Mar 21, 2010, 6:11 AM - Light grey areas on ESB helmet, where are they placed? Using the stencils #1

I'm using the helmet paint stencils, and I have a question about the light grey areas. I have painted the base coat with humbrol 147, light grey. According to Terminal Fettlers list I should mask off the light grey damage, but I'm not sure which areas that includes?

The lower cheeks have a colour described as "looks like dull metal". Is that the light grey areas?

I was pretty sure there should be some light grey damage on the green back panels, but that is listed as bright silver. Isn't there any light grey damage there?

The back red areas and the mandibles have a colour described as "base metal", is that the light grey?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Lisa, the light grey only appears in a few isolated areas. In and around the dent, along the edge of the R/H upper cheek/mandible edge, a couple of tiny areas on the bottom of the mandibles on the front, within the main damage on the R/H back panel, immediately either side of the key slots and between the upper/lower R/H ear sections. There are a couple of other spots here and there mostly on the trim and bottom edge of the helmet. I found this base grey colour appears within the silver only ( with the exception of an area around the dent, the upper cheek/mandible area and the key slot area ) which means once masked, you have to leave this on until the very last layer. This causes a few problems as it is easy to accidently remove the mask when buffing with wire wool. There is the option to add the grey on top of the silver in certain areas as a separate layer, this can work well on the R/H back panel where the damage is most chaotic! Hope this helps...

Thanks a lot! My helmet is now silver.

Silver damage next, that'll take some time!

I bet the origin of this base color is where smallest silver chips have come off after using masking tape on the original helmet. I noticed this on some minor ereas on my FP Premium that the silver color is coming off again. Donīt know if chris used some other kind of resin or if itīs just coincidence ... I never noticed this to happen on the FPH. BTW: My helmet has been primered as always! And: It only happens whithin the silver. And thatīs truly a fact on the original helmet too.

The base light grey color seems to be the resin of the helmet on the original.

maybe thatīs where those things come from. Either from "aggressive" masking tape or by usual handling ...

    just my 2cents ... ;-)

I still see the light grey as an individual layer and either first or second layer used, rather than real damage. Although random in location, it's too uniform in appearance to be damage. The area between the R/H ear pieces being a prime example of this...

oh ... I didnīt notice this areas between the R/H ears pieces ... ok ... I guess TF is right with his theory of the individual layer.
