Had a fun day adding some AOSW damage!( what bank holiday weekends were designed for!) A good reason to keep all your old paint brushes, they're perfect for the scuff marks/damage as they're not as uniform as a good brush so give some random effects. By some fluke of lighting the AOSW ref pic in the background seems to match up quite well!
At the end of this paint up i'll be posting a stage by stage list of paint/ techniques. Trust me when i say this but this paint job is not that difficult to achieveThere is also an additional layer i forgot about, the white gel coat which i've exposed in some scratches using my SP pencil and around the bottom edge also...
Outstanding! Really nice work!
I dont know what to say apart from wow 8)8)![]()
TF,
Uh-oh! I see 1 small scratch that's off by .03 mm. Total rubbish. . . might as well smash it with a sledgehammer.
Keeps looking better and better! Looking forward to seeing some overall pics once it's done.![]()
Hi TF,
This is absolutely A M A Z I N G !
The layered painting is really awesome!
You have set the new standard for (layered) painting dude!
In total awe I remain,
Peter

Thanks Peter, i'll say again that once you've got the technique nailed ( i think there is still room for improvement ) and familiarize yourself with the details, its not that difficult to achieve. One of the hardest elements is taking your time (this helmet is 10 weeks and counting ) and re-checking your liquid masked areas before committing to paint, one reason i like the layered method; you can tweak the detail before the airbrush comes out...![]()
I've just put some paint on the R/H ear parts, mostly used liquid mask but also picked/scratched down to silver and grey layers, even exposing the white gel coat in a few areas for some highlights, once the graphics go on i'll scratch through these for the finishing details...
thats shakalakling!.. awsome job on the helmet!...
Sorry if i'm boring anyone here but i'm nearly done with this helmet, i promise! Just re-masked the R/H top mandible area and added a purple and then red layer to pick up on the detail missed in the initial layer. Added a few more scratches through the layers to silver and dry brushed some dirt onto the top of the brow/around the ears and the smudges on the L/H mandible. The ear symbols were done with masking tape ( still need the full stops) and brush painted. I still need to add some detail within the dent and then its the final 3 colour mist and splatter! Then i'm done, still undecided on the crack repair and pen marks?
TF... Have you stolen the AoSW Boba Helmet?
AWESOME Work!![]()
bored? heh... i'm just looking at this to see what else i should be doing on mine!
i'd say no to the crack/repair myself. everything else looks cool... that is just obvious mishandling of a prop.
I still think you need more practice bruv... I'm just not seeing it?
Sweet @ss! (no, not you - the lid)
I'd not go for the crack repair personally but It's your lid... and you have gone for the exhibit version after all?![]()
MAN!! This is a great paintjob
Don't go for the crack repair and penmarks.
It looks out of context.
Just my 2c.:thumbup
TF, What mask fluid have you used?
THX![]()
WOW... i still cant believe it.. can you say REPLICA!... you'd better be keeping this one.
I used Humbrol Maskol, i found this better to use than W and N. Its a little tricky on the silver where its difficult to see sometimes but perfect for the other colours where you can check the details underneath once it drys. I've also started using a silicone chisel brush 0 gauge and soft compound. Dosen't clog like a brush and you can get some really fine detail...![]()
And have you ever used Micromask? I have it, and I'm going to try with, but better if someone say how it is
Cheers
Awesome lid Garrett
I'd say yes to the repair crack but no to the blue pen marks. You gotta have the repair crack
Well, It's the same, a latex mask for paint, but maybe is better one or other.
Thank you very much TF!And for the Silver paint base, what have you used?
Awesome helmet TF!

Humbrol Silver no.11 I found the metal cote promotes peeling if you're layering the paints although it looks great for topical painting. No.11 is a tad shinny but during the wire wool rubbing stages this fades to a dull sheen. The other thing is it's just right when it comes to picking off the additional layers for the scratch details...
Thanks! Very interesting. I'll have to try to find one of those and experiment with it.
I begin to cry for happiness when I see your paint job here! Your sure this is not the real lid... For me it's a clone work !!!
My eyes my eyes
awww what a DETAIL!
you are a true artist
Ruben
Hey, I just popped in here and for some reason never posted on this thread. But I wanted say what a nice job you did on this helmet.
Lee
Looks great bro. You use the exact same mechanical pencil that I do. I know exactly what TK7602 is saying about the brush clogging. I had this as well when I was using this stuff called Maskoid. It worked well, but ate brushes like crazy. I just bought W&N pretty cheap at my local art store, kind of a new find for me. It works even better than the old stuff, and rinses very clean from my brushes after use. I can use them over and over again.
Its very simple really, the silicone brush is for applying the Humbrol maskol. Take the dome for example:
Spray the helmet silver, mask the silver damaged, spray the helmet grey. Remove the silver mask. Mask the silver and grey damage, spray the helmet green. Remove the silver and grey mask. The propelling pencil is for the fine detail scratches, pushing through the dry paint leaves a fine chipped scratch, dragging on its edge sideways a crack like mark, doing this on recently painted surfaces has different effects; endless possibilities with a basic tool. Depending on how hard you press will determine which layer you expose!
The stub of the brush tool i used has virtually no hair but makes some great marks; just experiment with what you have to hand, i hope this helps?

That's a brilliant tip using the silicone brush for the masking fluid. I've thrown out several bristle brushes because of the mask already. I'll have to pick one of these bad boys up! I never even heard of them until now.
in the middle of painting my lid up, help from other members suggested i take a look at your lid for colours, i can't believe the amount of detail and time you have put into this, but it was more than worth it. can't see anyone doing anything better than this, just perfect, congratulations
WOW! I just stumbled onto this thread. Great looking bucket!

A MA Z I N G ! ! ! !
I think the term DOGS BOLLOCKS is relevant here. Truly wonderful paint job a work of art indeed.
O.K. here's the finished paint job. The borden is cold cast brass, looks more metallic in non-flash lighting, the gel coat on this helmet was white and you can see this in certain scratches through the paint layers...
Spectacular reproduction and an amazing show of layered technique, that list is incredible.
Still room for improvement... naw, just kidding mate. Helmet looks stellar!!! I can notice some small improvements over mine and everyone thinks that I stole the helmet from Lucas so that says a lot about your work. Best feature of my costume and I firmly believe whatever I do, I will never top that helmet off. Keep up the amazing work Garrett!
Oh, and your list looks awesome! I guess I'll just have to try and paint myself a bucket..I already have one of your helmet as reference LOL
Garrett. . . wow!
Just beautiful work. I love incorporating those 'grease stains' on the back of the helmet.
wow , very nice work , one the nicest paint jobs i have ever seen if not the nicest. outstanding!
i am repainting my helmet as we speak and i hope it comes out half as good as yours.
i am using the MR photo shoot of the ESB bucket for reference from the THD boba reference CD , what pics did you use?
The AOSW pics courtesy of Brak's Buddy are the best for detailed reference IMO...
Simon Fett, unfortunately there's always room for improvement, i'll be starting another ESB next year and learning from my mistakes...
Cheers Eric!

Absolutely fantastic! Wanna trade buckets?![]()
The helemt looks nice.....is there a step by step of how to paint with the stensils?
there should be laws against being this good
one of the finest paint jobs i´ve ever seen!!!!!!!!
What were you using to add the Humbrol Maskol? The details are so fine on some of the damage.
Ah right, Thanks for the info. I am trying to get my head round all of this layering as I am going to be painting a ROTJ helmet in the next couple of months. This is the hardest way as far as I can see but it turns out the best. Thing is tho am a noob at painting!
That is absolutely beautiful. Great job!!!
That paint work is AWESOME!
I noticed on your list liquid mask I was wondering where you would pick that up and what kind you used.
Crazy-awesome detail...
Outstanding job!
I still look at my helmet and drool TF heh... I can't thank you enough!
El1te
Awesome work!!!!!! In my opinion it's even better than the MR Helmet on my shelf :P
I too have been tooling away.... there are a TON of layers. Have you tried scratching away paint for effect?
