    Jan 25, 2004, 4:41 PM - Lynn's MSH2 progress pics (update 2/8) #1

Here are my MSH2 progress pics.
The paints are the RS movie paints unmodified and straight out of the bottle, of the back of the helmet however is my own recipe as I used for ROTJ cheeks which I feel is the same color.

***EDIT PICS 2/8***Here it is as of now,

Here is the visor mounting system I choose, I used knurled knobs, post screws, and modifed picturing hanging mounts to hold it in place. The visor can be removed and installed in seconds.

    Enjoy,
    Lynn

    Lynn,

That's awesome work! The colors look great!

I was wondering when someone would invent a new visor placement method, and I think you nailed it. When you wear the helm, do yuo have enough room inside? (for servo, harness, headset, etc.)

You think you could whip up an exact parts list and tutorial on that visor placement?

Thanks! I like this method of mounting, it is quick and easy to install the visor. A big plus is I can take the visor in or out anytime and I don't have to mask it off to paint.

brilliant, thanks for the mounting system idea!

One of the main things that's kept me from finishing my helmet is the knowledge that I'm going to screw up the visor mount, I think this will help!

    Here you go...

    Parts list....

Parts gotten at Lowes and Walmart....

Lowes (Parts found in he specialty fastner bins section)....
    4) Brass knurled knobs (size to fit post screws)
    4) 1" aluminum post screws (Only the the screw part was used) ( Aluminum post screws were used over regular screws because they have a nice large flat head to them for a more flush mount.)
    2 Part epoxy
    2 part stick plumbers putty

    Walmart...
6 Large "J" (Approx. 1" long or bigger) shaped metal picture hanging hooks.

    Visor installation process....
Cut visor to fit inside of bucket and tape in place.

    "J" picture hook prep...
Take all 6 metal "J" hangers and straigten out almost flat. On 4 "J" pic hangers Drill the hole bigger in the first hole towards the large end of the hook to allow post screws to fit through it. On all 6 "J" pic hangers cut off the second hole to shorten them.

    Post Screw installation...

Take the aluminum post screws and using only the screw part, slip the pic hanger over it and place it inside of bucket at where you want to hold the visor down. I let the hanger go in about 3/4" to hold the visor down. Mark the location with a pencil or marker, do this with all 4 post screws.

Next use 5 min epoxy to hold all 4 post screws in place. When dry cover the pst heads with plumbers stick putty to make it more durable to hold the screws in place. Let these sit for 24 hrs to let all epoxies cure to full strenght, TRUST ME ON THIS ONE!! I learned the hard way.

Take the prepped "J" pic hangers and place over the screws and bend in place to hit the visor and allow them to hold it in place, these will be under pressure, thus the reason to allow the epoxies to cure for the 24hrs. Take the brass knurled knobs and screw them on.

The "J" pic hangers at the bottom are just held in by 5 min. epoxy and then puttied over. I will place fake looking "knobs" on those to look like they are holding something in place.

    That is pretty much it.

    HTH,
    Lynn

Nice Lynn! I like the way you've installed the visor. Did you get the "tabs" from a picture frame or buy them sperate somewhere? Again, coming along very nice!

    Thanks!

They are metal "J" shaped picture hanging hooks I got from Walmart as I wrote above in the tutotial.
I think they came in packs of three.
I'll post more pics when I get more done.

The pics w/ the mounting system are little red x's, but a couple of the pics of the bucket work. It looks AWESOME Lynn!!! Colors appear to be spot-on. Look forward to seeing more progress pics.

Edit: Nevermind, I see all the pics now. Very cool idea w/ the visor mount!!

Great work, Lynn! I will study your visor mount-technique closely. I hate to just glue it in.

    Looks Great Lynn,

    Good idea on the Visor!

I thought that RS only had a colour scheme for the ESB bucket and was working on the ROTJ colours? Did I miss a post?

I'm pretty sure Lynn is doing an ESB. He was only referring to his mixture of the back color being similar to the ROTJ cheek color.

Looking good, Lynn! I'll have to echo the comments about your visor system- very ingenous!!

Duh - silly me. Now that I look at it, the decals are the most obvious give away, and the MSH2 bucket and.... :o

    Yep, it is ESB...
    Thanks for the comments guys!

I thought this visor mount system was old hat since I've heard of other people bolting their visors in place.
I'll get more pics up soon as I have something more to post.

I'm sorry if this has been covered already.
What brand of paints and name of colors were used Lynn? And did ya get'em at Home depot? I have the Mystery helmet and was thinking of making it a Empire instead of the Return version.
    Thanks!

Here is a link to the colors and you will have to go to a hobby store or order online.

    Thanks bud!!!
My eyes were going crossed eyed last night doing this thing.... It is bitch trying to get things to line up so it looks correct with each other.

That is why I draw my weathering out on it with a pencil before I paint it so I know it is where I want it.
I'll start back on it tomorrow night after I give it a rest.
