Jluck's ROTJ bucket thread... WIP!

ok this is going to be my "official" bucket thread so i will update it as i go along with the paint here over the next few days/week here. i did my armor in rotj so im going to do this bucket the same. eventually im gonna orde me up a nice BM or FP lid and do a esb style on that so i will have the option to go pure rotj or SE. at the end to i will list the paints and methods i used incase i have a good match here. some of the colors i used are tinted a bit ( i got the exact mixes too);) i spent yesterday marking off the damage areas and today masking and painting the top of the lid. and i started some of the other damge ,wear and scratches, which i will finish once the greys are applied. the greys im going to apply toplicly to make it more accurate to the pics from mom. i even managed to get that 2-toned bluish/greenish hue that the mom pics seem to have. i did this by first applying the main coat, then taking the remainder of the paint and adding 6 drops of flat white to lighten it, and adding a few more drops of thinner. then once the main coat was not "wet" but tacky i lightly misted a coat of that on there. ill give out the methods and what i did as i go along here. like i said its a W>I>P so bare with me, and LMK what u think of the start so far. good or bad! :) ;) thanks everyone!

ok, not too much today, just the lower cheeks. man let me tell u i forgot what it was like to do the tiny little detail work like this. since the damage areas are so small it would have been to hard to mask them off without fear of exrta paint pulling up and making big blotches, so i made "bulk" silver areas in certain shapes and then went in and hand painted all the little pieces of the puzzle together ;) i did this with both of the lower cheeks...phew my eyes :wacko lol.... later ill re-evaluate the areas becasue im sure i still have some spots to fix up still. thats it for today neway. i problably wont have another update till mid next week hence im going out of town for the holiday weekend.. have a good holiday everyone!!! ok, now i did the upper cheeks. its 3 layers of color. in the mom pics it has that blue/black/green hue and laying dwn the blue by itself was too blue so i put dwn a green, then blue, then a heavy black wash over it. the camera really picked up the brush swirls from the black, but its more subtle in person, and it lets the blue and the green show more too. idk yet if im done with it, i may still actually re-do a blue coat and then another more evened out black over that...but for now.....stay tuned :)the first set of pics is the blue, then w/ the black wash.

9-7-07 update:

ok, so i re-did my upper and lower cheeks again ( thats twice now) but still have some touch-ups to do on them casue the weather and humidity was not nice here this week, and i still have to paint in the green on the lower cheeks to fill in that "puzzle" part again on the left one. + i experimented with each upper cheek on technique, there both airbrushed w/ the hunbrol #88 as base coat, but the left cheek is airushed w/ the C&O ench blu and the right cheek is sponged with the C&O blu , and i have some fixes on those as well (as u can see):facepalm.........so im gonna focus on the back side of the helmet here more on this update. i used floquil MKT green as the base color, and then sponged humbrol #88 deck green over it ( not too heavy of a coat). once the paint set and cured i took super fine steelwool and gently scoured the surface to pull up some of the deck green and let the lime green color show through more as it looked to me in the mom pics...well that it. next will be the mandibles and then all the fun topical and wethering.... :)

thanks guys! its been more of an experiment for me to say the least. 1 being ive never done a fett b4, and 2 being theres isnt any definitive ROTJ color list yet. so atleast ill have the technique dwn when i do my "real" bucket, hopefully a FPH!! after all a DP makes for good practice casue no matter what it looks better than it did =P

Shawn,

Nice work...and I feel your pain on redoing the paintwork. :) Awesome job so far...Love it! Thanks for sharing!

Stay safe,

Tim.

9-10-07 update

ok, the mandibles are painted, the greys in the mandibles i think im gonna do a couple shades darker, they seem too light still to me. and i still have some spots to fill in w/ the red as well. again, i did "bulk" areas of silver on th mandibles and i need paint them in still.......as far as the rest of the bucket, i applied a grey wash over the buckets top , lower cheeks , and back, then a black wash over all but the mandibles. scratches etc are on. the left cheek where the upper meets the lower the dark blue pulled up so i touched it up real qucik for the pics so it look funky so please exuse that :facepalm an then i took super-fine steelwool and scoured edges/surfacs to get a more natural wear appearence. i still have the ears and kill strips to do... i wont do another up-date untill its all done and sealed so it may be awile.. i took these outside to get natural light, even though today is overcast so some deatails got washed out...... well over all im happy, not as good as i want it but again it was practice and i did all kinds of methods on it so it doest have that polished look to it. but now that ive had a hand in doing a fett bucket i will be ready for the next one and it shoudl go alot smoother than this funky Don Post.. thanks everyone i had fun!!!! :cheers (y) :)
