Now that this one is almost done I can get cracking on the MQ Fett i started. I have done more to it since the last pics and will post more updates soon.

You're working on that concept Vader for me right? A surprise birthday present? Seriously, you shouldn't have...

That MQ Stormy is wonderful!!! Keep up the great work. Any idea if/when you will be offering these?

Someone on the RPF had a MQ C3PO recently. Man, it sure would be nice to get all these together for some pics...

Thanks folks.....just to clear up any confusion I did NOT make the Mcquarrie Vader helmet a RPF member JRX did I am just doing all the finish work, assembly and paint apps. It came as a unfinished kit.
As for the stormy helmet I am currently sanding sanding sanding to get it as clean as possible to make the master mold.
The Fett helmet is all bulked out and now Im in the process of getting some symetry to it. I am also trying to figure out how to make the aerators and the RF stalk and top. Ill post some pics of it by the weekend.Next up is a 1:1 Mcquarrie concept chewie.

Chewie?! Sweet, saw someone who did one of those on RPF - I guess it was a Puggles Trodd figure, which was based on the McQuarrie Chewie.

I thought you had picked up one of the concept Vaders as well.

Can't wait to see the progress on the concept Fett helmet!!!

Well I know it probably doesnt look much different to you guys but I reworked the face alot and still have a few things to do until Im happy with it.Once that is done the rest will go fast. Still need to decide how to build the aerators as well as the Rf and Rf stalk.
Looks funny until those big aerators get put in place.
Also in the pic is a very early stage rough of the Mcquarrie Chewbacca Bust.No where near done yet.Still have a ton of symetry issues...but hey its early I only have about 3 hours into it so far.
I am hoping to have the first mold done of the Fett helmet then I will do the same thing I am doing with the MQ stormtrooper helmet I am making and sand sand sand it then make a master mold.

Hey folks finally got the MQ storm 2nd mold done! and it came out nice with very few imperfections. So Now I can get crackin on the Fett bucket again.I did work on it some and its basically done just now have to tweak the details.
As for the clay I use I use Roma Plastilena its an oil based clay and comes in 2lb. blocks. It does have sulphur in it so you need to clear coat your sculpt before molding because the sulphur can inhibit the mold from curing properly.I use the med garde the medium firm is great too.

Here is a few pics of an almost done stormy. The pics of me wearing it shows the size of it.I tried to make it the size of the more accurate sized TK helmets and I did pretty good.I am about 6' 3" 220lbs. and yes off duty Stormies wear wife beater tank tops lol.
Thats my mother in law in the back ground
